Patiently waiting by the water willows for some creature to snag up for lunch.

The fog was so thick over Bear Lake that the sun appeared as a disk through the clouds, and daylight wasn't much brighter than moonlight. The icy streak in the foreground is Spring Creek and the little streak of light behind the trees is all that can be seen of the lake.

Spring Creek, Ballara:

The crossing and waterhole of Spring Creek, 7.4km northeast of Ballara, was once a link in a long journey used by coach companies in the early 1900s. The camp was a site for travellers and drovers alike, and was a reliable watering point for their horses. One can still find remains of bed frames, water tanks, and relics upon the adjoining ridge. The large ghost gum tree at the crossing still bears the marks of past travellers.

Why is one day set apart from the rest when you look back into your life? What makes one day stand out vivid and arresting as if a wind blew in from the vast subconscious reaches, riffling through the old year's calendar to pin back one page before the mind's eye? ~ Cid Ricketts Sumner

This river is called Grímsá. It's a spring creek with a lot of salmon. Me, I don't care about the salmon - I'm good with the view :) Right next to this place is a camping site and hey... a restaurant too.

We spend over 3 hours in the lower part of Spring Lake walking the flooded trails and paths. From 2 inches up to a foot in water we had to re route several times but it was fun. We made it thru different terrains from grasslands, meadows, forest, marshes, wetlands, ponds and open prairies. After nearly 6 hours we arrived back at the parking lot.

Spring Creek generally flows more in the Spring, as its name implies, and is often dry this time of year exposing all of the undulating rocks along the creek bed.

SPRING CREEK BAR B Q, GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS

Spring Creek leads to Blue Hen Falls

Just got back from spending an awesome week with friends fishing, shooting and talking stories and such. Now that our cabin is sold, we stay quite literally where the East and Taylor rivers join to form the Gunnison. The Taylor RIver Canyon has remained one of my favorite places since I first saw it at the tender age of nine (we won't delve into just how long ago that was). Besides fantastic fishing, the steep canyon walls are a haven for all kinds of wildlife.

A major tributary of the Taylor is Spring Creek. This small stream tumbles through dense forests in its lower stretches and open meadows the higher you climb. The road (NF-744) along the creek is frequented by mountain bikers as is the Doctors Park trail about two thirds of the way up to Spring Creek Reservoir (my daughter says this trail is a great ride. I'll take her word for it).

I tried a new technique (for me) to get the silky water in this shot which does not require the use of ND filters. I used Nikon's multiple exposure mode that allows you to take between 2 and 10 shots which the camera in turn converts into a single raw image. A sturdy tripod is a must for this technique as is a windless day. I varied the exposure counts but unfortunately the EXIF data does not record the shot count used for each image. It also takes a bit of playing around with the exposure. This image was a -2/3 EV.

I like the results but I like using ND filters better. I think the water, while silky has lost a bit of definition.

In fact, it is not even a creek in the fall. It is Policeman's Creek and it has plenty of water most of the time. That's the Rundle Massif in the background. We had a great day taking in the fall colours in the mountains.

We found this beautiful creek while going on a little drive today in our new vehicle! Fun, fun, fun!

I cropped out some of the foreground grasses and cloudy sky.

2024-09-09, Day 3

Steep and highly eroded colorful minerals lead the eye from the heights of Hoge Pass across the Donjek River toward the heart of the Kluane Range, Kluane National Park, Yukon. Across the river, which flows from left to right in the frame, the waters of Spring Creek cut an erratic, braided path and arrange the mountains’ innards into a mighty alluvial fan.

The eroded slopes in the middle distance toward the left of the frame indicate clearly that this landscape can be difficult to traverse for those who must rely on only two legs. For this section of the Donjek Route, the good people at Parks Canada provide accurate, if not entirely confidence inspiring guidance. To paraphrase: You will follow a tributary of Burwash Creek upward to Hoge Pass and it will seem natural to descend the broad, relatively gently sloping valley that appears on the other side of the Pass. Do not go this way (not explicitly stated but inferred: it probably cliffs out). Instead, climb the ridges to the southwest of the Pass and stay as high as possible while you traverse toward the west. When one arrives at the grassy gully that is shown in this photo, do not descend (we could see: it cliffs out). Eventually, a very steep canyon provides a shifting scree slope that yields passage to Hoge Creek and eventually to the River itself.

In January in the year 49 BCE, Julius Caesar brought his army south toward Rome with the aim of precipitating civil war and installing himself as the new head of state for life. Prior to this military move, Caesar acted as governor of lands to the north of Rome. Governors commanded armies to keep control over the territories they stewarded, but Roman law required that armies could not be brought into Rome’s immediate lands. Any governor who did bring such an army into Rome would commit an act of treason, and by such action would provoke a civil war. The Rubicon River formed the northern boundary of Rome’s immediate lands at this point in history, and when Caesar crossed the Rubicon and formally made war against Rome he is reported to have said, “the die is cast.”

My friend and I sat for awhile in the grass and absorbed the magnitude and beauty all at once, as well as the gravity of what it would mean to try and find a safe way down these slopes and to the River. It was clear that once down, assuming safe passage could be found, it would be an immense amount of work, and potentially unsafe, to try and reverse course in the event of an accident of any kind. The view here is the reason that Parks Canada strongly suggests that the traditional anti-clockwise direction for hiking the Donjek Route is really a good choice. On day three off-trail, one finally discovers a personal Rubicon, a point from which return is nigh impossible. It does give a person pause, as it ought.

Colorado Springs, CO - It's hard to believe we are in mid December and the weather has continued to be pretty mild for Colorado. There was a small cold front that dropped a just a dusting of snow in our area. It felt like I was in the middle of a defective snow globe. Though it wasn't much it's still appropriated.

Around the bend upstream from the large waterfall on Spring Creek in Waterloo, TN is this much smaller waterfall. A beautiful, easy place to get too just off Waterloo Rd (the bridge in the background is Waterloo Rd). It is a great place to do a little exploring, take some photos, or even do a little swimming.

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.
