Old Springvale railway station during grade separation works in early 2014. A new lowered station is being constructed immediately to the north of the old one and will be completed later in the year.
Last day of trains using the level crossing - Wednesday April 16 2014. Over the Easter long weekend the line was closed to allow works to connect the new lowered line under Springvale Road. For the final few days trains were stopping at the UP platform only with a bus connecting to Sandown Park for the DOWN service.
The following day track and overhead were being removed from the old line making way for the connections to the new line.

Late 1980's/early 90's pedestrian boom gate kept in service at level crossing until new line is opened.
This building towers over the railway line adjacent to the (current) Spingvale Road level crossing. It is a relic of WWII when the importation of chemicals to Australia was restricted. This facility, 97 feet feet high, was built in 1943 to produce resins, turpentine, acetates, oil and tars locally from waste timber products.
Today the tower is empty, but the ground floor remains in use as an air conditioning retail showroom and warehouse. The height of the building is shown by the comparison with the 1922 lattice overhead structure, with extensions originally for 22kV lines to the old Springvale traction substation.

Due to the close proximity of the cutting being constructed to the existing tracks, the 1920's overhead structures required removal early and two track cantilever structures installed to prevent undermining from the construction activity along the DOWN platform.

Looking in UP direction over the completed concrete bridge deck over where the new line will run. The old at-grade line is to the left of shot. The 1940's Emptor building can be seen at right of shot.
A bit of a gem in Springvale. It's the only place I know of that serves a delicious crab soup with mung bean noodles.

Note that unlike older Bunnings Warehouses, this building is constructed using tilt-up concrete slabs to the full height of the building. Previously they had tilt up part was, with dark green Colorbond cladding the remainder of the way up.

Site of Springvale Cemetery station looking towards Melbourne. The station opened in February 1904 and had one gravel platform and a short siding at the DOWN end of the platform. It was electrified along with the Dandenong line in 1922. This photo of a Tait at the station in 1938 suggests a runaround loop also existed from steam days.
A plan of the short branch line can be found here - the loop line dotted in around the cemetery was never constructed. The original Sandown Park Racecourse was closed in 1932 during a rationalisation of race tracks around Melbourne, and a larger course was rebuilt and opened in 1965. The new course obliterated the rail alignment south of Dandenong Road, except for a short stub used as a siding for many years to the former Rocla plant.
