Picture shows technician Anke Spaeth at the Museum of Museums in Manchester ahead of the opening of the Tutankhamun His Tomb and His Treasures exhibition which opens on 22nd October until 27 February 2011 where more than 1,000 burial artefacts have been reproduced to scale by expert Egyptian craftsmen and can be viewed in the recreated burial chambers and in an extensive and detailed display. The reproduced artefacts include jewellery, amulets, coffers, chairs, weapons, a stunning golden chariot, large golden shrines and the iconic death mask; a rare and beautiful sight not seen in the UK since the original mask was displayed at the British Museum in the seventies. Turkana, in northern Kenya, has been hit by a massive drought for over a year, triggered and worsened by the effects of El Nino. Under a program called Kenya Resilient Arid Lands Partnership for Integrated Development (Kenya-RAPID), funded by USAID and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), CRS is the lead NGO in Isiolo and Turkana Counties working working with Catholic Church dioceses to support the County governments as they develop their capacities to sustainably tap and exploit precious water reserves in Kenya's Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, or ASALs. Substantial water supplies lie below ground, so using them responsibly and maintaining them at the County level (as part of Kenya's devolution under the new Constitution of 2010) is key to the economic development of these traditionally marginalized lands. In the ASALs, crop farming is possible only along riverbeds and/or with irrigation, so livestock is a mainstay of the economy. Ensuring access to water for livestock and people is a major pillar of the program.
Here, a technician from ICT4D partner in K-RAPID, a Portland, Oregon-based company called SweetSense, installs a solar powered sensor at the location of a major borehole in Lodwar, the seat of Turkana County. The borehole is also solar-powered and provides substantial water to LOWASCO, the Lodwar Water and Sanitation Company, the County's water utility. If there is ever a problem at the borehole, especially if water stops flowing for some reason, the sensors detect this discrepancy as they monitor water levels, quantities being pumped, etc. With this data relayed over satellite networks (or, where available, over mobile phone networks), a team can be dispatched immediately to assess the problem and have repairs made.
Prior to the sensors, boreholes could remain broken for weeks and months, because there was no reporting system unless a person actually took the steps to report the breakdown himself or herself. And in the most remote parts of Turkana, communities don't have transportation, often they have no telephones even where there is a mobile network, and so reports were a rarity.
Amid drought, if boreholes break down in Turkana, it can be fatal for the most vulnerable people, and livestock can die in droves. Currently 2.7 million people in Kenya need food aid due to the drought, and by August 2017, that is expected to worsen to 3.5 million people in need of food aid, because the most recent rains largely failed again.

Hall C technicians are working on the "Anaconda," a flexible transfer line that was used to supply cryogenic liquids (liquid helium and nitrogen) to the superconducting magnet for the G-Zero experiment. The Anaconda is being tested and refurbished so that it can be used as the transfer line to deliver cryogenic liquids to the five superconducting magnets that will be part of the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer.

A Technician 5th. Grade (T/5) of General George S. Patton’s 3rd. U.S. Army takes some time to try out a captured German Maschinenpistole 44 (MP 44). The Germans were seeking a way to bridge the gap between rifle rounds and pistol ammunition. The power of rifle rounds could not be taken advantage of at long range where accuracy suffered and pistol ammunition often used in sub-machineguns were useful only in close combat and lacked stopping power at more extended ranges. The Germans had been investigating such an intermediate round since 1918 but the concept never took hold. Developments in small arms, notably in semi-automatic weapons, by the Soviet Union rekindled the idea and in 1942, the forerunner of the MP 44 appeared as the Maschinenkarabiner 1942 (MKb 42). Two versions were tested, one made by Walther (MKb 42(W)) and the other made by Haenel (MKb 42(H)). Both were troop trialed on the Eastern Front in 1942 and the MKb 42(H) proved superior. After some design changes, the Maschinenpistole 43 (MP 43) appeared. The name, however, was misleading as the MP 43 was not a sub-machinegun but this was done on purpose to hide the weapon from Adolf Hitler who forbade rifle development in favor of sub-machineguns. This stance was more of his concern that efforts put into production of a new weapon could not be accomplished in the mass numbers needed to make them fully effective overall. In this, he would be correct. The MP 43 was unable to fire rifle grenades as the Karabiner 98k rifle could due to the weaker 7.92mm Kurz round (in comparison to the full 7.92mm round), could not be used with a bayonet (as the MP 43 was too short), and the round was inadequate for long range sniping. Thus, it could not fully replace the 98k and so it was to be a supplement. In time, Hitler would learn of the deception but by then, the urgent need for the weapon would see him bless it officially. By this time, the MP 44 had appeared and Hitler himself would bestow the new designation Sturmgewehr 44 (StG 44; Assault Rifle 44) upon the weapon. In all, it is believed a total of 424,000 weapons were constructed between the MP 43 and MP 44/StG 44 makes. This was simply too little to have any lasting effect on the outcome of the war…as Hitler had foreseen. The legacy, however, of the StG 44 is that it was the weapon which solidified the class of weapons known as assault rifles which continue to be designed today.

Technicians align, install, and then extend the second set of solar arrays, measuring 46.5 feet (14.2 meters) long and about 13.5 feet (4.1 meters) high, for NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft inside the agency’s Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024. The huge arrays – spanning more than 100 feet when fully deployed, or about the length of a basketball court – will collect sunlight to power the spacecraft as it flies multiple times around Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa, conducting science investigations to determine its potential to support life. on 2/22/18, 12 inmates graduated from the Highway Construction Technician Certification Program at Berry Special Needs Facility (DSNF). This program is the result of a partnership between the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). This pilot program, which is being offered at DSNF, is designed to promote the successful reentry of offenders into the workforce by teaching inmates marketable skills that they can use both while incarcerated and post-release.
The Union of Construction Allied Trades & Technicians (UCATT) represents workers in the construction industries and had around 125,500 members across the UK and Ireland working in both the private and public sectors (as at June 2016). As a result of long running financial difficulties, UCATT members voted to join with Unite the Union in January 2017.
Other British trade unions with large numbers of workers in the construction industries are the General Municipal Boilermakers’ union (GMB) and the Transport & General Workers' Union (TGWU).
This badge depicts the UCATT’s emblem, a three-link chain logo with each link representing their three founding unions (see below). Anyone know what years this badge was in use with UCATT?
.
Timeline:
1971 - UCATT formed from the merger of three building sector unions bringing its membership to more than 260,000 members. The three founding unions of UCATT were the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers (AUBTW), the Association of Building Technicians and the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers and Decorators.
1990 - UCATT admits self-employed construction workers.
2017 - UCATT merged with Unite the Union.
