As with other Soviet-era rangefinders, the shutter speed selector rotates when the shutter is released, and should not be changed until after the shutter has been cocked. If you change the shutter speed without cocking the shutter first, the setting pin can be broken when you advance the film and cock the shutter.
The Start is a very well made and interesting system SLR camera, and entirely mechanical. It was aimed at the professional market. At its era there is no other system camera in the Soviet Union.
It was often referred to as the "Russian Exakta". At that time Start was the only competition to the Exakta available within the Soviet Union and the Soviet-dominated part of Europe. It was at least in principle, the only other system camera, providing not only interchangeable lenses, but also finders and viewing screens.
Helios-44 58 mm f/2 is similar to the Zeiss Biotar. But unfortunately this is the Start system's only manufactured lens. There is an adapter for M39 screw mount Zenith lenses, but this was not an attractive option, as such lenses did not have automatic aperture system.

On a day trip to Algonquin Park Ontario Canada with my son. Oct 18, 2018. We started off just before dawn. It had snowed a little the night before and was really cold.
Algonquin Provincial Park is a provincial park located between Georgian Bay and the Ottawa River in Ontario, Canada, mostly within the Unorganized South Part of Nipissing District. Established in 1893, it is the oldest provincial park in Canada. Additions since its creation have increased the park to its current size of about 7,653 square kilometres (2,955 sq mi). For comparison purposes, this is about one and a half times the size of Prince Edward Island or about a quarter of the size of Belgium. The park is contiguous with several smaller, administratively separate provincial parks that protect important rivers in the area, resulting in a larger total protected area.

The starter walks down the grid setting the cars off on their formation lap.
The number 2 car, a Porsche, heads the field. This car went on to battle with the number 5 Toyota throughout the 24 hour race. The Toyota was heading for victory when on crossing the line to start its final lap the Toyota broke down allowing the number 2 Porsche to sweep past and claim victory, for the 18th time for Porsche. No team, as yet, has won as many races at what many say is the greatest motor race of all time.

A pleasent morning with Lloyd W.A. Cosway and Mark Lakeman at Start Point
This is a shot I've managed to salvage from lots of shots that have had to be binned due to rain all over my lens, another lesson learned! I was perched up here on a very blustery morning yesterday, only inches away from what was potentially a slip to certain death (may be slightly dramatised). Just before the sun came up there was a little shower that I thought I'd managed to get my gear away from in time but obviously not, instead of checking and drying my lens (due to being precariously balanced) I just carried on regardless. Any how, after loading them on to the computer and thinking I'd lost them all I'm quite happy I managed to get anything from the morning.
Shot with D3100 and Nikon 12-24mm
Any constructive crit welcomed.
Cheers,
Gary.
Edit: I've just started a Facebook page to show some more of my photos, hopefully it will be used for all types of photography that I will be experimenting with. I also hope to use it to build up some like minded contacts. There's not much on there at the moment but over the coming weeks and months I will be adding plenty. If you are a facebook user and have time please take a look and maybe even like. Feel free to leave a link for any facebook pages you may have for me to check out. Cheers, Gary
I cleared my parcel and started all over again. I was growing a little bit bored with how it was, and a few days ago tier was due again and I thought long and hard. Why pay so much money for something that bores you?
Well the answer is clear. SL doesn't bore me - the same old same old does, so I paid the tier, and flew back home and cleared it all out. Nothing left on ground, and then I started again.
It feels like a completely new place now, much more arty, and suddenly the April Fool Ship emerged from the waters as we were sitting on the pier relaxing.
My handsome and clever man said the parcel looks like no other place he has ever been to, and that is the best compliment ever.
Just like no place we have ever been before is just how I want it!
