At Children's Bookshop & Teaching Supplies, you can get all sorts of educational material for kids. We bought Juliana a magnetic puzzle map of the United States and she is learning quite well, so far. For example, I'll ask her where she was born. She'll point to Texas, then say it, and then put it on the right spot on the map. Genius girl right here.

Volunteer Uganda 2014 Teaching and Orphanage program

Volunteer in one of two local orphanages in the Wakiso district, located outside of the city of Kampala. The village orphanage and school not only provide a home and safe haven this is where the children have classes.

Most of these children have lost parents to HIV/Aids. Some have been abandoned, and they know abuse, hunger and fear. The orphanage strives to provide a better future for some of the most vulnerable children in Uganda. As a volunteer, you will primarily assist with the daily care of the kids; getting them ready for school, brushing teeth, reading to them. After-school activates you can play games, arrange activities, create arts & crafts projects and share your time and caring with these wonderful children.

Prior experience not necessary, volunteers should have a lot of patience, an open mind and a sense of compassion. The children range in age from 3yrs-13yrs old.

Teaching is done in groups and individually, depending on the need and the situation.

B was the only person I knew at EF who could match the energy level of the primary school kids some of us taught on contract at First Auto Works Primary School. We both taught several groups there, usually a room of 30 kids - mine were 9-10 years old and precocious, straining for opportunities to impress me with all the English they knew. The experience scared the hell out of me, but I learned more from teaching them than I did most of my other classes.

Mahmood, a teacher at the UK-supported Agriculture College in Lashkar Gah, Helmand province, says: "Afghanistan is still an agriculturally backward country, because we are still subsistence farmers and have to grow food for our families"

Afghanistan currently produces 90% of the world’s opium, the key ingredient in heroin. The UK-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Helmand Province is helping Afghanistan to tackle the country’s illegal drugs trade which destroys lives around the world.

At this new training college, young Afghan farmers are learning to grow legal crops that can give them an alternative income to opium. Established farmers are destroying poppy fields so they can use the land to grow wheat and other crops from subsidised seeds.

This work is seeing results - poppy cultivation in Helmand is falling as farmers start to grow new crops. To curtail the traffickers, Afghanistan’s counter narcotics police play a crucial role finding and destroying smuggled drugs before they leave the country.

Volunteer Guatemala Quetzaltenango: Teaching Program: July 2013: Anna M'Gucken: "This experience provided me with a great opportunity to really learn more about another culture, and opened my eyes a lot of new things and perspectives. I am so glad to have been able to volunteer and live with a host family and take Spanish lessons, it made the travel experience sooo much more valuable".
