This escalator is from around 1933 and is made out of wood. It's like going back in time. Stunning!! Took this photo with a Canon FD 24mm 2.8e manual lens.
Sculpture design by Tempt. Additional artist are: Defer, Eye, Angst, and Slick.
This piece was shown at the Street Cred Show at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, which was curated by Steve Grody.
Character: Eve
Cosplayer: Memphis Muerte.
Lighting: Twin speed lights in a 43-inch-shoot-through umbrella, between 6 and 7 o'clock. Down the stream about 15 feet at between 12 and 1 o'clock is a gridded speed light.
Shot very near the ambient light level, using the flash to add shape, fill and sparkly eyes.

Hmmm, looks interesting ... and we did climb it, finding signs of surveyors having climbed it a long time ago.
The Cathedrale de Notre Dame in Strasbourg is one of France's most impressive gothic buildings, and is particularly noted for it's soaring west facade, richly ornamented and crowned by a single steeple (two were originally planned but this hardly seems to matter, the design was much modified by a succession of architects). The facade and spire dominate the old heart of Strasbourg like a medieval cliff-face, more reminiscent of German gothic, particularly the cathedral of Cologne than most of it's northern French brethren. The German feel is reinforced by the warm red sandstone used throughout the building.
Approaching the cathedral is an unforgettable experience as it's huge ornate mass rises above and beyond the stree, the drama heightened by the fact there is so little space immediately in front of the church to take it all in. Much of the original sculpture of the main portals has survived, on the towering spiky portals of the main facade as well as those of the transepts. Some of the finer and more exposed figures have been removed to the nearby Musee de l'Oeuvre Notre Dame for protection and replaced by perfect copies on the building itself.
Inside the nave owes more to French Gothic in it's forms, but the Germanic influence is still felt in the older, Romanesque apse and transepts (unusually the eastern limb barely projects beyond the crossing) and in the later side chapels and the stained glass, most of which is medieval (including a sequence of German rulers in the north aisle, legacies of a fluctuating border).
There are fine medieval artworks in glass and stone all around the cathedral, a particularly fine example being the beautiful 13th century sculpted Angel Pillar in the south transept.
My visit here was not helped by rather dull, rainy weather, which darkened the warm tones of the stonework and rendered the interior somewhat gloomy (much would have been barely visible without electric lighting). It was nevertheless a magnificent sight to behold.
No chance for capturing beautiful mountain views yesterday, 9 September 2024. When I reached the highway, it was obvious that Kananaskis was blanketed in smoke from wildfires. So tempting to turn around and head back home. It's not good to be breathing in the smoky air, either. My decision was to carry on, but make this drive a bit shorter than I would have otherwise done. Seven hours, with a total distance of 315 km.
Our weather forecast was for rain for a few days, except for yesterday. So, rather than wait, I thought I would get a bit of fresh air before staying home on the rainy days. There were two main things that I was hoping to see - a Pika/Rock Rabbit, which I have seen many times before, but you can't see them too many times. The other thing was a Shaggy Mane mushroom. Two or three years, I have found them at a certain location. The dates have varied a little and I really didn't want to miss them, as they last only a short time. All I saw were three or four small ones just starting to emerge from the soil. Enough to feel happy, though I couldn't get a decent shot of them.
Taking the back road route out to the mountains, I eventually came to where the Pikas can be found - if you are lucky and patient. Just when I was beginning to think that I would be going home without seeing one and being able to get a few photos, a little one appeared not too far away. I had heard a few squeaks, so I knew it/they were around.
These little Pikas/Rock Rabbits are only 6-9 inches long and are usually seen far away, running backwards and forwards over the scree (talus) slope that they call home. Very occasionally, one happens to come closer, usually for just a quick moment. While I was watching, this one was busy picking a few leaves to eat on the spot, rather than collecting plants to take back to its cave.
"The American Pika is a generalist herbivore. It eats a large variety of green plants, including different kinds of grasses, sedges, thistles and fireweed. Although pikas can meet their water demands from the vegetation they eat, they do drink water if it is available in their environment. Pikas have two different ways of foraging: they directly consume food (feeding) or they cache food in haypiles to use for a food source in the winter (haying). The pika feeds throughout the year while haying is limited to the summer months. Since they do not hibernate, pikas have greater energy demands than other montane mammals. In addition, they also make 13 trips per hour to collect vegetation when haying, up to a little over 100 trips per day." From Wikipedia.

A couple of short YouTube videos in case anyone wants to hear and see these absolutely cute creatures:
The usual small herd of Bighorn Sheep was doing what it always does - stand on the highway, licking salt (and other minerals) off the road surface. No matter how many times they are moved off the road, they keep returning. Talk about stubborn!
So few birds to be seen in Kananaskis. A Swainson's Hawk was seen on a hay bale, once I had driven south and then crossed one highway in order to reach my main highway home, going north. A few familiar barns were a welcome sight.
Three Northern Fur Seals getting dangerously close to a patrolling Orca. St. Paul Island, Alaska. 09/12/14.
White berries are considered poor choice to eat, as a rule. Just on outskirts of town, a tall waterfall trickles down, and visitors can hike up to bottom of falls.
Oh yeah! the sunsets back!!!

This was my first shot with Yuko, and all I can say is WOW! She is a fantastic young lady, great personality, extremely photogenic, has no bones in her body so can get into any position you want, and her legs go on forever - yes, a definite WOW!
We did this house in South Anchorage in June 2011; while I had a blast I regret not having more time to shoot with Yuko - so Yuko, can we do a re-shoot?
