I love the fact that the blossoms are only in bloom for about two weeks at my house. It makes you appreciate the beauty even more.
I drive past this memorial by the side of the road on the way to and from work. I've seen people stopped there, so I stopped and checked it out. Turns out that on May 18th, 2004 William Sturman died. I found his obituary on line here. (scroll to the bottom of the page),
These types of memorials are more often found in unincorporated areas (in this case along a road through a forest preserve) as incorporated cities/municipalities/etc have rules regulating, and often forbidding such things. A sad state of affairs, as memorials are often an important part of moving on for survivors. I didn't know William, nor do I know any of the details of what happened here 2 years ago. Yet I have seen his memorial and know that there are individuals to whom he was very important.
An escalator can never break. It can only become stairs. You would never see an "Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order" sign, just "Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience." mitch hedberg

More school buildings are needed, but temporary school buildings such as these help provided all the children in Mwandama with education immediately.
For a few days our house was supplied water from our generous neighbour. 200' of garden hose connected their outside faucet to our outside faucet. It worked! While we waited for the new pump, the 300' of plastic pipe, rope and wire snaked around the garden.
So as not to accidentally plummet to our deaths in the middle of the night, we had to build a temporary handrail (up to code, no less!)
This big sweet lug was found greeting customers at CVS/pharmacy where I work on Christmas Eve. I called the shelter and asked them to hold him for the required 72hrs in case his family was looking for him. Well, no one called...so the shelter told me his time was up. So, now he's here and I just may have an American Pit Bull Terrier dog rescue to take him. They specialize in placement of these bully breed dogs and are much better suited to the task than I. In the mean time, he's getting along great with all of our dogs (YAY!), he's awesome with people of all ages, and is just generally a well-behaved guy.
We're taking name ideas for him!!!
The TV is 200 pounds, so I needed to add some structural support. The price we pay for TRUE high-def... CRTs are friggin heavy...

Plans call for the pavilions to open in June 2009, shortly after the May opening of the Art Institute’s Renzo Piano-designed Modern Wing. The pavilions will remain in place through the fall, probably until late October, after which plans call for them to be disassembled and recycled into public art by Chicago artist Dan Peterman .

This is where Tigger's bedding and house has ended up for now. Just beyond the trees on the left is the main gate, and on the far right you can see the gazebo where he hangs out most of the time. I kept his things in there because they stayed dry and clean longer, and because he really likes it, but the volunteers moved his stuff to the far side of the gardens, way too close to where a raccoon has taken up residence! It is easily 3-4 times his weight, and would do him harm were there to be a confrontation. Since the coon eats all Tigger's food, that could be likely, so I thought it best to move him over here for now! We have a permanent house for him in the works, and I will be painting it this week! Once it's in there, we will find the best place for it, and hopefully Tigger will have a permanent residence!
