ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Industry & Beauty
-I take my inspiration from the industrial landscape, considering the will of humanity upon it and the myriad changes it brings. I reflect on how technologies considered innovative devalue with time and become artefacts of the past.
-Both artists and viewers are influenced by modern lifestyle, mentality, aesthetics and the language of new media but despite of this we are still inherently the same human beings as have come before us in previous centuries: sensible, reflective and emotional.
Abstract & Reality
-Even if an artist wants to produce a "pure" abstract painting it is never really distinct from reality and always comes from their experience of it. We allow the viewer to move from particular to general and back to particular. The painting still appeals to the sense of familiar but more indirectly and at the same time asserts relationships between space and the shapes interacting within that particular space.
-I recognise creativity as a process that continuously evaluates, and particular artworks are representations of stages within this process. Through the fragmentation of complexity I've moved from stable constructed objects towards fluid forms and captured movement.
-I believe choice of an object to paint happens instinctively. The choice of a subject matter does not necessarily come from one experience, but rather is a combination of many factors. Even if there is a main focus for an artwork there can be much more broad understanding of it looking at all of artists experiences and every sort of context.
Complexity & Fragmentation
-The particular objects that I choose to paint are mostly complex compositions which can easily be seen as abstract when viewed through the lens of artistic perspective. These can be parts of some machines or other industrial elements; the urban detritus of modern living.
-The interpretation of my work is often a broad spectrum of different reactions and I find it interesting what other people see, as there is a bit of truth in each viewpoint. Each is a facet that I may have had an inkling of but not fully realised.
