These are the steps from the house of Pontius Pilate, brought from Jerusalem to Rome by St. Helena, Mother of Constantine the Great. This has been a pilgrimage site for centuries. In the middle ages, it was believed that by climbing these stairs on your knees, one could free a loved one from Purgatory. The tradition of "Praying the Stairs" (saying an "Our Father" on each step, while on your knees) still continues today. The original stairs are made of marble, but wooden coverings have been laid on top to protect the ancient stone from wear. I too, took this pilgrimage.

We visited a youth campsite at Crosslands in January. Great place for nature-tripping, the shrubberies and trees are lush. The main hall was located at the top of this concrete steps and I had to climb this several times during the day for one reason or another most of the time lugging my camera bag. Towards the end I was so exhausted all I could do was stare up these steps willing myself to make that one more trek.
