Washington Crossing Bridge (officially Washington Crossing Toll Supported Bridge) The history of crossing the Delaware River at Washington Crossing is noted by significant floods that altered the course of the bridge.

Imagine the depth of the waters as it flowed just over the present deck in the flood of August 1955. One lot of water indeed.

++++++++++++++++

The Flood of January 8, 1841 floated away the first wooden structure. The flood of October 10, 1903 removed the superstructure of the replacement bridge. A new bridge was constructed and opened in 1904.

"The flood of August 19, 1955 did considerable damage to the bridge. Floating debris in the form of whole trees, steel barrels and even houses, smashed against the bridge resulting in damage to all 6 spans. More than half of all the bottom chords of the bridge were bent, torn and twisted beyond ever being straightened. These members were replaced with new fabricated steel members and the bridge was reopened to traffic on November 17, 1955."

"The bridge underwent an extensive structural rehabilitation in the fall of 1994. Many truss members were replaced with new fabricated galvanized steel. Floor system members and the open steel grid deck were replaced in the first three bays of each end span. All remaining structural steel was blast cleaned, metalized and painted. A new wooden sidewalk was installed and renovations were made at both approaches to the bridge." www.drjtbc.org/default.aspx?pageid=71

++++++++++++++++++

My father took my sister and I to see the flooding at the Washington Crossing Bridge during the 1955 flood. I would have been thirteen.

I remember the flood waters flowing over the deck and large logs, trees, and even a barn swiftly moving down the river and striking the bridge at the level of the deck.

Folks, sightseers were out in a motorboat which sheered a propeller pin and was powerless. It floated into the bridge. A New Jersey State Trooper who was on duty at the bridge walked out onto the deck with water flowing about his feet to rescue the people.

He was unhappy with them and his words expressed his displeasure.

The power of the water was most impressive. I remember the lesson to this day in 2014, 59 years later.

5/81: FDNY Super Pumper System - Tillary St & Randalls Island, NY

Updated about 7 months ago

Fire Department of New York

Super Pumper System

conceived by Gibbs & Cox, naval architects & marine engineers

designed & constructed by Mack Trucks - 1963

operational units delivered and accepted 1965

Final cost for design & construction was $875,000

In addition to the Super Pumper and Super Tender, the plan called for the Super Pumper to be supported by three "Satellite" units, which were basically a smaller hose tender, with 2000' of super high pressure 4 1/2" diameter hose, and a roof mounted 4000 g.p.m. water cannon. The three Satellites were refurbished in 1980.

In circa 1982, the three Satellite support plan was revised, and expanded to include a total of six Satellite units. But alas, the Super Pumper System was retired shortly after. The Satellites were re-equipped with conventional hose and responded to to major fires in a support capacity, until they too were retired..

The Super Pumper was designed in the day of pumper (known as engines in FDNY parlance) capacities of mediocre capacity, e.g. 1000 gpm.

As with any large city port, the prevalence of massive warehouses and piers made for spectacular fires. `Unfortunately, the smaller pumpers were not up to the task.

So, the Super Pumper was designed to take advantage of the waterfront supply of water, and / or the high pressure hydrant system in most of the industrial areas of New York City.

While I've never witnessed it personally, it has been reported that the 7" water cannon / monitor on the Super Tender tractor was capable of blasting holes in the brick walls of warehouses. It's been said that in one instance in which the Super Pumper System responded to, that the water cannon punched a hole in the wall of the warehouse, ripped a significantly sized piece of machinery that had been bolted to the concrete floor, and pushed it clear across the warehouse floor to the other side.

It should be noted that the water cannon in these images was the second design. The first was slightly different and had a reducing nozzle to increase pressure and water throw.

Why it went out of service:

According to various sources, there were two reasons the Super Pumper System was retired.

The publicized and commonly accepted reason was that the cost of maintaining the system which was so infrequently used, was cost prohibitive.

The second reason which was told to us by one of the engineers, was more technical and consisted of two factors:

1) When constructed, the Napier Deltic diesel engine that powered the pump was mounted on the trailer. However, the air compressor and air reservoir for starting that diesel was mounted on the Mack tractor.

2) That model Mack tractor (that pulled the pump trailer, was prone to be out of service for repair frequently.

Even though the tractor of the Super Tender was of identical model, it was not equipped with an air compressor and therefore could not be used to start the Napier Deltic diesel engine.

Even so, with only one tractor in service (hypothetically if the other was out of service for repair) and had both unit been equipped with air compressors, only one piece of equipment could be pulled at one time. This would have required a third "spare" tractor, and this was not accounted for in the final plan.

Whether this reason can be confirmed through official channels at this time remains to be seen.

Main body of Task Force Kitgum moves into Life Support Area Fist

By Spc. Jason Nolte

KITGUM, Uganda – Weeks of hard work have come to a head for the advanced and torch parties for Natural Fire 10 as the main body moved from Entebbe to Kitgum and into the new home on Life Support Area (LSA) Fist on Pajimo Barracks.

The heat of the day was broken by a strong breeze as the first group arrived by CH-47 Chinooks. They quickly carried the baggage to waiting cargo handlers, then loaded onto separate buses for transportation to the reception point.

The joint forces assigned to Task Force Kitgum as part of Combined Joint Task Force Lion were met at the reception point by 1st Sgt. Devika Hull, Task Force S-1 from the 560th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.

“Accountability,” Hull explains the reason everyone had to sign in, “Makes sure everyone is where they’re supposed to be.”

After signing in, the incoming troops were given a brief on the rules of the LSA by Cpt. Ramlakhan, Command, 5th Quartermaster Company, who had previously helped guide the helicopters in. Once oriented, the incoming troops were shown to their new berths in the surrounding tents.

“It went well,” Hull says, “21st TSC (Theater Sustainment Command) had a well laid out plan. Capt. Ramlakhan met them at the flight line and stayed with them the whole time.”

Lt. Col. Michael Cortez, Commander, 21st TSC Special Troops Battalion explains the roll of the 21st TSC, “We were responsible, both in Entebbe with the HRSC-E (Human Resources Sustainment Center – Europe) and here with the 5th Quartermaster, for Reception, Staging, Onward Movement, and Integration of hundreds of soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen.”

Later in the evening, after darkness had fallen in rural Uganda, a line of buses rolled up the dirt roads leading to the LSA, bringing the second group of troops in for the day. Filling up the tents and filling up the Task Force in order to complete its mission.

Natural Fire 10 is a routine, scheduled training exercise which offers an opportunity for East African Community Partner Nations and the US military to work together on a humanitarian assistance mission. Working together all parties will learn from each other to increase regional capabilities to respond to complex humanitarian emergencies.

Some Comma Strips will be supporting my neck, when I'll take a nap during my long distance flight

Tomatoes are supported by strings running between wooden stakes. The lead stake is a strong metal post. Then hardwood stakes are placed between groups of two tomato plants. We use 4 foot stakes for most tomatoes, 5 foot stakes for cherry tomatoes. A string is tied securely to the lead stake, then run to the next stake, looped around and pulled tight, then to the next stake, etc. At the other end of the row, the string is tied securely to the metal post, then run down the other side of the row of plants to the next stake, just as before. That gives us two strings running down the row with the tomato plants in between. This is called the San Diego weave or sometimes the Florida weave. There are variations in which the string is run between the plants also rather than just along the outside of the stakes. In my opinion, more work for negligible advantage.

Many growers use plastic string because it's light and smooth and easy to handle. You can buy a box with a clip that attaches to your belt. We use sisal baling twine. It's biodegradable, so if some gets left in the field or winds up in the compost it's no problem. Baling twine comes in a package of two 4500 foot rolls. A roll fits into a 5 gallon bucket for ease in carrying around, but it weighs about 10-15 lb, so it's not something you can attach to your belt (if you want your pants to stay up). We just carry it to the end of the row stretching the string out, then work it onto the stakes.

The plants can flop around within the string/stake area, but can't fall to the ground. This keeps the fruit off the ground. Air around the plants keeps the leaves and fruit dry, which inhibits fungus problems.

We put a string on when the plants get tall enough to be in danger of being blown over in wind. After that we have to add strings as the plant gets higher. Ideally we'd put about four layers of string on, but the later strings are needed when we're occupied with other tasks on the farm, so sometimes we get only three layers on. If we miss a stringing, the plants get unruly and it takes much longer to get the strings on, since the plants have to be lifted individually to get the strings under them for support.

Solidarity Rally for Israel in Jackson, MS 10.8.14

After a quick break for lunch and we knew the gearbox was in right we set about installing the cross member which holds the engine and gearbox up in place in the bus. As you can see from the missing black paint it was fair hammered with a rubber mallet to get it up between the chassis legs. The cross member was bolted up tight then the rear flexible mount fitted to the gearbox. The exhaust mount was attached along with two of the prop bolts. We will need the back lift up so I can turn everything to fit the last two.

Through the Nestlé Creating Shared Value prize, we assist sustainable development projects via financial support and technical expertise. Last year’s runner-up was MSABI, a not-for-profit organization, which runs one of the largest rural water, sanitation and hygiene programmes in Tanzania. Our support will help increase the reach, scale and capabilities of their programme in Tanzania, where only 47% of the rural population have access to safe water and only 15% have access to improved sanitation.

We support health professionals as they provide parents with objective nutrition advice for infants and young children. The Nestlé Nutrition Institute (NNI) provides scientific workshops and continued professional education. As the world’s largest private publisher of nutrition information, it is also a widely recognised source of some of the most up-to-date findings about breastfeeding and nutrition for mothers, infants and young children.

Arabic (العربية al-ʻarabīyah or عربي/عربى ʻarabī ) ( [al ʕarabijja] (help·info) or ( [ʕarabi] (help·info)) is a name applied to the descendants of the Classical Arabic language of the 6th century AD. This includes both the literary language and the spoken Arabic varieties.

The literary language is called Modern Standard Arabic or Literary Arabic. It is currently the only official form of Arabic, used in most written documents as well as in formal spoken occasions, such as lectures and news broadcasts. In 1912, Moroccan Arabic was official in Morocco for some time, before Morocco joined the Arab League.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

A few people gathered in Minneapolis to support the feminist punk band Pussy Riot who were sentenced to 2 years in prison for "hooliganism" after recording a performance without permission in a Russian Orthodox church. The group's trademark look is a colored balaclava. There were only a few people here, but there were events at over 50 cities around the world for Global Pussy Riot Day.

TAO generally supports orphans & vulnerable children by training their carers to create agri-businesses. At times we also support capital projects, such as this project to build demonstration housing in central and western Uganda. Houses with corrugated iron roofs from which water was collected into ferro-concrete water tanks were built for around 50 households, a number of them – such as this one, actually headed up by orphans.

In all, 600 households were supported to improve their farming, 230 received ferro-concrete water tanks and TAO worked with the remaining participating families to help them generate and save farming income to fund their own houses and water tanks.
