Walking the dog this morning, I spotted a flock of swifts drinking from the canal while in flight. I headed back for my camera and ratttled off 100s of shots but barely any were in focus. This is the closest I got. Fun fact of the day: a flock of swifts is known as a scream.
6043 was one of eight AEC Swifts with Pennine bodywork that had been ordered by Rochdale but arrived after the creation of the new Selnec PTE. By the time of this photograph in September 1974 the boundaries had been changed with local government reorganisation and Selnec had become Greater Manchester Transport.
During this time the eight Swifts had moved from Rochdale to Leigh where as well as operating local work they made it to far flung places such as Warrington, which by now was in Cheshire and not Lancashire.
This one however is awaiting departure on a local service to the delightfully named 'Plank Lane' on route 591. Although the Selnec Northern are fleetname with magenta flash has been removed, the new order of 'Greater Manchester Transport' complete with wavy 'M' insigina had yet to be applied.
Following their withdrawl the eight vehicles were diposed of to Staffordshire independent Berresfords Motors and at least six of the batch made it into service, with the others providing spares. This one spent most of it's second life on long term hire to the associated Stoniers fleet.
This particular example was to be the longest lived of the batch and even made it to PMT ownership following the takeover. Not bad for a much maligned chassis that was doomed to fail in many fleets up and down the land.

A common swift (Apus apus) flying overhead. Uploaded mostly for interest as opposed to pictorial appeal.
I've no idea why this would be abandoned on the street and not broken for parts, unless something dodgy's going on. It's clearly been sat for a long time as there's a lot of tree crap underneath and it's been vandalised, but weirdly both plates were sat on the dashboard.
Mixed series of six. Arlington Reservoir was not nice in the pouring rain. The hirundines were skimming the surface in their hundreds and I tried to get a few pics while feeling the water seeping in. I upped the speed which did not help that much but, apart from the rain, it was a lovely sight. First time I have seen swifts at low level.
Reasonable flocks of these most aerial birds, along with Needletail, have been moving northward over the last few days. The ease with which they arc across the sky makes for a thrilling sight.

Taylor Swift Speak Now Tour Hots Sydney, Australia
You might have heard that Taylor Swift was spotted taking in the view of Sydney yesterday, including even catching a harbour cruise with her friends and family.
Taylor is currently on tour in Australia, and has been hard to spot as she's been doing the rounds.
The Aussie press spotted her boarding a boat in Sydney Harbour for an evening cruise.
Taylor's first Sydney took place tonight at a jam packed Allphones Arena.
The costumes and set were amazing, as a largely teenage girl audience of 14,000 or so cheered and screamed to their teen idol.
Taylor seemed to love playing to the full Allphones Arena, playing five different guitars, two banjos, the piano and a ukele. We also counted at least four different costume changes.
The country music icon is known for writing "13" on her hand before each show because it's her lucky number. Dozens of '13' signs were in the crowd, and some young ladies wrote it on their bodies also.
Taylor told the press "I was born on the 13th. My first album went gold in 13 weeks. My first No.1 song had a 13-second intro and every time I've won an award I've been seated in either the 13th seat, the 13th row, the 13th section or row M, which is the 13th letter," she has previously said.
We wish Taylor well on her amazing career to date and hope she enjoys the rest of her tour and stay in Australia.

Taylor Swift, who is currently headlining sold-out stadiums and arenas on the North American leg of her blockbuster TAYLOR SWIFT SPEAK NOW WORLD TOUR 2011 has announced that in response to strong fan demand she will extend the tour into 2012 with capital city dates around Australia.
The four-time GRAMMY winner's SPEAK NOW performance is a two-hour theatrical presentation, reminiscent of a Broadway experience. The show features elaborate costumes, dancers, aerialists, changing sets, and innovative choreography and instrumentation showcased on a multi-level stage.
Taylor plays five different guitars in the show, plus two banjos, the ukulele and the piano, and changes costumes nine times over the course of the evening. During the concert she moves right around the venue, using different stages, thereby giving every audience member a great seat.

Skokie Swift Artic 53 is southbound approaching Oakton St. on a cold Saturday afternoon in January 1985.
The Common Swift return to the breeding places in their old colony approximately the same time each year, around the 15th of May in Hamburg. It is faithful to its breeding place so that the pairs may breed together for many years. When one partner doesn't come back from Africa or dies during its stay, its place will be immediately taken by another bird of the same sex. Swifts lay 2-3 eggs and breed and hatch the chicks together. In these days they fly late until dark, while the non breeders of a colony assemble and fly high in the sky to sleep there on the wing. At the end of July the young will fly out, mostly right after sunset and will never come back to the nest. They need no exercises in flying and after a few moments they practice as well as the adults. Just in time around the 15th of August the parents will leave Hamburg for Africa.

My new pullip! I've wanted Uncanricky for a while now, and I got her second hand, my first second hand doll!
Swift, lovely to see them back 'screaming' their way around our houses.Only six but so happy to see them at all.
The first of a few shots from last week's trip to Malta. Perhaps the buses which currently attract the attention of more UK enthusiasts than any others on the island are the small clutch of near original ex London AEC Swifts. Their 'in traffic' numbers vary, and on the day of our visit to the maintenance facility at Pembroke only GVH 133 appeared serviceable with two others undergoing maintenance.

If you're American, you could be forgiven for thinking that sedans aren't that special. Crossovers are all the rage in North America these days, so much so that come companies are cancelling their sedan lineups altogether.
In other parts of the world, however, people still like sedans. A lot. They rate them so much, in fact, that manufacturers are creating makeshift sedans just to feed that demand. Exhibit A: the Swift Dzire.
The Swift (a current example of which is seen on the left in this photo) is a hatchback - it was designed primarily as such and is sold as such. The Dzire is what you get when you want to quickly turn a popular hatchback into something resembling a sedan. Looking at these two cars side by side, you can see how one developed from the other.
Suzuki is not alone in this - Honda, Mazda, Hyundai, and Ford, among others, have all done similar conversions for some of their hatchbacks. These models tend to be developed for the Indian and South Asian markets, and a few find their way to Latin America and the Caribbean as well. The Swift Dzire is officially imported to Jamaica by Suzuki, and isn't too hard to find on Jamaican streets.
