A digital painting. View large for best realization of technique and details. Image is designed to be reproduced in wall-size dimensions. The FX do not translate all that well in any small format.

Check out my Digital Painting Set for the complete array.

For the Dictionary Of Image Group:

INGREDIENCE - noun. Special visual character and flavor status attained from adding small pinches of image seasoning. Images properly cooked this way are said to possess "ingredience".

Word of caution, recipes generally are open to interpretation. Often handed down in altered states. For instance, Southern Ingredience may be wildly barbecuey while Pacific Northwestern Ingredience often contains hints of totem pole. Ogalla Souix might throw in horse hair. You all know that those Wisconsinites throw cheese into everything. And the Eastern Seaboarders, well, watch out for scallops and/or Gefilte Fish.

Got the picture!?

Here's a sponsoring packet using a mug and gift card to Starbucks. We love adding tags, such as ("Let's Chat!"), to let a few words deliver the message.

We think turning a sponsoring packet into a "gift" seems fitting. Afterall, if you love what you do, wasn't it a "gift" that the opportunity was offered to you? So, pass it on and offer the gift of a great opportunity to others!

This is a study of different drawing techniques, as well as grading varients. This is also the origin of my "Rat". The model I used to draw the pointelism eye is of the famed singer Madonna.

Hugh Jones

Hugh Jones abstract photos demonstrate an array of atypical and innovative techniques. Many photography enthusiasts are familiar with the technique of pinhole photography, where a tiny hole pierced in a closed box acts as a lens, projecting a fuzzy image onto the back of the box. Jones takes it a step further. He uses multiple pinholes in different arrays to create an image with a repeating element, like Escher’s Delight. Urban Thunder was a multiple-pinhole photo captured with a digital camera. The vibrant, abstract colors and streaks of bright light seem to capture the flurry and din of city traffic.

Jones’ other color photos, Yellow Submarine and Dali and Magritte toast each other, are realized by spraying a pane of glass on both sides with water droplets. The convex and concave droplets add dimension, creating a dynamic, vibrant image out of a traditional still life. Perhaps the most unusual and tricky method Jones practices is the highly unpredictable Sabattier process. Jones interrupts development once or twice and shines a bright light on the print, causing a reversal of some tones. The process also captures the texture of the water on the surface of the print and produces hard “Mackie” lines at high contrast regions of the print such as the window panes in And time began to seriously pass. Jones never knows what kind of an image he’ll get, but that is all part of the joy of discovery and experimentation.

For Jones, technical innovation goes hand in hand with conceptual artistry. “Part of the challenge is the technique, but technique by itself is not enough,” said Jones. Experimentation often produces unexpected and accidental results, but that merely opens the door for Jones’ imagination to interpret what he sees. In Nomad, Jones uses pinhole to transform a stem with leaves into a desert traveler; suddenly the beam of a flashlight becomes a huge, burning sun. Jones always strives to bring to life every part of an image: “Bottles dance, colors whisper, peppers submerge and clouds play.”

Walking on Water takes another familiar object—a crosswalk—and completely transforms it. Jones used slits and inverted the black and white values of the photo to produce the final image. Jones looks at Walking on Water and feels the powerful, visceral pull of rolling waves, even though the subject matter had nothing to do with water. Rather than worry about how people will react, Jones has learned to trust his instinct about what a photo is saying to him, following his teacher’s advice: “You have to tell yourself what the images are.” Jones feels that these images act as a window into the psychology of the artist, a veritable portrait of his unconscious. They visually communicate themes about reality and dreams, the conscious and unconscious, life and death, that Jones feels cannot be adequately expressed in words.

As a child, Jones loved looking through his microscope and his telescope to discover some new uncharted frontier. Now, as an adult, he continues to explore the beauty and meaning hidden in images of everyday things, this time through the lens of a camera.

Hugh Jones currently resides in Crystal City, Virginia.
