I was actually at the Grimsby Lawn Bowling Club, which is immediately adjacent to the Grimsby Tennis Club, when I noticed some of the activity on the tennis courts and decided to saunter over and see what was happening on the courts. As I stood there, in addition to the expected activity on the courts, I spotted this young man relaxing just off the end of one court clearly intensely concentrating on the on-court action, no doubt studying the other players with the intention of learning from the best. The score? Something-or-other to love. - JW

Taken using a hand-held (resting on stone wall, actually) Olympus OM-D EM-5 fitted with an adapted 4/3 lense, Olympus Zuiko 40-150mm 1:4.0-5.6 lens set to 150mm, Program Exposure mode, Auto WB, Matrix metering, ISO200 (Auto ISO), f/5.6, 1/250 sec with an EV-0.30 exposure bias . PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Olympus RAW/ORF source image: set final image size to be 8000px wide, crop to a 3:2 format, apply Tone Mapping at default levels, brighten image overall by setting Exposure Compensation to EV+0.98, use Shadows/Highlights to bring up Shadows a bit and bring out hair and backpack details a bit better, slightly boost Contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, slightly increase Vibrance, apply a little noise reduction, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the Levels tool in Auto mode to set a good base tonality and colour balance, sharpen very slightly, save, scale image to 6000px wide, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 wide for posting online, save.

"Lava Study I"
An incredible night in Oct '09 out on the lava field on the Big Island. Truly powerful experience. The scale isn't apparent here but the rock here is about 20' tall. Full sensory overload photographing here.
It's hard to get a feeling for what it was like there. Standing on the edge of the bench. Waves crashing up against the new land. Sounds of the lava and ocean. Smell of the air. And then wondering if the land that you're standing on is going to collapse in to the ocean at any point or the wind is going to change and blow the toxic plume toward us. Yikes!

An old picture from, I think, when I was studying for my oral exams. The life of a grad student certainly is glamorous.
While 536' is the actual height of the US Bancorp Tower aka The Big Pink there are many factors other than distance that affect how tall it appears in a photograph. From left to right in the sequence above the camera moves closer to the building, but its apparent height changes due to focal length, perspective, and proximity to foreground objects. Old eroded blue iceberg against a cloudy blue sky provides some visually interesting textures. The iceberg became grounded in Cuckold Cove near Trinity, Newfoundland on its journey down Iceberg Alley from Baffin Bay on the west coast of Greenland.

... on the third floor of Casa Grande was completed in 1931.
This room was William Randolph Hearst's private study and work space.
The archways are actually concrete. They have been painted with murals by Camille Solon to look “sort-of-gothic”. This in keeping with Hearst's love of the "old European things" look.
Like many of the other rooms, it is quite beautiful.
