Needless to say, there are lots of hills in San Francisco. This is Powell Street, where the cable cars run from Market Street all the way up to Fishermans Wharf.

The Long-tailed Tit constructs a beautifully intricate domed nest made from cobwebs and lichens. It is then lined with feathers. The nest has the ability to expand to accommodate the growing chicks. With up to 1,500 feathers to find this one was very busy. Starting with quite large feathers, and as work progressed over a few days, finishing with small fluffy ones, in time for egg laying.

Although they are very tame, confiding little birds, it is still very important to stay well away from their nests, as I did of course.

Thank you for having a look at my photos. Comments or faves are very welcome and much appreciated.

Maplewood flats a wildlife and bird sanctuary, also contains these scale model houses built during the 2010 Olympics. The houses were built to simulate the original squatters shacks that were origianally called Shangra-La that were present for years. The city tore the originals down to put in a shopping mall that never happened The wildlife reserve over 30 acres, is a much more pleasant way to spend the afternoon! Wish I had come with a more wide angle lens for these tiny shacks. I also missed the prime time fall leaves by a storm or two!

I didn't know this mushroom start with rod shape rather than vase shape.

Catching a beautiful sunrise on the northern tip of Nova Scotia in Aspy Bay on Cape Breton Island. Although the scene was peaceful, the mosquitoes were relentless in attacking me as I framed and took several shots.

A desert bighorn ram takes a break at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.

As we were driving around the park, we were hopeful of seeing some of the desert bighorns that inhabit the area. I just marvel at how they have been able to adapt to the harsh environment. We had seen a small herd on our last trip here in May, and this time I was hopeful to capture a ram with a large set of curled horns. We saw a couple of cars parked along the roadside and started to scan the hillside. As always, my wife saw him first (she is amazing!). I could barely make him out, but she assured me it was a ram. We stopped the car, got out and saw where a few other people were photographing this magnificent animal. We slowly made our way to where they were shooting and stayed with them for a good 15 minutes watching and shooting. He spent most of his time with his head turned away from us. He finally turned and we were treated with this display. I was hand holding the 80-400 hoping that I was steady enough for good images (I left the 600 back at the motorhome - lessons always learned the hard way!). As he was in no hurry to move and not wanting to disturb him we headed back to the car as we were not parked in a "legal" spot and I did not want to end this moment with a ticket.

Dead Can Dance - The Carnival Is Over

Thank you all for your visits, faves, invites and wonderful comments !

I first start with mentally visualizing the shot. i.e. How the couple will be posed and how to frame them with the Milky Way. In this case, I knew I wanted to have a light behind the couple to have a back lit effect and to create long shadows. I wanted the couple to be framed by the Milky Way bow which would mean capturing a multi-row panorama for a sufficiently wide field of view.

I set up a wirelessly triggered speedlight on a flash stand behind the couple and got them to stand in the desired position with their jackets on, not yet holding the pose. I programmed my Gigapan panorama mount to capture a 40 frame photosphere in a 8 x 5 grid pattern which would take a total of 17 minutes.

As the camera was capturing the sky during the first 8 minutes of the image, the couple had the chance to soak in the view of the Milky Way. When it was time to capture the foreground, I ran to the couple and collected their jackets and asked them to hold the pose for the next 3 frames and quickly returning their jackets upon completion of those frames.

After the shoot, the frames are prepared in Adobe Lightroom and stitched together in Autopano Giga. The final stitched images are usually in the range of 250 to 300 megapixels. They are then processed to my taste and cropped down to size in Photoshop.

As so often happens here in my neck of the woods, we are on a tempature rollar coaster. Frosty starts with warm days.

The leaves outlined in frost, proved to hard for me to pass up this morning.
