An Artist´s Statement

In my work of art I address the problems society suffers from the most, but shows most resilience to resolve. The modern religious benevolent despotism, the narrow-mindedness of ideologies, the conflicts it results in, and their reluctance to acknowledge obvious problems like the global warming. Consequently the religion´s and ideologists intentional and unintentional oppression of mankind. I argue for the recognition of a correlation between moral theory and science. Which is describe in my work of art through contrasting moods, mediums and expressions, displaying the imbalance in nature and society. I isolate conditions, highlights them with symbolism, in a portrayal of an objective commitment against distorted ideologies.
The arts have always had a close relationship to philosophy. In my work of art I argue for the acknowledgement of the correlation between normative ethics, metaethics and science as a foundation for tomorrow´s society. A society in which art bears a responsibility, through its pioneering, to set an agenda for tomorrow. Art should explore itself, by formulating the ideas of society.
According to me, art is an Utopia, equivalent of freedom. The liberty of art, its rejection of diminishing rules, makes art trans scientific, with the capacity of moving through the layers of society. The ultimate free medium of expression, through which I can declare my thesis of objective naturalistic moral realism. In attending a higher education in fine art, I aim to develop my theses and explore new ways of expressing them.

The Barunga Statement called for Indigenous rights and was presented to Prime Minister Bob Hawke in 1988. It is now displayed in Parliament House, Canberra.
Inspired by the instillation artwork of Joanna Rucklidge, and how she uses her artwork and public space to make social-political / political statements, I decided to design a bin using posca pens to highlight the issue of littering in my area of Derby; littering is harmful to all wildlife and the environment, and during my time in the area there were multiple examples of littering scattered throughout the tunnel, in the car park and within the minimal nature remaining in the area, etc. Because of this, I wanted to create an instillation that would make the public stop and think about their actions. To communicate this message directly I decided to decorate a simple black bin with the phrase “USE ME!” on it, to remind the public the basics of what a bin is for. However, as I was unsure as to who littered, I didn’t know whether they could speak English or not (and I wanted to ensure my message was communicated to all) so I decided to translate my message of “USE ME!” into the languages of: French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Romanian and Italian as these are the most popular spoken languages.
After mocking up different bin designs, where I experimented with colour, type face and decoration I decided on keeping the words handwritten and in white, to contrast the black background of the bin. The handwritten white penned words on the (black) bin reminded me of old-fashioned blackboards used in schools. Because of this, I played on the idea of “correct and wrong ‘answers’”, with the ‘answers’ representing the actions of the people, and decorated the bin in brightly coloured ticks and crosses. To emphasise this concept I also decided to add question marks and explanation marks to make the statement more prominent by asking the public: are you going to do the right thing with your litter and bin it, or are you going to harm the environment. I decided to decorate my bin with bright colours (of the ticks and crosses) to break up the white text and to add more dimension and narrative to my work.
Furthermore, I decided to develop this instillation by adding litter inside and scattered around the bin to further ask the public: are you going to do the right thing?
After researching my area thoroughly, I believe that the graffiti and vandalism within the place reasons why some members of the public have decided to litter: the vandalism causes the place to look scruffy, which in turn probably makes people question why they should continue to look after the area when it has already been ruined; I decided to add my collages (which encapsulate the feelings and features of my area) into the background of my instillation to further emphasise this idea. I hope this instillation makes the public think more about their actions, and evokes change in this area of Derby.

Undesirable subject matter is desirable within my art work, I like to take my techniques and concepts in harmony and enjoy manipulating my audience’s emotions when viewing my art work. Starting Part 2 of my Foundation Art Diploma, I am taking the theme ‘Belief’; mixing my love of art and past A level Health and Social Care, I am looking at the concept of children and how they are not fully socialised humans, how their beliefs of all sorts of imagination is the state fact of their ‘blank slate’.
Chiaroscuro is a technique I am researching and refining in my practise, taking different surfaces I am developing my understanding of oil and acrylic paint and producing a series of experiments. I am excited that I am looking at this concept of Belief within children and also the renaissance vibe of Romanisation with Chiaroscuro, the sugar-coated paintings and the belief of hierarchy has more than meets the eye. Chiaroscuro is not the only technique I am looking at but I am also a lover of broken colour, bringing out the undertones of skin and suggesting emotions with a based tone of cold or warm colours is important within my work. I don’t want just the image to give emotion, but the brush strokes and colour is just as important; I am looking at contrast and differences in a piece of art, for example taking a subject of sadness and anger and using warm tones to deceive and let the audience take what they real see and allow them to undercover how the painting feels to them. With this Part I am looking at making my own canvas’ taking workshops and building my knowledge by the end of part 2 I want to be experienced in making my own canvas’ for large scale pieces of art I would like to develop into.
For the future I want to be a freelance artist and an art therapist, connecting with my audience and the pupil in general is important not just for my art work but for me as a person. I enjoy volunteering and I would like to take my love of art and help people in a therapeutic way with their needs, for example dementia, psychotic levels (mental health) and learning difficulties. For my future of art I would like to take this concept as well and help people and them to understand their emotions whilst viewing my artwork.
