This memorial stone and plaque is located in the Springvale Cemetery and commemorates the old Springvale Cemetery Railway line that ran off the main Dandenong line at Springvale. The line was opened in 1904, it was original used by steam hauled trains and was later electrified in 1922. The last train ran in 1947, and the line closed in 1951.

The carriage depicted here, had sockets for the train jumper cable to go into, so that all driver functions on the front went through the Mortuary carriage to the passenger carriages. They would put it in the consist of a suburban electric train and run it from the City to the Cemetery, the mourners would travel in the carriages while the bodies were transported in the special Mortuary Carriages. There is a restored carriage just in side the Fawkner Cemetery, or as they are now called, Fawkner Memorial Park. It is on the left, just as you cross the railway line, beside the DOWN platform.

Above the carriage can be seen the Train Staff for the section, it is metal with the names of the stations on it, in this case it would have Springvale and Spring Vale Cemetery written on the right hand side, while on the left, the end was hollow, with a lug inside it, while on the outside rim, you can see a small cutaway on the rim, that forms part of the key function. It would be placed in the staff Box, to unlock it and access the Train Staff Ticket Book. If more than one train was to go on the line, the first train would get a ticket, and after receiving notice the train had arrived, the second train would run on the Train Staff.

This is the first of two Gallipoli pines in Glen Waverley, this one located, in Central Reserve on Springvale Road. The pine is located next to the Glen Waverley war memorial and memorial gates. See the locale on Google Maps.

The seedling from the Gallipoli Lone Pine was planted on Remembrance Day 1981 by the then Mayor, Cr. P. Le Grand. At the planting he said:

"The tree would act as a constant reminder to the people of the future, of the sacrifice made by the people who lost their lives in the War."

A commemorative plaque is located at the base of the tree.

A day in a Junkyard

Salahuddin Ahmad, Melbourne Polytechnic, Victoria, Australia.

Either it is an accident or beyond its age, our carefully handled favourite car gets old, damaged, rusty, abandoned or impounded and becomes unwanted. It then finds a temporary shelter in a junkyard. A junkyard is also known as a car wrecker, a place where damaged or old vehicles are broken up and recycled to obtain useable parts and scrap metal.

Junkyards make a significant contribution to the economy. It is estimated that the vehicle attrition rate in Australia is 4.1% which is approximately 700,000 vehicles a year and produces 980,000 tonnes of waste each year. Thus, it requires a significant amount of workforce involvement to safely dispose of these vehicles as well as sustain the growth of this industry.

Imlachs Self Serve Auto Parts, a junkyard in Springvale, Victoria is a busy place full of activity throughout the day. People come here to sell their unwanted cars as scrap metal or collect recyclable parts from the damaged vehicles. There are 3 multi-dismantling machines, 2 forklifts, 6 trucks and 4 automotive lifts in operation with 36 shift workers to operate and run the business.

The Junkyard offers an environmentally friendly place to dispose of unused and unwanted vehicles. These unwanted cars contain toxic battery acids, toxic chemicals, engine oils and other fluids which can cause long term damage to soils, water and air quality. To minimise the environmental impacts, the most environmentally friendly way is to dispose of them in a junkyard with authorized operators.

Location: Imlachs Self Serve Auto Parts, Springvale, Victoria, Australia.

This was one of the first churches in the Shire of Mulgrave, located on the corner of Springvale and Wellington Roads.

Designed by the architect Leonard Terry and built in 1869, the church existed on the site for over 107 years until it was demolished in 1976. Some of the stone from the church were used to construct a feature wall for the new St Matthews Church in Lum Road, Wheelers Hill.

A memorial stained glass window, dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant B. Atkinson, AIF, killed in 1915 in Gallipoli during World War I, was relocated to the new church.

The site of the original church is now occupied by a McDonalds restaurant. See locale on Google Maps.

We love the 芥菜 "gai choy" with the big stems that can only be found at J K Asian Grocery. The stems are tender and sweet. Good sliced thinly in a crunchy stir fry, but fantastic when stewed until tender with roast duck or pork leg. It also forms part of a 菜尾 "Vegetable Ends" leftover dish flavoured with dried chillies and tart assam/tamarind slices.

The 盐走地炬鸡 "Walking Chicken" was a delicious salt-baked free-range chicken with a tasty firm flesh, smooth and chewy skin and strong bones. Full of tasty chicken flavour, even if the flesh is bordering on tough. The splash of 玫瑰露酒 rose wine before serving added a nice mellow flavour.

i left my Nikon D60 at home :(

The name Springvale arose from a permanent water source for stock and travellers between Melbourne and Dandenong that was in the vicinity of the intersection of Dandenong and Centre/Police Roads. It was near the springs in the 1850s that the Spring Vale hotel was built alongside the newly surveyed route between Oakleigh and Dandenong.

The hotel's proprietor chose that name because of the natural springs and his association with a place near the Bog of Allen in his native Ireland. It was expected that a village would spring up around the hotel but this did not eventuate until the primary school was opened at the top of the hill in 1867, and even then it never grew to its full potential at this location.

In 1886, land was subdivided and sold alongside a stopping place where Spring Vale Road and the Gippsland railway line (opened 1879) intersected. This land was nearly two kilometres south of the hotel and school on Princes Highway and it was here that the main Springvale township developed.

In May 2015, the Friends of King Alfred Buses (FOKAB) group staged an evening running event in Winchester prior to their annual running day which this year has moved from New Year's Day to the early May bank holiday Monday.

Here, well travelled Leyland Orion POU494, an East Lancs bus repatriated from the USA in 1993, is seen preparing for an evening run to Springvale on the 18 service.

My favourite Uyghur dish, second only to their fragrant lamb skewers! This version seems a little different with the use of powdered cumin and coriander, making it taste like a curry. Served atop wonderfully slippery noodles with a good chewy texture, this dish is always welcome at my table!

This might be a dam associated with the brickworks or colliery, but it is a little complex, and i think may have been the base for some sort of industrial process. This structure is at the south end of the stream, near the wettest part of the woodland.

Springvale, Minnesota (June 19, 1997) A familiar scene - My lone tent surrounded by RVs...(#62) back | next

In 1997 I rode a bicycle from Florida to Alaska. I'm posting the story here on flickr.

The next morning when I awoke, there was someone from the local paper there to interview me about my trip, and take some pictures. On the way, I stopped in a town called Pallisade to grab a burger to eat. I talked to the girl behind the counter about my trip, and she gave me her address, and asked me to send her a card from anywhere. I did. I sent her several cards from several places, including, of course, Alaska. I make it to Judy Garland's hometown of Grand Rapids getting my second highest mileage of 78 miles (126km). I camped out in a clearing in the woods near Pokegama Lake.

June 22nd, and I am on my way, having cruised about 6-7 miles (10-12km), when I realized I had left my cooler behind in the woods. I was talking with some cyclist who was going from Seattle to Pittsburgh. After he left I wanted to eat something and the cooler that straps to my handlebars was not there. I backtracked to get it and wasted a bunch of time, but I also had to pace my self on this Sunday so as not to pass my next mail pick-up. It also caused me to get the 3000th mile (4,828km) of my trip on the return trip toward Grand Rapids. Even so I go 67 miles (108km) today as I make it to the Leetch Lake Indian Reservation. I am on Cass Lake at the Knudsen Dam. It is actually the Mississippi River again. As it flows through endless lakes such as this I sit and reacquaint myself with this once great river that has followed me for most of my trip. As the distance remaining to Alaska shrinks, so does the river. I have watched it go from a monstrous body of water, crossing it on massive bridges, which themselves are great structures, to a mere stream that I've crossed on tiny footbridges. Today I sit at a small dam as what's left of the mighty Mississippi dumps into the Cass Lake...read the whole story.

Old mill building, Springvale Maine

We also had to have the น้ำตก Nam Tok noodles, commonly known as Boat Noodles, with a soup thickened with blood and occasionally topped with shredded ganja leaves!

Think medium rare steak and the minerally flavour that defines it and you'll love the soup, that also has lots of garlic and spices to round off the complex flavours.

This น้ำตก Nam Tok was also topped with little cubes of fried pork lard complete with crackling for that extra crunch!

Another change in management and a slight twist to the name. What's an extra 'e' among friends! The food is still good and very authentic though!

新疆奶茶 (咸/甜) Uyghur Special Milk Tea (salty / sweet) AUD10 per pot

Served savoury or sweet, we asked for the sugar and salt to be served separately and the waitress obliged with a nodding smile.

Out of the pot, the tea already had a savoury taste, possibly from the salted, fermented butter used in the tea. Surprisingly, it was quite pleasant, and went well with dinner. The warm milky tea was good for dousing and chilli fires in our mouths.

With a sprinkle of sugar, the sweet milky Uyghur tea was even better than the salty version!
