Steam engine, this was moving round a small display ring / area...
OK - I can see it's a steam engine, but it has no cab and no steering so, despite being on wheels, it appears it was towed, and not driven, from place to place - the tow bar is clearly seen in the other photo. It has these odd fixtures which don't make sense to me. The thing is as big as a small traction engine (as you can guess from my brother standing beside it). The wheel indicates it was made by Marshall Sons & Co, Gainsborough.
This is a museum piece, started up a few times a year for the general public to see it working . I took the shot at very low shutter speed. The contrast between the blurry moving parts and the sharp static parts I find interesting
This Case boiler runs the steam piston in the "newer" photo. Here the operator is feeding the fire in the boiler.
Train was hauled by Steam Locomotives 44871 and 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier - both Stanier Black Five Class 5MT 4-6-0.
