A wicked bad day of severe weather in South Central Nebraska. For more information on that day... NWS Official Report.

A tornadic supercell with an Ef1 or Ef2 tornado struck the city of Kearney late afternoon. The aftermath wasn't pretty. I sure wanted to be out chasing but I was scheduled for work, and missed the entire historic event.

Power was out, but I did have the camera batteries charged. Geared up, with camera in hand after I got home from work. I took a few minutes during clean up that night to capture these incredible cloudscapes that were on the back side of the storms.

These were the final rays, the last light of the day. These clouds were truly some spectacular stormscape captures to end that day of severe weather!

Late May ... 2024

A massive storm cloud dominates the sky over a lush green field, with the golden light of the setting sun illuminating the horizon. The dynamic colors and dramatic contrasts create a sense of awe and impending weather.

Some good photo ops, as I was driving south. Tornado Warning now on the cell just to the east. Had to get to the Hwy 15 / Hwy 41 Junction to watch the wall cloud move just to the west of Wilber Nebraska.

A few of these might be a little blurry, though structure was wanted to show here. It was my only Tor Warned storm all day, as I was now close to 13 hours on my chase day. I was getting tired and I wasn't about to chase a tornado in the dark, so to get close and witness what I could as there was no light left. 1"-2" Hail now was pounding my windshield and it would only get worse. Though I rolled down the window and shot these final shots...

Final Day shots that is...

This shy little butterfly among wildflowers on the forest floor. Fortunately, it stayed on this flower just long enough for me to get a shot with the camera nearly on the ground. The photo was taken in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon.

It has been a slow start to severe weather season here in Nebraska 2014. June starts with Thunderstorms... Severe....

Were just north of Kearney that evening & they were moving directly on a eastern path. Northern Buffalo County in South Central Nebraska was the target area that evening.

Winds were ferocious, but it was warm & humid evening as the storm was raging just a miles due north of my location. Lightning was illuminating the night with frequent flashes within this storm.

Lower level lower wind clouds (scud clouds) were frequent. Was hard to watch the base of this storm with all of them blanketing the bottom of this storm.

Its been a few weeks of no storms in south central Nebraska, we decided to head west for a fun filled afternoon of severe weather! A moderate risk day with PDS warnings on the supercells that were were chasing that afternoon.

We knew where we wanted to chase and had planned it out perfectly. From Kearney to Scottsbluff NE. From Scottsbluff to Torrington Wy, and then Hwy 85 South. We ended up parked right under a 4g cell tower, close to the Hwy 85 & junction 216 with time to spare. Perfect position, perfect light, and we had perfect cell signal to stream this event live.

The DOW truck parked about a hundred yards in front of us and other chasers were now homing in on this storm. As we observed this rotation...this was just a tease, as this funnel would actually dissipate, but we wouldn't have to wait for long for the real thing.

Proud to say that this was my first time that my video stream was on the Weather Channel via StormViewLive.com and these were the photos that coincided with that day... The video is to long to post to Flickr, but it can be viewed via this link. goo.gl/m65rN4,

(This next video is NOT my video but via youtube user "The Weather Nutz" of this same storm but from the opposite view of mine... excellent video youtu.be/7dP6PI1zV5Q)

A vast landscape is dominated by swirling, ominous clouds hinting at an approaching storm. The darkened sky contrasts with the subtle light of the horizon, casting a moody atmosphere over the open fields. Sparse vegetation on the gentle hills adds to the stark beauty of the scene.

Storm system was east of Kearney Nebraska. NWS predicted that we would not have any development but when there is a chance... lol

I went out for a bit as the first waves of storms hit south central Nebraska. This sunset illuminated the brewing clouds above.

On the open plains of Nebraska...

August was a GEM month for severe storm structure. Folks... I didn't miss a beat.

Pure Eye Candy this one is. Open air supercells developing right as the dry line passed over us in South Central Nebraska.

I wasn't going to get underneath this one though it was close. I could have chased it, but I wanted to get the structure that day. Oh I got what I came for!

I had planned accordingly. Knowing that the storm was going to pass as it rapidly developed to the due east. I waited for bit under the hail core before I got into position to capture this storm.

Building Billowing Beautiful updrafts on the back side of this storm were memorizing. Perfect Supercell structure.

From a couple of weeks ago while shooting the aurora at the Hoodoos in Drumheller.

We did actually get some killer shots of aurora behind the hoodoos but because we were down in a valley the best of the light show was mostly obscured.

So I decided to totally paste in the sky from a shot I took about an hour earlier along the roadside. It was pretty easy to blend these two exposures to make this composite.

If you'd like to watch a video tutorial showing exactly how I did this, along with my theory and thought process, please hop over to my blog www.fototripper.com/newsletter/ and subscribe to my mailing list.
