Artist Statement:
“The Weight of What Never Leaves” considers the quiet endurance of living with unresolved internal matter—memories, grief, or thoughts that cannot be expelled.
The figure does not confront the suspended form above her; she has learned to live beneath it. The room becomes a container for psychological inheritance, where time accumulates instead of passing.
I am drawn to moments where collapse does not occur—where survival is not heroic, but habitual. The work reflects how the mind can become a room we inhabit for decades, furnished sparingly, haunted persistently.
This piece is less about trauma than about accommodation: the human ability to continue, even when the weight remains.
On November 10, one hundred and twenty-seven high school seniors, with support from ninety-one volunteers, produced vivid, compelling personal statements at West Adams Preparatory High School.
