Two days after Christmas, a fierce late afternoon storm moves over the southern suburbs of Sydney, seen in this panoramic view stitched from 10 portrait-mode images.
A big hail storm hit us this afternoon. Our canvas Gazebo canopy is now riddled with holes. Luckily cars were in the carport, garden still intact. Chelsea sat close our friend who was visiting, then when it was over started eating the ice.
Storm from the southeast (right) moves along the coastal horizon on the Pacific leaving the rising sun to peek through gaps. Rain to reach the Gold Coast later.
unlike here in the Twin Ports when they say a storm is coming in North Dakota, they are pretty impressive. we caught this one near Buxton, ND just after the alert for Tornadoes popped up on our phones
the local storm bird (eastern koel) returned to town a couple of weeks ago, and not long afterwards Brisbane saw its first decent storm of the season.
Storm birds are big noisy cuckoos that migrate from New Guinea to Queensland to breed -- their arrival also coincides with storm season every year, hence the nickname. It's lovely though, to hear the storm bird calling and see the purple clouds of jacaranda blossom shifting in the wind as a big black storm front like this one rolls in....
Because I stopped to take pictures of this awesome cloud before going into Meijer, I got wet. I think it was worth it.

I know that storm petrels are never popular but I wanted to upload this as an interesting "birders' bird". It is a Least Storm Petrel (Hydrobates microsoma), which is the smallest member of the petrel family on the planet and even smaller than the tiny Storm Petrel we get in Britain. Least Storm Petrel only breeds in islands off the Baja peninsula, mainly off the east side in the Sea of Cortez, though they wander more widely outside the breeding season. Within their restricted area they are not easy to see, and near impossible to photograph. Although I have visited this area several times I only occasionally see Least Storm Petrel, and this is the first time I have ever managed to get a recognisable photograph of one. In the Sea of Cortez they seem to be massively outnumbered by the larger Black Storm Petrel (H. melania). Apart from being smaller, Least Storm Petrel has a diagnostic wedge-shaped tail, which is very different from the deeply forked tail of Black Storm Petrel.

I took this photograph in the paddock at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998. Its a 1994 Lister Storm, one of only four road-going examples that were produced between 1994 and 1995, although racing versions of the car were built, the GTS, GTL and GT taking part in the FIA's GT Championship racing from 1995 to 2005. The Lister Storm was powered by a 6,996cc V12 engine that was based on the one used by the Jaguar XJR-9.
