Today was absolutey gorgeous weather and I took the opportunity to go on a 3.5 mile hike in Picayune Strand State Forest. I have a hobby called geocaching. Being the techie/gadget girl that I am, I like hunting for "treasure" with my gps. Geocaching is world wide and its such a blast!
Today I did what is called a "multi-cache." You are given one set of coordinates and you have to find the treasure, which in turn gives you another set of coordinates, and so on. This one had five stages. I didn't have any paper, so I had to write the instructions on my hand. In the end, I found the "treasure," in this case, an ammo can. Once you find the cache, you sign the log to say "I was here." Sometimes, there will be trade items inside, as well as special coins for tracking and something called travel bugs. Travel bugs are in the shape of a dog tag and are meant to travel from cache to cache. Sometimes they have a mission, such as, "I want to visit every state capital in the country." Then people will take them to a cache near their state capital, then the next person, and so on...
If you're looking for a fun hobby that takes you to places you would otherwise not visit, then you should try it! If you want to learn more, go to geocaching.com. Type in your zip code and you'll be amazed how many are close to you.
Another of Hugh's boring non-art techie challenges. The challenge is to produce three drops of a different colour, equally spaced, in a vertical line. In theory this is preparation for some "art"!
This time, just for fun, add a reflection. You may note that the order of the colours has changed - a timing issue. I have left the bubbles and rings in place so that you can see the water surface. I have also left the two spurious drops (G & B), with their reflections in the image. Can you tell me why the green reflection of the spurious drop is in the "wrong" place?

Okay, I came a little late with this one, but you can see why. I was on the road, wardriving ;-)
Actually, I still am, this shot is edited in the car, and uploaded from the car, on the move (when I realised that I won't be able to mak iet home on time). Please appreciate the effort, and forgive me for being late 11 minutes. After all, I did it in style, at least. :)
Even my fiancee called at midnight to see if everything's all right -- you can see how popular this project is now. :)) I also ran into a couple of friends on the way, and we had a little chat, and it took a bit too long.
What you see here is my HTC Touch Pro, in the car, running GSM, GPS and Wi-Fi, a small program called "WiFiFoFum", for Windows Mobile 6.1. It generates a small database with all the wireless access points we encounter, adds GPS coordinates as well, and saves it all into a rather large XML file.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Wardriving is the act of searching for Wi-Fi wireless networks by a person in a moving vehicle, using a portable computer or PDA. Wardriving was named after the term wardialing from the 1983 film WarGames, which involved searching for computer systems with software that dialed numbers sequentially to see which ones were connected to a fax machine or computer.
Warbiking is essentially the same as wardriving, but it involves searching for wireless networks while on a moving bicycle or motorcycle. This activity is sometimes facilitated by the mounting of a wifi-capable device on the vehicle itself.
Warwalking (sometimes warjogging) is similar in nature to wardriving, except that it is done on foot rather than conducted from a moving vehicle. The disadvantages of this approach consist in slower speed of travel (resulting in fewer and more infrequently discovered networks) and the absence of a convenient computing environment. Consequently, handheld devices such as Pocket PCs, which can perform such tasks while one is walking or standing, have predominated in this area. The inclusion of integrated Wi-Fi capabilities on these devices has widely expanded the extent of this practice.
To us, it's more like a metropolitan sport nowadays. :) Drive or walk about your favourite areas of dwelling, and see where you can have free internet access. It can be vital at times, or fun some other times. Some people are even building Wi-Fi maps, by overlapping their geotagged access point info with a map, like those provided by Google Maps.
I've found such a map on the net, while visiting London, and it was indeed pretty useful. However, they've got far less free hotspots, but I think I've already ranted about that one before. :)
Anyway, what I did here actually was just testing the phone and the software, having some fun driving around slowly in the pouring rain. (Remember to always focus on the traffic, no on your device!) I've bought this adaptable car phone / PDA holder yesterday, and I wanted to try it out live, to see how it works. And when I saw how many results I was getting (at times the screen was overcrowded!), I have decided that this one needs a shot. :)
1/6 second handheld exposure, f/2.77, ISO 100, 36mm (focal length equiv.) wide, the widest the S3 IS can do. Uploaded from the car, while on the move.
The "Dude Lunch" is an informal, casual, and yes, so far all-male monthly gathering of geeky, techie guys started about a year ago by Dan and Nathan. A revolving group of up to ten get together, share what's up, and imagine what's ahead.
A slice of one of my bookshelves. This one holds the techie books and the "real" books. Tagging this one may take a while...
This is the very first few things, so it's early yet but items include photos, his coffee cup, his wallet, his keys, fave hats, cane, guitar pick, items about Texas, the Dallas Cowboys, Route 66, even his mouse :) i don't want photos up here, i want OBJECTS - things you can hold in your hand - things he held in his hand... i would much rather have a digital photo frame with every pic of him ever, running 24 hours a day, and then everything else be a "feelie"...
anyway, i did this because our sitting room used to be sort of his office, so i thought it appropriate to leave a corner to his memory... i am adding things to it as i think of them and there are photos i want to add and i still have to get mom in on it, so, there will eventually be a lot of stuff...
are these odds and ends what he wanted to be remembered for? maybe not... but, i want this wall to be the way we remember him...

I decided to use the general theme of Get Connected for Teen Tech Week this year to highlight some of our new techie nonfiction books and some favorite science fiction novels with tech elements.
OK, if you're of the techie sort, read no more. This is for tech-dummie like myself.
Ever since the new flickr roll-out, there has been lots of complaints about it being very slow when fetching photos, and that some users are also having difficulties editing the Cover Banner photo.
Off flickr, I recently couldn't edit my Google Blog on banking history anymore. That prompted me to ask my work place's IT help, and he suggested that I try using Goolge Chrome as the interent browser (I was using the old Internet Explorer 8.0).
Oh man! What a miracle, the photo loading is much much faster when I use Google Chrome rather than the old Internet Explorer 8, and now I can edit my Cover Banner photo, and also edit my Google blog again.
So here is a little tip, if you want to make flickr faster, try using Google Chrome. Installation takes a few minutes even for a tech-dummie like me. If I could do it, anyone can. Download it from here:

Although I'm not accustomed to post these kind of images (screenshots), I wanted to tell ya how pretty I find this woman, it's not exactly the kind of girl you will define as "beautiful" but rather smart-looking.. God I love how her neckless suits her! :-)

Say hello to my new techie baby, my Sony Cybershot DSC-W220. My parents got her for me this Christmas, yay~
Its nice to finally be able to upgrade from my old digital camera. I don't use my old point and shoot that much, most of the time I rely on my DSLR. But during those rare moments when I'm too lazy to carry a big camera around, I bring my Casio Exilim Z75. I've had it for about 2 1/2 years now.
The only thing I don't like about my new baby is that it can't take multiple shots on timer. Oh, and also the fact that I can't zoom in while taking a video. But other than that, I love it <3
I gave my old camera to my sister, she's been playing around with it. She named it "Weasley" (as in Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter series) because it's a hand-me-down, hehe.
Alex took me out to a suprise dinner at the Noodle Shop to present me with my engagement ring. We got all dressed up and had a lovely (and tasty!) dinner, after which he subtly got down on one knee and proposed again. It was all very mellow (thank you honey!) and nice. :)
It can be almost black looking or catch the light and pop blue. :D

Mild-mannered techie, Brian Bracket, was working in the computer lab late one evening, and his brain was about to crash. His department, for reasons unbeknownst to him, had been given a daunting government encryption viability assignment, and the deadline was tomorrow. Convinced he could succeed where his coworkers had failed, Brian remained after hours, tirelessly attempting to crack the code and show those DC eggheads they don’t know squat. And, he had almost done it, when all of a sudden his idiot friends showed up unexpectedly with some beers and a couple large cheeses. Startled, and having just initiated a variable vector algorithm wizard, Brian totally spilled his Pepsi all over the keyboard.
As fate would have it, that very soda can contained traces of a unusual metal which in ancient times had existed in the form of a very powerful amulet, known to legend as simply, "The Fury." As the story goes, a very powerful wizard had been up all night with his buddies, avoiding working on his junior thesis and instead turning farts into gold, when his mom woke up, got wicked mad, and made them all go home. The wizard thought this was really uncool, so, on the fly, he altered the spell they’d been using to instead turn his next pungent emanation into a metal deadbolt lock he could put on the basement door -- so his mom couldn’t just barge in whenever she felt like it.
But, things didn't turn out the way he had hoped. Instead, when all the smoke had cleared, he noticed an amulet lying upon the ground. He was kind of a dumb kid, so he just picked it up and put it on, without knowing what it would do to him. Instantly, he was transformed into a hulking beast, double his size and pretty freakin' strong. The anger he had been feeling deep in within gut had manifested itself into a mystical metallic object, capable of reflecting his emotional distress into a tangible alteration of his physical self. And, he was pretty freakin' strong. But, as we all know, moms don't put up with that kind of crap, so she smacked him upside the head, yanked the amulet from his neck and tossed it into the garbage.
Now, in the present day, during the worst thunderstorm of the year, somehow the combination of being rudely interrupted by his idiot friends, the fact he had just begun the algorithm wizard, and the presence of those minute traces of magical fart metal in his can, bestowed upon Brian Bracket the ability to turn into pretty freakin’ strong monster whenever he wants to. Sometimes, though, when he lets one rip, he starts to transform unexpectedly, but he’s cool with that now.
THE END
