These are the steps from the house of Pontius Pilate, brought from Jerusalem to Rome by St. Helena, Mother of Constantine the Great. This has been a pilgrimage site for centuries. In the middle ages, it was believed that by climbing these stairs on your knees, one could free a loved one from Purgatory. The tradition of "Praying the Stairs" (saying an "Our Father" on each step, while on your knees) still continues today. The original stairs are made of marble, but wooden coverings have been laid on top to protect the ancient stone from wear. I too, took this pilgrimage.
