The majority of the work in this portfolio consists of a two week project I am currently working on which stems from the idea of reproduction and repetition explored in my 56 Davids piece, where I photocopied a photocopy of a photocopy until it was reduced to a blank piece of paper. It is based on the idea that reproduction isn’t replication, but rather an alteration of the original, and that the process of reproducing something over and over again results in a final outcome with none of the meaning or concept of the original. The blank piece of paper as an isolated piece has no meaning at all. This generated ideas for my project on the reduction of words and concepts, in particular, silence. So far I have made electronic instruments, time based installations and performative works in the short space of time allocated for this brief project.
I’m interested in working with office machinery, especially printers and photocopiers, because of their primary function to complete the impossible task of replication. My experimentation with building a synthesizer that worked by translating light data from the environment it is placed in led to me working with sound and the concept of silence or lack of. The book Silence by Toby Kamps and the visual art of John Cage has helped me in visualising a concept which is based within sound and directing it into performative and installation works.

Note-Grids are a tool for collecting and connecting objects of thought (in this case, words).
They treat words and other manifestations of thought as objects that can be freely manipulated to create new meaning.
They break meaning up into individual words to facilitate a more fluid, intuitive, and improvisational approach to knowledge production.
