M29 - also known as NGC 6913 or The Cooling Tower. After making a spreadsheet of all 110 Messier objects, I realised that we have only imaged 29% of them, going for the most dramatic-looking objects and ignoring many of the quite pretty star clusters. So here is another Messier object to tick off the list, a quick and easy target to aim for after our more challenging target (M16) disappeared behind trees. Around M29 there is some diffuse nebulosity but it wasn't possible to resolve properly from London using this set-up.

M16 is an open cluster approximately 6,000 light years away in the Cygnus constellation. According to the Sky Catalog 2000, Messier 29 is included in the Cygnus OB1 association, and is approaching us at 28 km/s. Its age is estimated at 10 million years, as its five hottest stars are all giants of spectral class B0.
This cluster can be seen in binoculars. In telescopes, lowest powers are best. The brightest stars of Messier 29 form a "stubby dipper", as Mallas says it. The four brightest stars form a quadrilateral, and another three, a triangle north of them. It is often known as the "cooling tower" due to its resemblance to the hyperboloid-shaped structures. A few fainter stars are around them, but the cluster appears quite isolated, especially in smaller telescopes. In photographs, a large number of very faint Milky Way background stars shows up.
Messier 29 can be found quite easily as it is about 1.7 degrees south and little east of Gamma or 37 Cygni (Sadr). In the vicinity of Messier 29, there is some diffuse nebulosity which can be detected in photographs.

This is by no means perfect but I thought it made a very interesting combo. I created a spreadsheet of all the DC Villains in LEGO form that exist Flash literally has 6. Granted he has more then Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Firestorm, and Mister Miracle but cmon 6. I’m waiting for some LEGO sets with more speedsters. So whatever end of rant here’s Godspeed I know he’s not perfect but at the same time he’s kinda perfect in my eyes
Another busy day, but Tim really helped me out last night (before my laptop went haywire) by setting me up a spreadsheet to manage all the tasks I'm attempting to juggle. It was pleasing ticking off jobs, and it kept me focused on the higher priority ones instead of getting distracted by all the random stuff that pops up all the time.
Managed to get out for a walk at 5pm, then did another hour's work when I got back home. Had a quick chat to a policeman on the way back, as I'd spotted some kids climbing over the railway bridge when I first headed out - and the police (three vans' worth!) had obviously come to check up on reports of people on the tracks. Not sure I was much help, but I was able to give a bit of a description, and the time that I'd seen them.

Its been a month since I got the iPad. I've gone to meetings with it; chatted on Facebook with it; read a magazine on it; drawn spreadsheets with it; struck up conversations because of it; shown prospective clients my work on it; replied to emails; used it in Singapore; annotated PDFs; watched an episode or two of the Modern Family; anyhow, let's just say I've done quite a bit on the ipad. So here are my "brewing-for-one-month" opinions of the device. I hope this helps people who are thinking of getting one and helps me answer all my friends who ask: what's it for?
The iPad is a unique device. I know we use the word unique quite a bit these days. But I think unique is an apt descriptor for it. I say unique because the device really doesn't fit into a category of computers that we currently have. To call it a tablet, although its looks may suggest that, is inaccurate. Mainly because a tablet suggest inputting with a pen-like device (at least in my mind) and it conjures up PCs of not-so-long ago with rotating/folding screens, a keyboard and a scaled-down version of a desktop PC experience. To call it a big iPhone or iTouch undermines, what I think is, one of the most important aspects of the iPad—its bigness. Sure the interface (hardware and software) looks just like the iPhone but the largeness of the screen allow for things that the screens of the smaller iDevices don't allow. I will go back to that later.
So it's not a tablet, it's not an over grown iPhone, it's not a desktop PC, what is it? I think this is where Steve Job's "magical" word comes in. Before you start accusing me of drinking too much Apple-flavored-water, hear me out. This is the designer in me talking now.
Magical they say. Why? Well because its a device that can be anything you need it to be. You need to read a book, open the iBook app and it is a "book". You want to read a magazine, tap on the Wired icon and the device is a magazine. Want to watch a video, open a file and the whole screen is taken up by Iron Man. Nothing else. No bar up the top telling you File; Edit; Window; Help. No heat. The device stays the same temperature the whole time. No fan whirring or hard-drives spinning. You might say I'm being too picky on devices. But the truth is, its all about experience. How you experience what you are doing affects the act of doing (whatever it is you're doing).
The iPad has (some apps do it better that others) the ability to disappear leaving you only with the information (book, video, chat, slides, images) and your hands directly manipulating that information/interface. This is where that bigness factor that I mentioned earlier comes in. You can't get that feeling of manipulation that the iPad gives on a smaller screen. iPhones/Touches come a little close to that but not as immersive as the iPad. I think I feel it most when I use Safari for browsing the web. I do feel like I am moving or wading my way through information. I don't mean to exaggerate, but browsing with the iPad is really a different experience.
The genius of the device is the answer to the question what's it for: its whatever you want it to be. The device is different from other computers because, well for one, a computer is for computing (1+1 or how many pixels to display when the scene changes in Avatar). Computers and iPhones and iPods were all about the device. A device which allowed you to do something (and I suppose that made them easier to sell, I mean iPods for music/iPhones for calls). The iPad isn't about the device. Its about the information. I think that makes it harder to sell. It's also why I think reviews of the iPad which compare it to another, better-known or more familiar computer/device is flawed or incomplete. It's not like those things. It's a different analogy all together. Henry Ford said of the new automobiles: If we asked people what they wanted they would have said faster horses. Or something to that effect. Same thing with iPad. People seem to want a computer that they know. While the iPad has similarities is a different machine all together.
Okay. So those are my thoughts on the iPad. Its not a review per se, but I hope that gives some a better idea of the device.
Here are some tips for those thinking of buying:
Get the Apple case. Its a good case. Some people think it looks cheap. No it isn't. It fits snug and very well considered.
Get the 3G+Wi-Fi version. Pictured above is a wi-fi and a 3G+wi-fi version. They are identical in speed, screen and look except for a black plastic bar on the top of the 3G version. Like I said in the review, the device is about information. You need connectivity to get information. Sure wi-fi will do. But I'm Reinar.
If you intend to type a lot. I mean write a novel or an extend Flickr post (like this) get the bluetooth keyboard (99AUD). You're wrists will thank you.
If you are worrying about the lack of USB ports, an irreplaceable battery or the absence of a camera, get over it. The battery lasts 2.5 days (yes, days) and I am a heavy user. The camera. Honestly, we've had phones with multiple cameras (front and back) for years now. When was the last time you made a video call? And the USB ports. Well as I said the device isn't a desktop or laptop or any other top.
Is the iPad perfect. No. There are ways it can improve. I am looking forward to the OS4 which will allow the iDevices to do so much more. But I think this is one of the best forward steps in consumer-computing that I have seen in a long time.
Should you get the iPad? Well it depends. Do you get the iPad?

A Quick Trip to see the "Victor" and "Vulcan" together Event at North Tyneside Steam Railway - Stephenson Museum - I was lucky to get a lift to the museum while a friend had an abortive shopping trip (long queues) to a shopping outlet.
As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.
403 - "Victor" was Visiting from the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and meeting up with 401 - "Vulcan", a Home Locomotive built by the same factory for the "Victor" and "Vulcan" together Event at North Tyneside Steam Railway - Stephenson Museum.
Here, 403 - "Victor" is hauling the train I am on to the Percy Main end of the approximately 2 mile long line.

The Short Version + Actionable Conclusions
------
* The more of the model's body points included and visible in a shot, the more likely your shot will be to viewed. Caveat: The magnitude of views will depend on other factors, like the model, the setting, the clothing, poses, light, etc.
* Models: Get full-body shots and use those. You might like the headshot, but if you look at the stats for views, you're several times better off with a shot that includes as many body points as possible. (More on what those are, below.)
* Photographers: Back up and get the whole body in, if you aren't already. Headshots and closeups are great, but the full body shots, with most of the body visible, pull comparatively more views.

Why Do This?
----------
I was surprised by the stats in my modeling sets--"full body" shots seemed to get more views than they deserved, in spite of themselves. I'm partial to frame-filling closeness and really like those shots. But the "full body" shots seem to just pull more views. I was baffled by this and wanted to quantify that what I *thought* was going on, *was* going on, statistically.
End Use?
-----------
I pay attention to my photo's stats to help guide my photography and I wanted to figure out the "best" distance from a model, in general, to maximize views.
Why the Cassandra S. set?
-----------
I took the Cassandra S. set because the view counts are very high, which should mitigate some of the statistical variation that may appear in less-viewed sets. (More about this set in the Caveats at the end.)
Method
-----------
(1) I made a new Cassandra S. set (Metrics) and ordered it visually by "closest to Cassandra" to "furthest from Cassandra." I used the size of her face as a general guide and then tweaked.
(2) I transcribed all of the shot names and views into Excel.
(3) I removed the black and white shots from the data set. They were skewing results badly. (If you recall, I posted last year my observation about B&W shots getting 1/7th to 1/9th fewer views than color shots, on average.) BTW? The 1/7th to 1/9th rule for B&W shots held true in this data set, too.
(4) I cataloged "body data points" in each photo. In other words, which sections/parts of the body were mostly visible in any given shot. I used the following areas: head, chest, cleavage, arms, hands, back, stomach, hips, groin, buttocks, thighs, calves, and feet. When a part was mostly visible, it got 1 point. (In the case of hands, arms, thighs, calves, and feet only one of the two had to be visible to score the full point.)
(5) I added up the body data points for each image to get a score for each photo.
(6) I crunched the spreadsheet to sort it on views, created a chart, added an additional data line for the body data points, and then placed the trend lines.
Conclusion
---------
I was completely stunned at how the trend lines on this one lined up. Even juggling data around through re-sorts, the correlation remained.
Shooting models and want more views? Get more body data points in.
Meaning, make sure as many of the points as possible are visible--back up, photogs, and get the whole body in. On aggregate, those shots will pull more views.
Caveats
---------
* This is not a controlled study--it's an anecdotal analysis. I am not a statistician.
* Not every shot "obeys" the rules. There is some local fluctuation. However, as an aggregate, the trend lines are clear--there is a direct correlation between body control points in frame versus views.
* Cassandra S. can be considered "hot", which might lead one to believe that the results are skewed due to clothing (or lack thereof). However, I've seen very similar visitor viewing trends with the other models--male and female--that I've shot. The more body control points that appear in the frame, the more likely the photo is to be more popular. I have to crunch numbers to be absolutely certain, but based on what I've seen, the trend is very likely the same.
* While I do have some shots that are of a farther distance than the most-viewed shot, I have many more close shots than far away shots, so there could be a sweeter spot for distance.

I made my own 'Top Of The Pops' 1970's LP cover (as found at car boot sales now for 5p) to use for my music XLS spreadsheet I sell on CD. Yes, it's Kylie Minogue.
It lists all number one albums & singles, both Live Aid acts+tracks, Brit award winners, TV and radio programme music poll results, plus lists every track on every Now album.
DJ's love it as they can find that track on the 100+ Now albums quickly and find out what was number one on any day since 1950's incl sheet music number ones! I've sold 100's with many return customers (for updates) and word of mouth sales. I was the first to ever produce this and sell it in early 2004 (mainly on ebay) yet people have copied my idea and now also do it but mine is still the original, biggest and best. On the official NOW website I even got it/me mentioned (google .. bobasonic spreadsheet ). A bargain for £1 to £5 depending on it's contents (one list to all lists)! It's took me 100's of hours of work.
