Nubra, is a tri-armed valley located to the north east of Ladakh valley. Like the rest of the Tibetan Plateau, Nubra is a high altitude cold desert with rare precipitation and scant vegetation except along river beds. Between Hundar and Diskit, the two major settlements in the valley, lie several kilometres of sand dunes, and (two-humped) bactrian camels graze in the neighbouring "forests" of seabuckthorn.

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!
I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best photography to date...
Just north of Arapahoe Nebraska, the first non severe cells of the day were putting on a spectacular display. I pulled off to get some incredible Nebraska stormscapes!

Greetings Everyone, I haven't posted many new pics since last chase season and the 2020 is upon us. Looking for our first set of storms in the coming weeks and I'll be streaming live and of course some of the best storm photography one could ask for.
2020 Update...I've been revamping how I do things. One of those things is to go back and correct how I did my post processing of images. Several Years of over Colorizing over Saturation Adding color... etc. Yes I'm guilty of doing so and I have been going back and replacing thousands of images in hundreds of sets over these past few months here on Flickr my Fine Arts America Site.
The May 7, 2016 Colorado Tornado Event was by far one of my favorite chase days to date. I was able to capture the full genesis of a tornado. From birth to death. It was a quest of mine to do this in a photography medium. Epic severe weather structure, like once in a lifetime structure to capture. But post processing was a nightmare. The images came out well ... Defined but over colored over saturated etc.
Instead of replacing the images this will be a whole new set with a few hundred new images that I didn't post on the original set back in 2016. I've thought about re-editing these images for a long time and they are finally done. No Altercations what so ever. No Added Light, Color, Contrast.
I've brought them directly from RAW. Simply the way I should have done it in the first place!

The forecast on this day was calling for 25mph winds and normally that would keep most people off the dunes, tourist at least. Us photographers on the other hand, most would see that as an opportunity. Personally, this was my second day on the dunes that week and first time ever being in a sandstorm. Come to find out, it was gusting 35+ mph and it wasn't nearly as fun as I thought it would be. Hindsight would tell me now that I should have bought goggles because often I would just sit there with my eyes closed for a minute or two as the gusts came on. I was there for hours, 4 at least and making my way through the dunes taking as many photos as I can find sweeping converging lines. I have so many photos to go through from this day but I stopped at the first one that I liked, which means there should be more to come soon! As I was walking back to my car, I couldn't help but be overwhelmed with the feeling of joy. I couldn't have been more happy to be pelted by sand all day, picking sand out of my ear for the next 24 hours. I thoroughly recommend that if you are going to shoot sand dunes and there are high winds on the forecast, DO IT!

Brákin monument
in remembrance of Þorgerður Brák and her ill fate.
She had been the nanny and foster-mother to Egill the son of Skalla-GrÃmur and is described as big and strong as a man and skilled in magical arts.
One day in winter time when Egill was 11 years old Skalla-GrÃmur was playing a ball-game at Borg with Egill and his friend, Þórður Granason. At first the boys were winning but later on in the evening Skalla-GrÃmur got really strong and and grabbed Þórður and tossed him onto the ground with such force that Þórður died. He then went after his own son, Egill. Þorgerður Brák was watching the game and said: "Hamask þú nú, Skalla-GrÃmr, at syni þÃnum", yes, she said that ;) It roughly translated means if Skalla-GrÃmur is now going to attack his own son. Skalla-GrÃmur got so angry that he let loose Egill and tried to grab Þorgerður Brák, but she ran and he chased her down to the ocean where she jumped from a cliff into the ocean trying to reach the island outside of Borgarnes, now called Brákarey island. Skalla-GrÃmur threw a big rock at her with such great force that Þorgerður Brák didn't resurface. Since that time the strait where she drowned is called Brákarsund - Brákar strait.

Finally a good setup for severe weather and were were on time for the event. Shortly after 4pm CDT were in the Moderate Risk area for that afternoon. Arapahoe Nebraska was our destination. Traveled a few miles south to get the best open position before the storms. Pointing the cameras due southwest, this is were they were to develop and become severe.
Towers were already forming and were were under the first cells of the day. These would become the tornadic cells just north of Alma Nebraska that late afternoon.
Shortly after 5pm we had our first encounter with severe weather. Storm just went severe and we could see clear rotation on the southwest side of the base of this storm.

The black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis) is a medium-sized crane in Asia that breeds on the Tibetan Plateau and remote parts of India and Bhutan. They are globally vulnerable and the estimated global population is between 8800 and 11000 individuals. These birds are legally protected in China, India and Bhutan.
Phobjikha valley in Bhutan, where the cranes visit in winter, is one of the last strongholds of the threatened Black-necked Crane. The species was only discovered in 1876 due to its remote alpine range. Grazing, agriculture, and hydroelectricity have all taken a toll on the high-altitude wetlands that the birds depend on, and climate change may further alter their habitat.
My latest acquisition! I subscribe to the Atlas Obscura newsletter and one day read about this innovative tape measure from Le Corbusier, the master of modern architecture. I had never heard of this Modulor Rule before and found the article to be a very interesting read. And when it mentioned that Princeton Architectural Press and Fondation Le Corbusier had created a facsimile edition of the Modulor Rule I awaited it’s release in September this year and got my very own copy. About my Corner of Curiosities: A few years ago I bought a little box with drawers, thinking I would collect a few special bits and pieces in there. I parked this little set on top of my IKEA chest of six drawers which stands in a corner of my apartment. In time, I added more small shelfs, drawers and boxes and began to put curious items on display in all the little nooks and crannies. Quirky little things I mostly find on flea markets, but also get off the net. This corner of my home serves as inpiration, and every once in I while I walk up the IKEA dresser, put my elbows on top and rest my chin in my hands while I let my eyes wander through all these curious things. Moments such as these give spark my imagination and spurs my motivation to doodle in my journals. The collection is’nt all that special, as it’s not very easy finding fairly cheap, quirky and curious things, small enough to fit in the corner. My collection is constantly changing, if I find a new collectible, something else has to go or be moved around - as the corner now more or less is full.
Anywho, I thought I’d dedicate a photo album to this Corner of Curiosities, here on Flickr - probably for no other purpose than to tickle my own imagination :)

Snow has fallen over night here and all I want to do is go out with the camera, but I have a deadline looming for a magazine article so I have to be disciplined and stay chained to my desk and dream of what might have been.
So here is an image I made up in the Yorkshire Dales last week. Mid October... 2023
Final Chase Day at hand for 2023....
Warm and with SPC Active warnings that afternoon of severe weather. Stayed in the South Central Nebraska Hwy 6 Neighborhood.
Some wicked good, or should I say fantastic views of the out waves of moisture to mix in with spookiness of October. Late season supercells along the dryline were forming & I had to get underneath! You know for the view that are contained within! Oh I got my share that day.
Not to spoil the fun... No Tornado that day.. or at least I didn't see it. Came over the 2 way that the was one on the ground exactly where my cameras was pointed... however bad positing on my part. If it was there I didn't physically see it. It doesn't mean it wasn't there...
The active warning for the Tornado didn't fire off on my alarm till I was already due east of Minden Nebraska. Didn't have the best plan for attack here. I knew it was coming but where I deiced to park wasn't the best viewing position. When that alarm goes off & didn't have the best road network to navigate though the city or around the city of Minden. So I decide to stay put since it was already heading my way.
Sometimes this is a good decision, that day it wasn't. I had played this day out a little to shy & got caught with just an outflow dominate storm that afternoon after the Tornado Warning.
It was a Fun way to end the 2023 Chase Season... Can't Wait for 2024!

Sumur is a quiet, peaceful and lesser known hamlet in the Nubra valley of the Ladakh region of the Trans Himalayan mountain range. The picturesque village as a distance of 110 Km from Leh and one needs to cross the difficult Khardung La ( 17582 ft ) to be there.
