You could say I have a slight obsession with storms and lightning and indeed it is one of the reasons I started taking photographs. However, in the 10 years that I have been into photography, this is only the second photo of lightning that I have captured which has any kind of aesthetic quality. I actually didn't realise that I had caught this strike until I looked through my files on the computer this morning. I guess I must have blinked and missed it at the time :-)
The sun was trying so hard to break through the storm clouds as I was leaving Phipps Conservatory last week. I had a 50mm on my camera, but at least I got back far enough to catch one of the side domes.
Dark skies suddenly enveloped the Sheboygan riverfront Saturday afternoon. It amazed me how quickly the charter fishing boats returned to dock.
The central valley of California is pretty darn flat; enough to evoke the prairies of middle Canada. This was an evening storm blowing in from the coast; brief, intense, cold, and windy.
We've been having pretty fierce weather, foretelling what's to come.
Thanks to those of you who've offered good wishes...keep 'em coming please
We've been busy preparing as best we can. After nearly losing our house in a hurricane once before, we have an idea of what to expect.
I'm worried about our furry sons. They had a rough start in life and are both very anxious most of the time. If we have to evacuate, I'm not sure where we can go with 2 cats. I might just have to keep on driving, lol!
This is only the first bad storm of the season. There will be a few more, I'm sure. There's no relaxing until November. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'll try to drop by when I can, but it's possible that I won't be able to be here once the storm hits. I have a few portable chargers for our phones, but mine is old and doesn't hold a charge long. So, I'll be conserving it, not going online, etc.
Take care,
L 😄
There’s been a LOT of rain here this year, but it does at least give some interesting skies, and the wildflowers are enjoying it. This is a view from a recent walk near Helmsley, North Yorkshire - we just got back to the car before the rain arrived! Watercolour on cold-pressed paper, 14x10".
There was some really nice stormclouds over the Irish sea yesterday evening. I spotted them out of my kitchen window so I dashed out to try and capture a few shots. By the time I got to take this, the cloud had passed by on its way to South West Scotland which you can just see on the horizon.

It's been a never-ending winter here in the Rocky Mountain Trench this year and, even though it's mid-April, the snow is still coming! Massive dark clouds moved across our valley, piling up against the white peaks of the Steeples and unloading yet another round of fresh snow. The sun came out for a little while and then howling winds brought another round of squalls, repeating throughout the day.
I happened upon a bolt of lightning or two that night. Shot handheld and with a decent amount of luck.
