We drove up to Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge and didn’t have very high expectations. This being the end of Summer, most wildlife has flown to greener pastures. As we were driving through the auto tour, we spotted this young deer with its mother. They were enjoying the sun and munching on the vegetation. The youngster watched us for a minute then started stomping its hooves as though to scare us off.

The African elephant is not just the largest living land animal but it has an enormous brain size to match. Their brains can weigh up to a whopping 5.4kg and are, without doubt, the largest brain of all animals living on land.

After the excitement of the morning it would have been all too easy to sit here on our balcony and fall asleep in front of the scenery. I was up at 5:30 for the sunrise as we sailed in, and a few short hours later we were on the skylift, riding up into the mountains that loomed like ghostly white giants over the fjord. Breakfast before eight is unheard of at home, but today we were filling up at the buffet before most of the other passengers showed any signs of life. By two thirty we were back from the mountains, and having finished a leisurely lunch, were quietly contemplating the rest of the afternoon. It was too late to go to the Briksdal Glacier - the afternoon bus had departed some time ago - but there was still the promise of the evening cruise out of the fjord towards the sea to look forward to. The morning had already been filled with sights the likes of which we’d never witnessed before, and by now we were feeling happy but tired. But an idea was playing on my mind. When would we be here again? Hopefully one day, but possibly never. It would only nag at me for the rest of time if the opportunity was missed when we were so close, and on such a lovely spring day as well. So on went the boots. There were three hours to go before Aurora was due to leave port and start heading west along the fjord. Just enough time for a stomp.
The walk was roughly two miles each way, and although the legs were still weary from yesterday at Haugesund, this was another easy walk on more or less level terrain past the edge of the village and its tourist shops, huge rails bursting with winter coats and Norwegian flag hoodies outside the front doors. From here we carried on through a gorgeous pastoral valley, past fine wooden houses with neatly tended gardens on spacious plots, and a handsome Lutheran Church, heading in the direction of the distant glacier. Some of the walking would be along the edge of the tarmac, but this was a quiet country road where you could see the traffic coming from half a mile away. So splendidly rural, full of open green space and pure mountain air. We wouldn’t reach the glacier, but on the map I’d spotted a river with a wooden bridge across it, backed by those shimmering white mountains in the afternoon sunshine. It looked like the kind of spot where we could enjoy this peaceful Scandinavian idyll for a while, and maybe I’d get a picture as well. Online maps are wonderful research tools for places like this. Thirty years ago you'd be taking your chances, with no idea whether you might be arriving at an eight feet high concrete wall blocking the view, but in the digital age you can very often get a good insight into what to expect in exchange for the effort you put into your four mile stomp.
Any here it was, the bridge exactly as the pictures had shown it, a wide area of shallow rapids rushing beneath us. A bench to sit and take it all in for a while. But when you’re cruising, there’s always one eye on the clock and you don’t want to be wheezing red faced up the gangplank at twenty-nine minutes past five as the crew wait to haul it back aboard behind you. Thus began the process of setting up the tripod, and the only option seemed to be to do so on the bridge itself. At which point the land train pulled up and disgorged seven tourists from its carriages. The tripod was only rarely used during the cruise, because let’s face it, there doesn’t seem to be much point when you’re on a moving ship. While earlier today up on the mountain; strong winds and a light travel tripod? Not happening is it? And now, as I finally found a use for it, a herd of sightseers poured around us, pulling out their camera phones and clacketing over the wooden boards like a septuagenarian dance troupe, just as I'd lined up a one second exposure. It was difficult enough with the strong light glaring across the water without the original members of Pan’s People (ask your dad - he was a big fan) rehearsing the steps to “Riverdance” on the bridge right beside me. I could almost see the tripod bouncing around as I tried to look at the screen. The trouble is, you can’t really explain this to people who only take pictures with their phones, because they don’t understand. And even if you try to, it only makes you sound like a miserable old curmudgeon. Ali sat on the bench, grinning silently at the miserable old curmudgeon. It’s almost as if she can see the inside of my brain at times.
I wasn’t overly keen on the shot anyway. Too many messy looking rocks and not enough water in the river for my liking. There was a second bridge a couple of hundred yards further along the road, so I stomped a little bit further. Fortunately none of the dancers followed me. And even though I did have other options from my new vantage point, the best view was from the bridge itself, offering a much cleaner composition along the white wisps of water in the foreground towards Lake Floen. It was a narrow road crossing, and both the tripod and I had to breathe in deeply to allow the one car that used it to pass, but that was far less traumatic than the invasion by seven pairs of boots and walking poles a few minutes earlier. Here at least I could concentrate on the shot, which I composed very quickly and then repeated several times over for luck, after which it was time to collect Ali from her bench in the middle of the dancing bridge and commence the long stomp back to Olden in time to avoid being the last ones back on board.

My ball never gets away from me now. Last winter I lost (we found one of them again in the spring) two of these orange street-hockey balls in deep snow; this year, none yet.

While visiting family in northern Alabama over the Christmas holiday, I was able to take some time to visit a few of my old railfan haunts. Here we see CSX train Q521 crossing over the Tennessee River at Decatur, AL on December 27, 2020. This long train can still be seen on the other side of the river, about a mile away. The River Junction control point is dispatched by Norfolk Southern; CSX trains have to request a signal from the NS dispatcher in order to cross the single track lift bridge.

I like running in the fall. It means cooler temps. It means rain. It means mud. And it means splashing along the trail. All things your mom told you not to do as a kid.
