Banh Canh Cua Tom Thit - Hoa Tran, Springvale AUD9.50. Deliciously slurpy banh canh noodles in a thick crab and turmeric broth with slices of fish cake, prawn, blood jelly and a pork trotter.

The stream was useful to the workers as a coal washery, but needed to be drained off in order for coal to be extracted, so this large drainage adit was constructed. In later years the water from this source was fed into the mains water supply.

By this time the DOWN platform had already been removed due to its close proximity to the new station building. Track and overhead on the old alignment had been removed, with the exception of tracks in the bitumen crossing Springvale Road.

Progress of works in February 2014 for the removal of the level crossing at Springvale. The bridge deck is complete and the new depressed line is being excavated and the new station is under construction, immediately to the north of the old one.
Works are to be completed during 2014.

The Coal Authority has been beefing up the fencing to keep out trespassers. The keystone is carved "PN & B Co 1879" (Patent Nut & Bolt Co (Pre- GKN).

A common mayfly (Ephemera danica) also known as green drake mayfly, and very widespread. With the darkness of the wings it is probably a sub-imago (juvenile).

The new tracks will be in a cutting located immediately to the north of the existing line, enabling rail traffic to operate as long as possible before being switched to the new line.
Progress of works to remove level crossing on Springvale Road in Springvale as of late July 2013. Service relocations have been completed and major civil works are underway to construct a new rail cutting and station immediately to the north of the existing lines.
The works are designed to keep the old line and station open as long as possible before shifting to the new line under Springvale Road. The car park to the north of the station has been closed to make way for the work site with additional car parking provided at nearby Sandown Park station.

Late 1980's/early 90's pedestrian boom gate kept in service at level crossing until new line is opened.
This building towers over the railway line adjacent to the (current) Spingvale Road level crossing. It is a relic of WWII when the importation of chemicals to Australia was restricted. This facility, 97 feet feet high, was built in 1943 to produce resins, turpentine, acetates, oil and tars locally from waste timber products.
Today the tower is empty, but the ground floor remains in use as an air conditioning retail showroom and warehouse. The height of the building is shown by the comparison with the 1922 lattice overhead structure, with extensions originally for 22kV lines to the old Springvale traction substation.

Due to the close proximity of the cutting being constructed to the existing tracks, the 1920's overhead structures required removal early and two track cantilever structures installed to prevent undermining from the construction activity along the DOWN platform.
