Great Central gala day

Today was a special traction engine fair at Whipsnade Zoo!

I like this picture: it's not one of the most detailed in this mystery set but there's a boyish sense of movement to it as my great Uncle tried to capture the engine.

This is one of several steam engine photographs taken by my great uncle Garnet Cross, whose father was an engine driver for Southern Railway. All the photos in this set were taken around the Southern Region, post-WW2 but perhaps some before it.

I thought this one may have been taken in East Anglia when my father was vicar at Guyhirn, but flickr member loose_grip_99 has very kindly put me right on this and several other shots in this set, so my thanks to him and as a result I've unearthed another aspect of my family's history I was unaware of.

This old farm steam engine body, in a field close by the the coastal path is slowly disintegrating and since I visited last it has lost its its back which creates a window through to the secenery behind. I'm very fond of this this rusty relic and make a point of taking photos of it from time to time.

There's a steam engine that goes through Chelsea, QC. I was able to get a few shots of it while staying at a friends house. Exposure was quite difficult, given the very bright sky and dark shadows.
