Based on a photograph of a flyer on a building on Valencia Street in San Francisco
Stanton were one of the biggest manufacturers of concrete street lamp columns - with production going back to pre-WW2 days. Amongst the last styles manufactured were these versions of the 'type 8' columns - here showing a standard height of 22' 6" and with double brackets ranging from 5 feet to 16 feet spans. The latter must have been quite something!
Watching and taking photos of Pelicans is a favorite pass time of mine. I took this series of shots as a Pelican circled overhead waiting to get a perch on a light tower where other Pelicans would not bunch up to make a place for this particular bird.

When walking around the south bank in London with my sister and her kids. I spotted this brightly coloured set of stairs hidden in the shade beneath a concrete building and I couldn’t resist.
With a 50mm lens attached to my D7000, I began thinking about the best way to compose this image. I wanted to make the text the main subject and have it act like a big inviting arrow which points up the dark stairs. So tried to make the “big arrow” using the contrast between the floor and the wall leading away from the viewer.
Once I got the composition I wanted I set about getting the camera to portray the image that I could see. It was a particularly bright day so I set my iso to 100, I wanted a short depth of field to make the “this way” text the main focus of the image so i set it to f/2.2 then I adjusted my shutterspeed to 1/60 to make the image slightly overexposed to pick out the brightness of the yellow and I fired off a few shots.
I hope you like my work. I am really keen on becoming a better photographer and any constructive criticism you may have is more than welcome.
Thanks
Ronnie
