The current Springvale Central arcade is an L-shaped building with entrances on both Springvale Road and Windsor Avenue. Built around 1961, it was originally Rockman's Shopwell Department Store. An 80-foot sign at front, originally read ROCKMANS and towered above other buildings, except the Emptor building near the railway line

In the 1970's the building became a Woolworths store and supermarket; the variety store faced Springvale Road and the supermarket Windsor Avenue. The tall sign at the front was changed to read 'WOOLWORTHS' to match. After the conversion of Victorian Woolworths supermarkets to the Safeway brand after 1985, the store was rebranded 'Safeway' but the unique store arrangement meant it retained its variety store after most others had closed.

With Woolworths having acquired Safeway there were two Safeway supermarkets in Springvale: this and another down the road - a dedicated Safeway built in the 1970's. The latter was renovated in the 1990's and this store closed and was completely stripped out to become the Springvale Central arcade that stands today. The old high sign survives as billboard advertising, as do the the old roof trusses inside, retained above as an architectural feature.

This shot is of the old supermarket section facing Windsor Avenue. The original ceiling was fixed below the trusses, with the store spanning the arcade and the shops either side.

Fluffy soft bread scattered with sesame and nigella seeds, great for soaking up the juices of the spicy chicken! The bread is very similar to Turkish bread, no doubt that is where the influence was from.

My favourite Uyghur dish, second only to their fragrant lamb skewers! This version seems a little different with the use of powdered cumin and coriander, making it taste like a curry. Served atop wonderfully slippery noodles with a good chewy texture, this dish is always welcome at my table!

Old station building on UP platform awaiting demolition after the transfer of services to the new lower level station in April 2014. By this time the DOWN platform had already been removed due to its close proximity to the new station building. Track and overhead on the old alignment had been removed, with the exception of tracks in the bitumen crossing Springvale Road.

Constructed for the electrification of the Dandenong Line in 1922, this supplied power to the line along with the Caulfield substation. Rotary rectifiers were housed in the building fed by 22kV AC 25Hz specially generated at Newport.

The AC supply was fed along the rail line between Caulfield and Springvale overhead, hence the original overhead structures along this section of line have upper extensions on them.

In 1954 and 1955 new smaller substations were built at Noble Park, Westall respectively, a replacement at Caulfield in 1956 and one at Oakleigh in 1957 using mercury arc rectifiers fed by standard 50Hz AC. Springvale was decommissioned and the building was used as an engineering firm for many years.

This shot shows two of the remaining 1922 stanchions from the branch to Springvale Cemetery. The line closed officially in 1951 and only a short siding from Springvale station remained. It too was eventually removed in 2010 to allow construction of a new traction substation.

I loved the gelatinous stewed pork leg in Thailand, with it's silky smooth skin and tender pork. This stew had a nice balance of sweetness and warm spices, with cinammon and star anise the most obvious.

Last day of trains using the level crossing - Wednesday April 16 2014. Over the Easter long weekend the line was closed to allow works to connect the new lowered line under Springvale Road. For the final few days trains were stopping at the UP platform only with a bus connecting to Sandown Park for the DOWN service.

The following day track and overhead were being removed from the old line making way for the connections to the new line.

This level crossing is now gone, the line goes underground at this location now.‎ But it was very common to have vehicles stuck on the level crossing or to have pedestrians run across in front of trains.

And yes, the lights are flashing and the booms are just starting to come down. The problem here is that the red light they are facing should have been green or yellow a little longer so traffic could clear the crossing, well, it will never be a problem for trains now.

Unfortunately, not long before it was opened, a woman pedestrian was killed at this location.

The Sweet and Sour Beijing Pork Ribs had a wonderfully tangy sauce, just like last time. The texture of the sauce of syrupy and not at all claggy, while the pork was still tender and moist.

Springvale Botanical Cemetery’s War memorials..

The Victorian Garden of Remembrance is situated within the Springvale Botanical Cemetery in Melbourne. The original garden was opened in the early 1960s and was extended in 1988. The extensions were officially opened by the then Minister for Veterans' Affairs, the Hon. Ben Humphreys MP, on 3 March 1989..

.

The Victorian Garden of Remembrance has a plaque capacity of 70,000..

.

The entry building houses the register books which list the wall and row number of each plaque..

.

When first entering the garden, the visitor will see, towards the rear, the large granite stone which bears a commemorative plaque collectively honouring all those whose names are inscribed in the garden. On each side of the pathways are walls bearing plaques commemorating individual veterans..

.

Midway, between the entrance and the commemorative stone, a path leads into the extended Garden of Remembrance. A little way along is the plaque marking the dedication of the extended garden..

.

The visitor proceeding through the garden will walk through the European Sunken Garden, which is bounded by a covered pergola, then on to an Australian Dry Creek Bed and the Asian Garden. The European and Asian gardens symbolise the main theatres of war in which Australians served during the First and Second World Wars and subsequent conflicts..

.

The Victorian Garden of Remembrance earned a nomination in the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects award programme.

This memorial stone and plaque is located in the Springvale Cemetery and commemorates the old Springvale Cemetery Railway line that ran off the main Dandenong line at Springvale. The line was opened in 1904, it was original used by steam hauled trains and was later electrified in 1922. The last train ran in 1947, and the line closed in 1951.

The carriage depicted here, had sockets for the train jumper cable to go into, so that all driver functions on the front went through the Mortuary carriage to the passenger carriages. They would put it in the consist of a suburban electric train and run it from the City to the Cemetery, the mourners would travel in the carriages while the bodies were transported in the special Mortuary Carriages. There is a restored carriage just in side the Fawkner Cemetery, or as they are now called, Fawkner Memorial Park. It is on the left, just as you cross the railway line, beside the DOWN platform.

Above the carriage can be seen the Train Staff for the section, it is metal with the names of the stations on it, in this case it would have Springvale and Spring Vale Cemetery written on the right hand side, while on the left, the end was hollow, with a lug inside it, while on the outside rim, you can see a small cutaway on the rim, that forms part of the key function. It would be placed in the staff Box, to unlock it and access the Train Staff Ticket Book. If more than one train was to go on the line, the first train would get a ticket, and after receiving notice the train had arrived, the second train would run on the Train Staff.
