Last day of trains using the level crossing - Wednesday April 16 2014. Over the Easter long weekend the line was closed to allow works to connect the new lowered line under Springvale Road. For the final few days trains were stopping at the UP platform only with a bus connecting to Sandown Park for the DOWN service.
The following day track and overhead were being removed from the old line making way for the connections to the new line.

plus hot Vietnamese coffee for only AUD8 total - Cafe Thu Thu, Springvale. A steaming bowl of congee filled with a prawn, meatloaf, a slice of pork intestine filled with pork, lemongrass and black pepper, and bits of deliciously rubbery chicken heart and crunchy pork fallopian tubes. Oh and a quail egg and beansprouts for good measure! Don't forget the crunchy Chinese doughnuts on top :)
At first I couldn’t understand why I had such a good view of the old GKN administration building; then I realised the trees have been cleared.
A not-so-old Beaurepaires car service centre, built using the tilt-up slab system, undergoing demolition on the corner of Westall Road and Osborne Avenue in August 2014. It had remained vacant for some months before demolition.

Hu Tieu Nam Vang 金边粉 AUD8.50 - Dao Vien 桃园, Springvale. Topped with tender sliced pork shoulder, liver, heart, intestines and blood jelly and golden nuggets of rendered cubes of pork fat, prawn, and a prawn cracker, made for a great dish, even if the noodles were a bit overcooked. The soft noodles were perfect for Isaac though!

Progress of works to remove level crossing on Springvale Road in Springvale as of late July 2013. Service relocations have been completed and major civil works are underway to construct a new rail cutting and station immediately to the north of the existing lines.
The works are designed to keep the old line and station open as long as possible before shifting to the new line under Springvale Road. The car park to the north of the station has been closed to make way for the work site with additional car parking provided at nearby Sandown Park station.
A truck load of reinforcement cages being delivered to site. These will be lowered into the soldier piles which will form the walls of the cutting for the new line and station site.

A new right turn lane constructed from Princes Highway outbound and relocation of street lighting and some road signage is part of the works.
Old pram crossing through median dating back to the early 1960's widening of Dandenong Road to 6 lanes. It is not a signalised pedestrian crossing but rather simply located between a pair of bus stops on opposite sides of the road.
Detail of the roof truss in the former supermarket section. The old ceiling was once attached to the bottom and was not seen inside when operating as Woolworths/Safeway.
Prawn beancurd rolls with banh hoi rice noodle cakes 腐皮虾卷滨海 AUD11.50 - Dao Vien 桃园, Springvale. Crispy fried prawn rolls, but the filling seemed a bit soggy today and the noodle cakes a bit dry. The fresh herbs were good though.

Remaining overhead structures from Springvale Cemetery Line which operated from DOWN side of Springvale Station between 1904 and 1947 (the line was officially booked out in 1951 several months after removal of the overhead). The line was removed and the 'new' Sandown Racecourse obliterated the former right of way. A short section remained for many years serving as a siding for Springvale station and for the nearby Rocla plant when it was operating.
In recent years it was booked out of use before being dismantled to allow construction for a new substation as part of the Westall upgrade project.

Installation of temporary overhead structures over existing tracks in late August, 2013.
Due to the close proximity of the cutting being constructed to the existing tracks, the 1920's overhead structures required removal early and two track cantilever structures installed to prevent undermining from the construction activity along the DOWN platform.

Two love crossed trolleys from the houses of Asda and Tesco. Rather than endure the wrath of their families, these ill fated lovers chose to end it in the wood at Springvale.
I never fail to be surprised at the number of Tesco trolleys which end up in Cwmbran, the nearest Tesco being in Pontypool about three miles away.

Today's Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab was also wonderfully crisp, but yet moist and tasty inside. This could have done with more fried garlic and chilli topping though.

Not what I expected to see as I came round the corner! An Iveco “Jurassic Park Tour Bus” parked at the top of the industrial estate. Perhaps the Allosaurus on Five Locks Road (see below) has been included in the tour itinerary.
There’s a warning about keeping the windows up - not much use if a Tyrannosaurus Rex decides to stomp on the minibus!
