After a quick pit stop for gas, we returned to our original storm which looked fantastic when viewed from the southwest. Bolt blue sky with rock hard cloud towers over open prairie. The wall cloud has lifted a little bit and is no longer a ground scraper, but by any measure this is a beautiful specimen of an Alberta supercell.

A couple of old cars found in Eastern Oregon. My brother tells me they look like Chryslers but I couldn't tell you.
The storm front "Xavier" has uprooted many trees in our region. Several trees that were over 200 years old could not withstand the power of this storm that swept across Northern Germany for just an hour.
So sad to see the fallen giant. Taken the paving stones and lawn with it in the moment of toppling down.

The sky was looking impressively threatening earlier, so I went in to a nearby farmer's field (where there's a public right of way) armed with the camera. Thunder rumbled in the distance and the sky went darker still.
Shortly after taking this shot I had to make a run for it as the rain came hammering down.
Forest trees stand in sunlight while distant ridges are darkened by the clouds of an approaching Sierra storm.
At first look this might just seem like a photograph of a row of trees. It is late in the day, and the warm light lends color to this section of forest at Tuolumne Meadows, and it looks like a pleasant early evening. But that bluish strip at the top of the frame tells a different story. If you look closely you can make out a peak, and the peak is backed by higher peaks that are partially obscured by the dark clouds of an incoming rain storm.
We hear all the time that photography is about light, and there’s truth to that claim. (I would hold that it isn’t “just” about light, but whatever else it may be about usually benefits from wonderful light.) One of my favorite situations is this sort — something nearby in lovely, warm light, but in the background a darker and more dramatic effect.

It was such a strange segment in time when it went from dark skies and wind-whipped pouring rain to a blue sky dome surrounded by a stadium of menacing clouds with no wind at all. Then as the clouds moved back in from the Southwest, the wind whipped up even harder and the rain began again.

Another weekend, another named storm. Compared with last week the winds are not as strong but it's much wetter and there's flooding in places.

The storm that never was. This was a very, very slow moving cell that we waited for what seemed like forever - only to have it peter out before it reached us.
Major storms this morning in the Mid-west, USA. I managed to grab a few cloud shots when the rain subsided.

The sure dripping and splashing and running
fills up my tired mind with it's own thoughts, in a way.
Then I don't need to think my own.
I've returned from the cabin, and it seems like I've got a few nice photos from there, but first, how about a nice rainbow shot that I took from our deck last week.
