This memorial stone and plaque is located in the Springvale Cemetery and commemorates the old Springvale Cemetery Railway line that ran off the main Dandenong line at Springvale. The line was opened in 1904, it was original used by steam hauled trains and was later electrified in 1922. The last train ran in 1947, and the line closed in 1951.
The carriage depicted here, had sockets for the train jumper cable to go into, so that all driver functions on the front went through the Mortuary carriage to the passenger carriages. They would put it in the consist of a suburban electric train and run it from the City to the Cemetery, the mourners would travel in the carriages while the bodies were transported in the special Mortuary Carriages. There is a restored carriage just in side the Fawkner Cemetery, or as they are now called, Fawkner Memorial Park. It is on the left, just as you cross the railway line, beside the DOWN platform.
Above the carriage can be seen the Train Staff for the section, it is metal with the names of the stations on it, in this case it would have Springvale and Spring Vale Cemetery written on the right hand side, while on the left, the end was hollow, with a lug inside it, while on the outside rim, you can see a small cutaway on the rim, that forms part of the key function. It would be placed in the staff Box, to unlock it and access the Train Staff Ticket Book. If more than one train was to go on the line, the first train would get a ticket, and after receiving notice the train had arrived, the second train would run on the Train Staff.

New large Bunnings Warehouse under construction between Princes Highway and Centre road, located close to the busy Springvale Junction. This site is located close to the Sandown Bunnings Warehouse, which has traded since the mid 1990's
Note that unlike older Bunnings Warehouses, this building is constructed using tilt-up concrete slabs to the full height of the building. Previously they had tilt up part was, with dark green Colorbond cladding the remainder of the way up.

Old station showing original overhead stanchion from electrification of the line to Dandenong in 1922. The stanchions between Caulfield and Springvale have the upper extensions shown here which originally carried specially generated 20kV 25Hz AC power to the long-decommissioned original substation which was fitted with mechanical rotary rectifiers. The building housing it however still stands today.
Progress of works to remove level crossing on Springvale Road in Springvale as of late July 2013. Service relocations have been completed and major civil works are underway to construct a new rail cutting and station immediately to the north of the existing lines.
The works are designed to keep the old line and station open as long as possible before shifting to the new line under Springvale Road. The car park to the north of the station has been closed to make way for the work site with additional car parking provided at nearby Sandown Park station.
Crane and drilling rig on site which will construct soldier piles either side of the cutting for the new line and station. Pre-assembled steel reinforcement cages will be lowered in to form the piles and concrete poured.
A Siemens built suburban train is seen here on a service to Melbournes Flinders Street Station, having just departed Springvale Station. This train wears the new Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) livery.

For the final few days trains were stopping at the UP platform only with a bus connecting to Sandown Park for the DOWN service.
The following day track and overhead were being removed from the old line making way for the connections to the new line.
My Pomeranian's at Springvale Cemetery standing at the head of a WW1 Anzac / Digger and a WW2 Anzac / Digger's grave.
My Grandfather, Walter Parkinson, fought in the Great War in France, he was wounded and was sent to England to recover, and was due to go back on the line the day the Armistice was signed.
My Father, Geoffrey Parkinson, fought in the 2nd World War and was in the 24th Infantry Battalion and fought on the Kokoda Track in New Guinea, he was repatriated back to Australia and spent his last years in the Army guarding POW's, Prisoners of War, at Murchison, in Victoria.

Today's Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab was also wonderfully crisp, but yet moist and tasty inside. This could have done with more fried garlic and chilli topping though.

Either it is an accident or beyond its age, our carefully handled favourite car gets old, damaged, rusty, abandoned or impounded and becomes unwanted. It then finds a temporary shelter in a junkyard. A junkyard is also known as a car wrecker, a place where damaged or old vehicles are broken up and recycled to obtain useable parts and scrap metal.
Junkyards make a significant contribution to the economy. It is estimated that the vehicle attrition rate in Australia is 4.1% which is approximately 700,000 vehicles a year and produces 980,000 tonnes of waste each year. Thus, it requires a significant amount of workforce involvement to safely dispose of these vehicles as well as sustain the growth of this industry.
Imlachs Self Serve Auto Parts, a junkyard in Springvale, Victoria is a busy place full of activity throughout the day. People come here to sell their unwanted cars as scrap metal or collect recyclable parts from the damaged vehicles. There are 3 multi-dismantling machines, 2 forklifts, 6 trucks and 4 automotive lifts in operation with 36 shift workers to operate and run the business.

Old Springvale railway station during grade separation works in early 2014. A new lowered station is being constructed immediately to the north of the old one and will be completed later in the year.
Chewy little dumpling made of sago pearls with a savoury sweet filling of mung bean paste, topped with toasted sesame seeds for a nice nuttiness. A little tub of sweetened, thickened coconut milk was served on the side to add some creaminess to this delicious dessert!
Very similar to the Saku Sai Thai sago dumplings!

Progress of works in February 2014 for the removal of the level crossing at Springvale. The bridge deck is complete and the new depressed line is being excavated and the new station is under construction, immediately to the north of the old one.
Works are to be completed during 2014.
Late 1960's/1970s CRB-type traffic signal mast for the level crossing lights with a late 1980's/early 90's pedestrian boom gate.
The beef pho came with a rich brown beef broth, and the rice noodles with slippery but with a nice bite. Not bad at all!
I noticed that this shop had Cambodian (i think, or maybe Lao) writing on the wall, and one table of diners spoke very little English, so the waitress got them a menu with similar script. Perhaps this is a pho place popular with Cambodians?

Older Red Roof Pizza Hut which was renovated in the 1990's. The newer style windows, glassed in eating area at the front and brick wall are from these works. Closed in the 2000's and has been 'La Festiva' Pizza and Pasta restaurant ever since ... Yes you can still get a pizza here!
Old station building on UP platform awaiting demolition after the transfer of services to the new lower level station in April 2014. By this time the DOWN platform had already been removed due to its close proximity to the new station building. Track and overhead on the old alignment had been removed, with the exception of tracks in the bitumen crossing Springvale Road.

Progress of works to remove level crossing on Springvale Road in Springvale as of late July 2013. Service relocations have been completed and major civil works are underway to construct a new rail cutting and station immediately to the north of the existing lines.
The works are designed to keep the old line and station open as long as possible before shifting to the new line under Springvale Road. The car park to the north of the station has been closed to make way for the work site with additional car parking provided at nearby Sandown Park station.
Pair of original 1922 wire tensioning structures at DOWN end of station. Behind is a new substation and the original substation behind. The original has been decommissioned for decades and used mechanical rotary rectifiers to produce 1500V DC for the traction system. This used specially generated 20kV 25Hz power fed along the overhead on the upper extensions from Caulfield out to Springvale. The last of these structures is the one on the left from where it was fed to the substation. It was replaced in the 1950's by substations at Noble Park and Westall. The new facility to the left was built as part of the upgrade to Westall station and stabling yard.

This level crossing is now gone, the line goes underground at this location now. But it was very common to have vehicles stuck on the level crossing or to have pedestrians run across in front of trains.
And yes, the lights are flashing and the booms are just starting to come down.
Unfortunately, not long before it was opened, a woman pedestrian was killed at this location.
There is provision for two extra tracks on the South side of the line, where the station used to exist. One is for suburban trains and the other track will be for the planned freight line to Western Port where is is planned to use the deep water harbour area for container ships. I was told it was going to be Standard Gauge, but a politician told me it was definitely going to be Broad Gauge.
