I came in like a wrecking ball

Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung

Left me crashing in a blazing fall

All you ever did was wreck me

Yeah, you, you wreck me

We recently subscribed to a delivery service selling so-called “ugly fruit”—the idea being that the fruit and veggies that failed their auditions for the supermarket shelves were actually perfectly good enough to eat and didn’t deserve being thrown away. Today, we got out first delivery—including the magnificent Purple Pimpernel, the one and only Monsieur Aubergine.

Yeah, he’s taken a few knocks on that ol’ roundabout we call life, but hey—here’s character earned the hard way. Mr Aubergine ain’t no mean mistreater—you unnerstand—but he’s seen the kind of life you don’t see on the cover of Veggie Vogue.

That’s right. Mr Aubergine calls it like he sees it.

(That said, he needs four speedlights, a lightbox, no shortage of PVC and a few beers to do so.)

Waiting...

Due to the El Niño (The Super El Niño that is forming in the Pacific) is going to hinder the storm development this year here in Nebraska.

I'll be honest. Our weather pattern here is not favorable for development of severe weather in 2023. June usually comes in with a boom. Simply it hasn't. 30 Day models right now have all the storms north & south of Nebraska. It is the Omega Bubble effect & Nebraska is Bullseye for 2023. So I'm gonna take what I can get.

I have been ailing a really bad back injury from years past. Hindered my chasing in mid to late May. Was unable to do so because I simply couldn't get into my truck.

Feeling better the first part of June I pulled out the cams out in front of the homestead & captured this nice early June storm here in south central Nebraska. Severe Warned but that was about it. Had some small hail & much need rain.

I enjoyed getting out & back on the Hunt!

Emerald Skies, Henningsvær, Lofoten, Norway

One of the simple pleasures of being home for more than a fleeting moment is finally having the time to revisit the countless folders of images gathered over recent travels. Every now and then, a frame stands out, not just for how it looks, but for how it felt. This is one of those moments.

On my final evening in Norway this past February, I was unwinding in the bath at the beautiful Henningsvær Bryggehotell hotel when, just after 11pm, my phone lit up with an aurora alert. Within seconds, relaxation turned to urgency and I was out, dressed, and heading into the Arctic night, joined by my co-workshop leader Chris Frost.

What followed was 45 minutes of pure magic.

The sky erupted into ribbons of emerald light, dancing and shifting above us. We found ourselves alternating between laughter, disbelief, and complete silence, standing there, open mouthed beneath it all. No matter how many times I witness the aurora, it never loses its impact. Even now, it captivates me just as deeply as it did during my very first encounter in Iceland back in January 2016.

It remains, without question, one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles you can ever experience.

And for those joining us on our February 2027 Lofoten photo tour, should the skies decide to perform like this, you’ll carry that moment with you forever too.

In September, Nebraska’s sunsets transform into breathtaking spectacles, amplified by the dramatic presence of thunderstorms and supercells. As summer’s heat begins to wane, the Great Plains remain a hotbed for dynamic weather, with warm, moist air clashing against cooler fronts to create vibrant, fiery skies. The sun dips below the horizon, painting the vast Nebraska landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple, often intensified by towering cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds, illuminated by the fading light, glow with an ethereal quality, their edges tinged with gold as the sun’s rays refract through the atmosphere. The open plains offer an unobstructed view, making the interplay of light and storm clouds a daily masterpiece, where the sinking sun seems to set the sky ablaze against the silhouette of distant fields.

For those in rural areas, watching a September supercell at sunset is an unforgettable experience. The air grows heavy with the scent of rain, and the distant rumble of thunder provides a soundtrack to the visual spectacle. Farmers and storm chasers alike pause to witness the sky’s drama, knowing that these storms can bring both vital rain and potential destruction to the region’s corn and soybean fields. The fleeting moments when the sun’s last rays pierce through breaks in the storm clouds create a sense of timelessness, connecting the observer to the raw, untamed spirit of the Plains. In Nebraska, September sunsets paired with thunderstorms and supercells are not just weather events—they’re a vivid reminder of nature’s ability to inspire wonder and respect in equal measure.

After a month into an extended four to five month cross-country overlanding adventure to do photography, I camped for a night in Oregon near the Idaho border. This is public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It was a short distance away from Homedale, Idaho, where I was going to visit relatives the next day. The day time temperature was in the low 90s and the overnight low temperature was 65 in early July.

Per Wikipedia, "The Owyhee Mountains are a mountain range in Owyhee County, Idaho and Malheur County, Oregon. Mahogany Mountain and the associated volcanic craters of the Lake Owyhee volcanic field are in the Owyhee Mountains of Oregon just east of the Owyhee Reservoir on the Owyhee River."
