My favorite stomping ground, Heather Farm, used to be a preserve and abounded with all manner of wildlife from 16 species of birds to my annual otter family. My wife and I were walking under a group of oaks, and there was a squawk. We looked up and there was a Cooper's chick that was perhaps a month old. And then we spotted the nest at the top of a tree, unphotographable, but we could see movement. An hour later, there were two chicks on separate branches. And that became our daily ritual for almost a month until they took off (in opposite directions - Cooper's are highly territorial). But on this day, when they were truly fledglings (juveniles), we got both vying for food from their parent(s), and obviously doing very well. A week or so later, when they were trying out their wings, we had one "crash land" in a bush no more than 10 feet from me, and another landed on a railing close enough to pet him if I wanted to and I didn't. It was a summer to remember.

The one fact that "spoiled" the experience is finding out that Cooper's mortality in their first year is 80%! These hawks hunt in forests and fly between branches and high speeds. (Squirrels are preferred.) We came back at the same time the following year, but no Cooper's were present, "only" Red-shouldered hawks which nest much higher up, but as adults present themselves beautifully.

On a positive note, Cooper's hawks (aka as when I was a kid, "chicken hawk") live 12 years in the wild. The longest lived Cooper's (tagged) was 20 years old!
