While it is technically spring, Actual Spring is still just out of reach. Ice on the lake becomes thin and pitted as it melts; it blows in from elsewhere and piles up on the beaches. The surface of the lake will likely freeze again before the warmer weather is here to stay.

A trip up onto the Lewis Pass tops over Waitangi weekend in February, earlier this year. We had a hot couple of days up on the tops, with the only water available via alpine tarns. This shot was taken on the summit of 'The Apprentice', we made it just short of the summit of Mt Technical, the rock became too crumbly without adequate climbing gear.
