This plant was buzzing with both honey bees and white tailed bumble bees on Thursday at Rowallane Gardens. Good to clock it as a good bee plant that i hadnt known about and to get to add a new entry to my Honey bees on named flowers set!

October 27th, 2025, will mark the 103rd anniversary of Shuzo Fujimoto’s birth. On this occasion, I’m publishing this picture of Shuzo Fujimoto, taken by
Robert Lang on May 4th, 2006, at Fujimoto’s home in Sasayama, Japan.

A Photo from Day 8 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.
When planning this "Rail Tour" I had hoped to go the Great Central Railway (GCR) at Loughborough but a lack of Timetables on their web site and a shortage of anything i viewed as attractive in terms numbers of Steam Locomotives in service on this day (Saturday) prompted a change of plan.
I decided to go to the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway (EBA) in the morning and I can move onto the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (KWVR) in the afternoon. It is only about 30 minutes by car between the 2 railways.
When I arrived at "ingrow West" Station on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (KWVR), there were 2 Steam Trains operating along the line. I missed the USATC 5820 "Big Jim" loco which was powering the other train and waited for the LMS Ivatt loco which was going to Keighley and then going the full length of the line to Oxenhope.
Although I would normally get off and photograph the run round etc., the bad weather made me stay put. I didn't get any photos at Keighley but like to get Video of locos going uphill as the line sets off from Keighley.
Here, the only photo I am going to share with Flickr users is of 41241 at Oxenhope Station.
41241 is an Ivatt designed and Crewe Works built for the LMS 2MT Tank loco.
Shortly after this I return to Ingrow West Station on board a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway "First Class" restored carriage which costs £2 or £3 pounds as a supplement.
During this journey i met an elderly retired Farmer who was having a very good week using a rail rover ticket.
I need to consider this option for 2022.

*the biggest thing you may not know about me is that i'm insecure...i've never been the beautiful girl, and i don't like having my photo taken. i also don't do well with compliments. 365 days has been an experiment in pushing my comfort level with myself, and i think that some days i definitely do push myself (hello, asslight!).
smaller random things:
*i dated some cute boys in high school.
*i dated some not cute boys in college, until i met my husband, of course!
*i had two goats and two rabbits and a bunch of dogs and some cats growing up. i want all those animals again.
*i played clarinet in band, and the xylophone for special band festivals. playing the piano now really relaxes me, but i *never* do it.
*when i was an assistant at miramax, i was sent to hong kong to inspect film and audio elements. i don't think i knew what i was doing, and even though i was terrified to be alone over there, it was a great experience.
*i love spreadsheets...sometimes i think i might like to be an accountant. hmm.
*i enjoy giving my dogs haircuts. (dork!)
*i really do love jumping photos. (oh, wait, you knew that.)
*i really, really, really miss my friends in LA.
*i feel incredibly lucky to have the life i have now, although i don't always show it.

A Day Trip to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway for the Saturday of a 3 day Steam Gala,
As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.
There were 2 Visiting Engines and some of 5 of the Home Fleet Locomotives scheduled to run on an intensive timetable.
Here, on my first Steam Heritage Railway Visit of 2022, a Cab photo of Taff Vale no 85, a Riches designed and Kitson built Class 02 0-6-2T locomotive just after arriving at Oxenhope Station on my first Train of the day.

You know that feeling when you've created a spreadsheet, then spent hours entering data from a paper copy? Then, after a few hours, you think "that's not right". So you investigate, and find out that you haven't been given all the sheets? So now, you need to go through every month, checking if there is missing data?
And you lose the will to live?
That.
I needed a break from the computer. I had a cream cake for afternoon tea break, but needed to wash up first.
I've got another task now, so tomorrow will be yet more data entry. Oh, and there is no elegant way to eat a chocolate eclair!
Because as a data point, you might just be a cell in a spreadsheet. This is some kind of parking area for a lot of vehicles next to the Philadelphia airport. They look like all white minivans.

I've spent too much time looking at numbers and spreadsheets today. My outing was to somewhere else to look at numbers and spreadsheets.
So, a banker photo that shows a bit of my neighbourhood. The houses on the right were built in the last few years. The ground was empty when I moved here, but for many years there were warehouses on this site. The Albert Dock is on the other side of the buildings.
There are a couple of ships in the distance. One is the Fingal, which is now a floating hotel/restaurant, and isn't going anywhere. The other larger one is the Spirt of Tasmania V, which will go to Australia in a few months.
The temperature was about 7º, but the Met Office app on my phone said it felt like 2º.

This week-end involved 2 Heritage Railways with the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.
Here, after the Weybourne to Holt trip behind Class 9F Double-Header of Loco 92203 - "Black Prince", a Riddles designed, Swindon Works built - BR Class 9F - 2-10-0 and 90775 a War Department 9F recently named "The Royal Norfolk Regiment", Locomotive no 8572 is starting to form a Double Header for the return Journey to Weybourne.
There were 6 Locomotives in Steam for the Gala Event Sunday.
Locomotive 8572 is a Holden designed and Bayer Peacock built for the GER (later LNER) Class B12 - 4-6-0

At Didcot Railway Centre, their Diamond jubilee Gala had 4 steam locomotives with 2 each on the "Main Demonstration Line" and the shorter "Branch Line." 2 diesels powered some early morning and evening trains.
Several Steam Locomotives were also on Static Display and it was possible to go round the sheds.

Normally, I tend to avoid getting photos of buses heading into Kingswood Retail Park, but come on - I couldn't resist this! Two ex-Manchester buses in one go - that'll make some easy work for the spreadsheet! And it's a nice little action shot, too! Moving on from that, two particular features I would like to mention - on 19112, you may just be able to make out where it's Manchester worker bee vinyl, added across the Stagecoach Greater Manchester bus fleet in tribute to those who tragically lost their lives in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, had once been placed on the front panel, while 19054 still carries the advertising hoardings of the event that, arguably, doomed us all into this mess, the Cheltenham Festival. Make of that what you will, of course.
A very lucky shot that required a fast change of lens, newly-cascaded Stagecoach in Hull 19112, a 2007 ADL Enviro 400 new to Stagecoach in Manchester and latterly based at Middleton depot before recently being transferred to Hull, passes alongside its recently-cascaded sister 19054, a 2006 example also new to Stagecoach in Manchester that up until recently was operating for Merseyside & South Lancashire - still retaining its yellow CCTV stickers from that operation. Both here at Kingswood Retail Park, they are working the 5 and 11 respectively for Hull Interchange.

52044, is a Barton Wright and Aspinall designed and Bayer-Peacock built 0-6-0, originally for the L&Y as no 957, later renumbered 12044 for the LMS and 52044 for BR.
52044 was the locomotive used as "The Green Dragon" in the 1970 film "The Railway Children".

After a good period of FOMO over not being able to get up to York this year which has resulted in the creation of a York-based spreadsheet, I’ve realised I’ve not quite got enough of York’s buses on this Flickr page in proportion to all that I have taken, especially from my most recent visit there. So, well, exactly one year on from the last time I went to the inner city on arguably a ‘test run’ for my London trip that weekend, here we go!
These University buses have always been something quite curious to see in York. And so it seems I'm always struggling to get good photos of them. Perhaps it's down to being in the wrong place at the wrong time except for the railway station? To be quite honest, I'm not sure myself. But back to the FOMO, there is now a new window of opportunity for York for the next time I go - all First York services are being tracked live on bustimes.org! I know where I'm going straight to first when this whole mess is over - if only the rest of First West Yorkshire could be given live tracking, then it would be absolutely perfect!
Starting out a good stint of uploads from last year, taken a year to this day is First York's 'yourbus 66'-branded 37066, a 2008 Volvo B9TL Wright Eclipse Gemini with an unintentionally-befitting fleet number which was new to First Bradford, initially branded there for their Leeds-to-Bradford 72 service, however coming to York in mid-2015 and gaining its present route brand upon the awarding of the University of York bus contract to First, is seen here passing through a very busy York Railway Station working a 66 service to the University of York 'Campus East'.

This week-end involved 2 Heritage Railways with the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.
Here, after arriving at Sheringham for their Steam Gala Event, I get a Cab photo of Loco 53809, a Fowler designed, and Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn (RSH) built at Darlington as Class 7F - 2-8-0 for the S&DJR (later LMS and BR).
There were 6 Locomotives in Steam for the Gala Event Sunday.

Salix caprea 'Kilmarnock' has big male catkins which are great for the bees at this time of year.
a wonderful bee plant that fits in any garden, easy to control spread and it comes in various pre-set sizes (as it is grafted onto a stem of another willow). Smaller formats do well in a pot.
I planted this one about 12 years ago and it has grown pretty well. But for some reason, last year, there were only a handful of the male catkins. The plant seemed otherwise well but i was worried that it might have stopped producing the profusion of catkins that I had come to expect in previous years.
I am so glad to see that it has decided to make up for the lack of catkins last year!

A Photo from Day 5 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.
The East Somerset Railway (ESR) runs trains from Cranmore station to Mendip Vale station and back on a 5 mile round trip along its Heritage Railway line.
Along the line, there is also a halt and Cranmore West Station which is near the Sheds.
There is ample car parking at the Cranmore end of the line on normal running days so I started there.
The day I went during the sort of main summer holidays, there was only 1 steam Locomotive running although (4555) another was at the sheds and could have been steamed if thought necessary.
Here, Just outside the Sheds, 4555 is a GWR "Class 45xx" Churchward designed Swindon Works built 2-6-2T Loco.

The Swanage Railway runs trains from Norden via Corfe Castle, another station and a halt to Swanage Station or the other way round so there is some very pleasant scenery to look at and photograph when travelling along the line.
There is ample car parking at the Norden end of the line so I started there.

We finally had no choice but to stop procrastinating, and conquer Mt. Trim (Read backstory below for explanation, it's different from backstory in our previous statining set.)
Here you can really see just how crazy this was. The ladder was off in two axis. Ladders are supposed to point towards the wall they lean against; this one didn't. Ladders are supposed to be equal height on both sides; this one wasn't. You're also not supposed to go as high up the ladder as I had to go -- I was not able to *reach* the ladder while staining. Feet only. Very scary.
BACKSTORY: Anyone who reads our contract (link below) can see that it specified to move the closet and built-in shelves. But Virginia Design Builders's workers -- the workers hired by Daniel M. Lopez -- were unable to properly move the closet without destroying it. And they "accidentally" threw away our shelves. They also broke the trim at the edge of the closet.
And then guess what? The asshole refused to stain the broken trim (and everythign else they broke/threw away too) to match the pre-existing color, leaving US with the job of restoring what they broke to the condition it was in before broken. Months of wood-staining hell thanks to the inability of Daniel M. Lopez's company to follow simple contractual instructions, as well as a total lack of honor in fully restoring damaged sections to their pre-damaged condition. We called the broken trim "Mt. Trim", because it was the hardest spot to physical reach in the entire house -- and we had to go up there 10+ times to stain it.
STAINING IS A PAIN: Just for reference, proper wood staining is a MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR pain in the ass. The wood filling, the sanding, the pre-conditioning, staining, the wiping, the dropcloths, the multiple coats of everything, the (4) polyurethane coats [which often required holding a lamp in one hand, to reflect light on it to ensure evenness],and the final sanding. And don't get me started on the timing: Stain 20 minutes after pre-conditioning, but only for 2 hours; stain in 20 minute cycles consisting of 4 sub-cycles: stain area #1, stain area #2, wipe area #1, wipe area #2. Then break, get new gloves, and start over. A 20 minute cycle might equal 2 shelves, or 2 boards from ceiling to floor. Our spreadsheet had over 200 cells. At the end of the day, the only way to get stain off your skin was to apply paint thinner directly to your skin in violation of the instructions, common sense, and one's best interests...

This is my Netbook review...
What's a netbook? It's a sub-notebook sized laptop, originally designed for net surfing. They are extremely portable, and usually sell in the US$200-$400 range.
I have been in the market for a netbook for well....the last 8 months. Every time I think I have identified the one I want, a better model comes out. This is especially true of ASUS, who seems to introduce a new model every other day.
I first saw the first tiny ASUS netbook more than a year ago, I imagined how nice it would be to be sitting on the beach in Bali or Phuket, sucking down beers (can't make a martini at the beach without ice) and keeping up with my emails. In my profession, you are never really "on vacation". I typically get about 100 emails a day, and just 'answering" an email from a cellphone is often not enough. I might have to open a spreadsheet or write a formal document while sitting on that beach, so that means running back to the hotel and opening the laptop. This rules out "Blackberry" type devices, and my Nokia smartphones as well. I need a real computer with a real keyboard and Microsoft Office. Anyway, the IPOD and cellphone will be there on the beach with me anyway...
I already have a full-sized Sony laptop already so I wanted something that was so inexpensive and portable that I wouldn't mind carrying it along. Also, I figured that I spend about 20 hours a week either sitting in a plane, sitting in airports or waiting in a hotel lobby to go to the airport. I hate dragging out the big laptop and booting it up. A small netbook in standby mode would be very productive.
IDENTIFYING THE REQUIREMENT
When choosing any gadget, you need to first decide on what features you really need.
I decided to give in to the hidden desire for "cool-looking" as one of the criteria.
The danger is that you can get sucked into the "Apple Syndrome"...picking something because it looks good and seems to be popular, even if the functionality is limited. Case in point - The IPOD. Beautiful design, but poor function. Many people buy one just to "follow the crowd" and hope it will make them "popular". Some of these same people don't even have music content to load on the machine...just wanna be seen with an Apple product.
It's a big joke that people have IPOD's with 160GB drives that are 1% full.
And the software is crap...that's why I replaced the IPOD firmware with the free, open source ROCKBOX (www.rockbox.org). Goodbye ITunes s/w.
Anyway, back to Netbooks...
The other key criteria that I was looking for are:
Not bigger than the ASUS 901 series.
Windows XP pre-installed.
Should support Photoshop
At least 5 hours battery life
VGA output so I can use an external monitor (but not on the beach!)
Should be easy to upgrade, add memory, etc. without major disassembly of the computer
Today, all netbooks have the same basic features, which are built-in webcam, WiFi, Bluetooth and the Atom processor.
Additional, nice-to-have features would be :
battery life up to 9 hours (what they call "all-day computing" in the netbook world)
3G support - A place to insert a SIM card....nice, but not necessary, as I could just use a USB air card for a cellular connection. Sorry to my friends back in the US, but with the cellular provider monopoly there, you still can't get this. In Thailand, I can walk into 7-11 with $5 and buy a SIM card for my phone or 3G laptop, plug it in and have internet, free incoming phone calls, international SMS ... oh well, don't get me started on the sorry state of wireless services in my home country...!
USB ports that can function as a charger for the phones and IPODs, even with the computer turned off.
Keyboard should be resistant to martini spills (just kidding!)
After months of evaluation, here is what I have come up with.
ASUS
The company that started it all. The ASUS 901 is so cute, and now comes with 3G support so you can use it where WiFi is not available. Also, a nice battery that gives more than 5 hours of life.
I have been following the ASUS S101 model for several months now, and I thought that this would be the one to get. It is almost as thin as a Mac Air, has all metal construction and a 64GB SSD drive, which makes it one of the most expensive netbooks. But the annoying factor is that it only comes with Linux. I would have to install Windows XP myself. It is very difficult to find a legal copy of XP here in Bangkok nowadays (pirated copies are in the stores at $3 but I want a legal copy) and Vista is crap. I have heard that Windows 7 Beta works ok on this platform, but I really don't want to have to tinker for weeks to get all the drivers working on a new computer. Having a solid state drive is cool (like in a Mac Air) but it's really not that important to me.
Last weekend I gave up on the S101 and decided on the ASUS 1002HA, which is metal like the S101 but has a 160GB hard drive and XP pre-installed.
I also looked at the latest version of the ASUS 1000 series, the 1000HG. It has the super 8000mAH battery that should let it fly for more than 9 hours (!) and a place to plug in a SIM card for 3G support. Wow! It also has a "chicklet-style" keyboard like the Macs (in Thailand, the stores have mistakenly printed their brochures to say it's a "chocolate-style" keyboard!). But the 1000 is just so chunky-looking and still has that EEEPC plastic toy appearance....even though the quality has been confirmed.
TOSHIBA
Toshiba was late to the market with their netbook offering.Their NB100 looked like my 2001 Toshiba laptop shrunk down to a netbook size. Also, the battery lasts only 2 hours.
But now they are releasing this month the NB200, which may be a killer. It has all the usual netbook features, but has a 9-hour battery and a 160 GB hard disk with an accelerometer. and it looks very classy. It's USB ports can be used to charge your phone or IPOD even if the computer is turned off, which is nice.
So right now, i'm waiting for the NB200 to appear in Bangkok.
Some other models that I had evaluated...
HP
HP's original 2133 netbook looked great, but used a Celeron processor and was so hot on the bottom that you could iron your clothes with it. Most stores have them turned off in their showrooms for that reason. And to really kill it, it came with Vista pre-installed which made to perform like maple syrup. They are coming out with an Atom/ 2140 model that looks pretty good, but I can't help remembering all the problems my colleagues have had with their HP and Compac notebooks over the years. They just seemed to fall apart. However, the keyboard on the HP's is probably the best of all netbooks.
LENOVO
The Lenovo S10 and S9 are really good looking but the battery life is below average. If it weren't for that, I probably would have one for the S9.
SAMSUNG
The NC-10 is famous for its battery life, but i'm not convinced about the build quality.
MSI
One of the original netbook leaders, but 2 hour battery life !
ACER
I have heard that you have to dis-assemble the computer (and void the warranty) just to upgrade the memory from 1 Gb to 2 GB. Also, I heard that the battery life is not that impressive.
FUJITSU
Their entry looks too plastic and toy-like. Usually I respect Fujitsu because they still manufacture in Japan.
Because they are so cheap, I have decided to get two netbooks..one for the real requirement, and one to play with (and maybe the "beach" model). Some of the original netbooks with small 20 GB SSD drives and Linux are getting really cheap...less that 7000 baht (about US $200).
If they get REALLY cheap (just before they are discontinued), I may get one and install Windows 7 (free evaluation from Microsoft until June 2010) or an optimized version of XP.
There are free utilities that lets you strip many unnecessary features from XP to a final installation size of only 700 MB and 20 second boot up time! The SSD drives are solid state so their are no moving parts. This would be almost a disposable netbook. Also, the ASUS models let you plug in an SD card with becomes part of the logical C drive. For example, the computer has a 20 GB SSD (basically flash memory) which appears as the C: drive. But if you plug in a 16 GB SD card (included free with the 901 model), you C: drive now appears as 36 GB. You can get 32 or even 64 GB SD cards nowadays, but 36 GB is more than enough for a netbook.
On the "beach" model, I may even stay with Linux (to avoid the world of viruses) and use the free Linux Office alternatives for Excel and Word.
I looked at some of the websites of US retailers...looks like they are still trying to dump the unpopular models on the public (The Asus 900, which doesn't have the Atom processor, or HP models with Vista (yuk!).
Vista is so terrible in a netbook that many computers are shipped with a XP "downgrade" pre-installed !
As usual, Asia is the place to get the latest and best hi-tech gadgets.
Compositionally Challenged Week 6 is Self Portrait - not to be confused with selfie. The challenge is to take a photo to portray who we are!
I love to garden, but I don't just stick seeds in the ground. I use graph paper to mark where and when things are planted. On a spreadsheet, I keep track of the varieties planted, how much was harvested, and assorted other notes. Just the other day, I went over my notes and seed inventory, ordered some more seeds, and started the 2017 spreadsheet. I do believe this says a whole lot more about me than my enjoyment of getting my hands dirty.
