here's a nifty technique I discovered a while ago - insert flame pieces into a LEGO racers wheel, and bingo! - sweet thrusters!
it works with the long sweeping flame piece that comes in the new SP III sets, too, though not as well. :/
sorry for the lame marble-wood background - it's what I use when I don't want to pull out the full light blue paper sheet I usually use. :P

This is a different processing technique I'm using. By using virtual copies in Lightroom and Smartobjects in Photoshop, I'm able to extend my single file DRI techniques with this S95 image and create a much more effecient post processing technique.
In the past I often did all my edits and then flattened the image and saved them. Occasionally I saved all the layers, but that usually ended up with files that were unnecssarily large. I could end up with 6-7 layers, with multiple masking channels and adjustment layers. This usually resulted in a file that was easily 5-10 times the file size of my original or my final tiffs. This different technique still does take a fair amount of hard drive space, but does reduce the overhead by at least half or more, however the net benefit is the reduction in adjustment layers but also in the fact that I can now save a file that I can edit the original RAW files later.
By making a virtual copy in Lightroom, i'm able to make individual adjustments to each copy, then I send them to Photoshop as smart objects. I drag all the smart objects into one file to edit. I apply any masking channels, but all adjustments are done on each of the files at the RAW level.
This 'smarter' approach to layers gives more control over each layer, and mantains RAW control for maximum image quality. By doing so I avoid the need to do any HDR bracketing and I only need to focus on the best balanced exposure.
Of course this also avoids any traditional artifacts that result from many HDR techniques such as halos, and gives way more control over all of your data in your image.
Lastly of course is that I end up with a file (in this case a TIFF file) that I can at any point edit again and make adjustments. I can even make a duplicate (not a virutal copy), and make RAW adjustments with it without affecting any original or the last versions I made. Because the RAW files are referenced, even in the duplicate, it still uses the original RAW files, and any adjustments are saved directly into the composite file that is completely non-destructive.
The techniques that I used to edit this image were whitening teeth, blemish removal, contrast boosting and soft vignette.
