This requires a bit of explanation, and unless you are bit of a techie, almost entirely unimportant. This is a test to determine whether Flickr is doing it's image processing (mostly resizing) properly with respect to gamma.

Color spaces of images generally refer to 3 different things: 1) the bounds of the gamut of viewable colors (exactly how red is 0xff0000), 2) the white point or exactly what spectrum do we treat as pure white (usually D65 for a 6500K black body emitter), and a value distribution across that range. Gamma refers to the last one.

Our eyes aren't uniformly sensitive. We can see much more detail at the low end of the intensity range. Roughly this curve looks like X^N for some N. In the case of the sRGB space, which roughly created for normal monitors under normal intensity levels, N = 2.2. Generally, this is a really good thing. We space the values of brightness in the image according to where they will do the most use.

The caviat with working in gamma-corrected spaces is that various maths no longer work right, most notably addition which is needed to resample the images. I'll leave it to those that are interested to see that

(A+B)^2.2 != A^2.2 + B^2.2

and the rest of you can take my word for it.

Now, what does that have to do with this image. Well, to see, you'll have to compare the resampled to the original and notice that the original is exactly twice the size of the Flickr-resampled medium size and is comprised of alternating 1-pixel-wide columns of black and white opposed to the 128 grey of the resized. This is so that when resized, 2 columns will be averaged together into 1 pixel.

Now, assuming that think of 0 as 0 and 255 as 1 (a convenient value for the maximum as image processing does), to do gamma-correct filtering on an sRGB image we do the following:

A = 0^(2.2) // ungamma-corrected black (A=0)

B = 1^(2.2) // ungamma-corrected white (B=1)

C = (A + B)/2 // average colors (0.5)

D = C^(1/2.2) // gamma corrected middle grey

Now, if this in done correctly, D, the pixel in the resized Flickr image should be 186 instead of 128.

What does this all mean? Well, in the grand scheme of things, mostly nothing. Flickr strips color spaces along with all other EXIF data on resize currently, so it is possible they are doing the proper thing and just not recorrecting. But, if that was the case, all the resized images would look substantially darker than the originals. This only deals with the additions to average adjactent pixels when resizing. The less different adjactent pixels, the less the error, and an most photographs it would hardly be noticable on most stuff anyway.

It's pretty uncommon to see any image programs handle this anyway, so this is in no means singling out Flickr. Firefox ignores color spaces all-together. I'm not even sure if Photoshop does everything gamma correct. I'll need to look at the image internals in my own viewer to be sure.

More just curious. Hope you enjoyed this moment of image geekery. Let me know if you have any questions or want to know more.

Getting Hired In Tech — The Value Of Work Experience

It’s the catch-22 of the working world: you’re new and you’re looking for a job, but you need work experience before you can even think about getting hired. In circumstances like these, how’s a techie to get their foot in the door? Who can you convince you’re worth taking a chance on?

If you’re facing this conundrum, you’re in luck: every web developer and designer in business today has gone through the same hiring ordeal, and we know the tricks they used to land their first gig.

We’ll cover every angle of the job search, from utilizing your personal network to finding online job opportunities. I’m so confident that these tactics will help you get hired I’ll even go one step further and guide you through how to make the most of your first gig.

How to find your first tech job

When you’ve got the skills for design or development work and you need a job now, the most important thing is to get your foot in the door. Scoring your first gig will help you build your portfolio, gather references, and demonstrate your talent: all things that will make getting your second, third, and fourth jobs that much easier.

John Feldmann, writer for Insperity Jobs, providers of human resources and business solutions to improve business performance, told us:

“Unless you’re applying for an entry-level job, work experience is often the cornerstone upon which a job applicant is evaluated in the technology field. After that, several factors may come into play – education, cultural fit, interviewing skills – but ultimately, employers want to see a track record of success in the field.”

When looking for your first gig as a designer or developer, think more about the experience you’re trying to gain rather than the pay.

Don’t get me wrong – being paid for your work is vital to your career (and your hungry stomach!).

But when you’re starting out and peddling your empty resume, impressing a clienton a low-paying (or pro bono) job can be more valuable in the long run than wasting away as you try to find a paying job. This might mean building a website for a friend, taking on a part-time job, or entering an unpaid internship. But as long as you are confident that you’ll get a great portfolio piece (or pieces) out of your experience, your hard work will pay off.

“If there was one thing I could tell all job seekers, it’s get experience – and get it early. Not only does it help you develop your skillset, but it allows you to get accustomed to the industry/work environment. You’ll have a better idea of how the business works, how to interact with people, and so on. I’m a huge advocate of internships for that reason. If I just hopped into a full-time job without knowing how things worked in an office, I’d be a little overwhelmed. Getting that experience early really does make a difference.”

Ariella Coombs, managing editor for CareeRealism.

When considering which jobs to take on, always remember: do it for the money, the contact, or the experience.

Keeping all this in mind, here are a few tips on how to find a job.

Reach out to everyone you know – and I mean everyone!

When you start your job search, your first step is to tell everyone – and I mean everyone – that you’re looking. Make your announcement through email, LinkedIn,Facebook, or carrier pigeon – it doesn’t matter; just get the word out that you’re ready to take on new and challenging work! Maybe your mom’s friend needs a new website for her flower shop. Maybe your high school music teacher could use some help building an events page.

You’ll never know until you ask.

As CareerFoundry CMO and Creative Director Emil Lamprecht recounts, one of his secrets to getting hired as a new freelancer was to tell everyone he knew that he was looking for work. That meant emailing friends, friends of friends, co-workers, and even ex-colleagues.

Since your resume is probably fairly blank right now and your portfolio non-existent, your best bet is to start reaching out to people who already know you and your work ethic. Given that they know you and probably place some level of trust in you, your existing contacts are more likely to hire you than a complete stranger.

When you write to your friends and contacts, let them know about your career change and the specific type of work you’re looking for. Looking to build websites? Great! But tell them what kind of websites you specialize in. Want to design mobile apps? Let your contacts know which platforms you work in.

Remember: even if your contacts can’t pay much or anything at all, gaining experience can be a springboard to future paying jobs by building your portfolio and helping you gather referrals.

Tap into people you don’t know

Once you’ve told your grandmom, your yoga instructor, and all of their friends that you’re on the market, it’s time to reach out to people you don’t know. And while the Internet can be a great resource for new job seekers,the millions of listed job openings listed online can be overwhelming. Here I break down how to find a job online without pulling out all of your hair.

Your alumni association

If you’ve earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree, chances are your university has established ways for you to network with alumni from your institution. Find alumniwho work in the field you want to enter, and set up informational interviews to learn how they got started.

Even though you might not have met the alumni you’ll reach out to, the fact that you graduated from the same institution is likely to make them more receptive toward you. And you never know: you can get some career-building advice, or maybe you’ll meet your next mentor!

Here are some ways to connect with professionals from your alma mater:

Your alumni association’s LinkedIn group: here you can post about what you’re looking for. If anyone knows of a relevant opening they might pass it along to you

LinkedIn search: LinkedIn offers a great search tool that lets you filter your extended network by university, title, location, and more

Your alumni directory: Similar to LinkedIn’s search, use this tool to search for alumni in the position you aim to enter and ask for an informational interview

My radio shack has equipment dating from the 1941 radio in the left foreground to the modern computers to the right.

This may shatter my reputation as a techie, but I have hung on to this Nokia phone since 2001-- I really am not a huge mobile phone user, and I come it at max maybe 150 minutes a month. All this phone does is enable me to make phone calls (shocking), though in fits of boredom, I have played "Snake" on it.

As you may notice, it has been sporting a lovely bit of duct tape to keep the battery connected.

But Old Nokie is now retired, and I am sending this phone via my new Motoroloa V10, a camera phone that I used to take this picture. Actually, I first got a Nokia 6225i but never got it to send pictures nor could anyone at the store or the tech support line. Hint- never buy a new phone at the store where it is so new, the employee do not know how to use it.

I am now using phone technology that ahs been around for 2-3 years. I guess I am a phone Luddite or Lagger.

Sathya recently moved back to Bangalore from Chennai. He is a techie into Oracle's SQL.

He loves Chicken, Meat, Beer and other food I'm not supposed to be typing here.

Innocent techie spends 50 days in Jail

Wrongly accused of defaming Shivaji on net

This is the first page headlines in Times of India by a report filed by Ketan Tanna

Nov 3 2007.

According to him a Bangalore based youth Kailash K was arrested for uploading

An insulting picture of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Orkut.. tht allegedly had led to riots in Pune …Nov2006.

He was arrested under the Information Technology Act 2000, and lodged at Yerwada Jail.He was there as an undertrial for 50 days .

His IP provider was Airtel Bharti they had provided the requisite information that led to his arrest.

However it turned out that the information provided by the provider was wrong and the actual culprits have been nabbed.

Kailash K has been duly released.

You can read the entire report in Times of India..

What I would like to warn the present day over enthusiastic bloggers is that Big Brother is watching you all the time.

I must tell you that last year at Buzznet my Photographer No1 site was hacked and the hacker went about posting pornographic stuff and had access to all my uploading, my messages and other tools..

I had informed Buzznet Support , the site was frozen but the damage came later , when this hacked contents were seen by Shia fundamentalists, I could not delete it as the controls were with the Developer..but they should have blocked my site from viewing which they did not do..I was threatened with Fatwas, went through the most harrowing experience. Deleted almost 11000 blogs in a single night , I was for the first time disillusioned as a photo blogger.

I respect all religion, I am not into porn, I like any one else hate the unnecessary killings of Muslims by Muslims or terrorism in any form.I am against racism too.

So it is shocking this single episode Kafkaesque says the Times journalist of the arrest of Kailash K.

Are we bloggers really safe? I don’t even know what happened to Gautam Buddhi who was alleged to have posted hate messages to President Bush from the Yahoo Finance Board network…

The cops catch the wrong man

For posting an insulting picture

Of Chattrapati Shivaji on Orkut

Lock him for 50 days

Crime they say never pays

But later they realize

The had made a mistake

Travesty of Cybernetic justice in a Maze

Such are police investigative ways

False encounters

False complaints

Extortions blackmail

by a few rogue cops to get a raise

there are good cops we do praise

for our safety hoodlums chase

case after case

meticulously they liase

but putting a wrong man in prison

for a crime he did not commit

a thought badly misplaced

our system

of law and order

totally disgraced

Techie Silliness: Lighting provided by the sun (on the background) and two White Lighting X1600 mono lights powered by a Paul Buff Vagabond unit. The two mono lights were above slightly to camera right and left and were difused with two brolly boxes (think a shoot through umbrella with a black backing to stop the light from spilling back, it's often considered a poor man's softbox... in this case it's a very portable softbox). Flashes triggered by Pocket Wizard Plus units...

I like using studio lights for the formal photos and the bridal stuff if it happens to work out. The light provided by the exteral mono-lights allows the light to be much more controlled and usually provides a ton more light allowing me to drop my ISO and stop down a bit for a cleaner photo with better color.
