A Photo from Day 5 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

The East Somerset Railway (ESR) runs trains from Cranmore station to Mendip Vale station and back on a 5 mile round trip along its Heritage Railway line.

Along the line, there is also a halt and Cranmore West Station which is near the Sheds.

There is ample car parking at the Cranmore end of the line on normal running days so I started there.

The day I went during the sort of main summer holidays, there was only 1 steam Locomotive running although another was at the sheds and could have been steamed if thought necessary.

Here, at Mendip Vale Station after running round the train, 46447 is ready to depart and power the return journey to Cranmore.

46447 is a Ivatt designed LMS "Class 2" 2MT 2-6-0 loco.

Last year, Kristina and I ran a 5k at Cannon Beach. We were both sick and possibly delirious. She missed the double-back and accidentally ran a 10k, which basically makes her a superstar.

She is joining me on my running goals, albeit from across the country. We have a little online spreadsheet where we mark up our daily mileage, and I keep updating it with more formulas and averages.. We've discovered the joys of making 8-bit character drawings with coloured cells in googledoc spreadsheets.

Basically, we're the cutest ever, and I love us! :)

In this photo below, you can see Tane, my once-bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed previous assistant. After a rather strenuous and stressful China leg to the tour and in the throes of young love, he has decided to head over to the USA to pursue his college sweetheart, Ash. His heart beats away like a jungle drum inside of his smooth dolphin chest, and soon that chest will flutter across the mixed metaphor of the Atlantic Sea to rejoin his paramour. Thusly, I have lost an assistant and New Zealand has lost a national hero.

So now, I needs me a new one. What's involved? Well, first let's talk about what you get, then talk about what you gotta do.

First, you'll travel around the world with us and everything is included from air travel to board. For example, across our tours in USA, Europe, and Asia, we stayed in over 40 different Ritz-Carltons and other partner hotels, so we're not exactly slummin' it. You get to take photos alongside the team, learn a lot about the visual arts, and see some of the most amazing things in the world. You'll have adventures that are indescribable. You'll also have the freedom to create a great many things within the organization from photos to books to film and more. You'll be on the cutting edge of tech, media, and social media. You'll also end up going down many philosophical rabbit holes if you so choose.

Now, what is required from you? Well, mostly a willingness to do everything from the most awesome to the most mundane. Remember, anything I ask you to do is something that I have been willing to do myself for the past ten years. So, if it's not below me, it's not below you. We're a small company (about eight people), so everyone does a little bit of everything.

Remember, it's my goal to be the dumbest person at the company. So I hope you're clever and enthusiastic. I find that gets you through most anything.

To name a few of these tasks, in no particular order: Organizing photos and videos, backing up data, editing video, charging camera batteries, sending videos to our editors in Brisbane and Scotland, carrying a lot of stuff, shooting video while carrying a super-heavy gimbal, meeting with our art collectors, getting me smoothies or wine depending on the time of day, writing newsletters, copy/pasting blog posts, creating eBooks from existing assets, getting supplies for the studio, driving my kids around when we need another set of wheels, keeping meticulous track of social stats in spreadsheets, getting us sandwiches on those 14-hour days, cleaning our Burning Man RV, procurement, drone piloting and prep, graphic design for social media reports for partners and other marketing needs, Lightroom basics, Photoshop basics, laughing at my jokes, writing skills that are way above average, making cocktails at our studio bar for soirees, driving us around on photo shoots throughout New Zealand and the world, hiking long distances while carrying a lot of shit, managing our online store at Store.StuckInCustoms.com , keeping up with the latest trends in social media, and generally anticipating what needs to be done before we ask for it.

You'll also need to live here in Queenstown or Arrowtown, New Zealand. While I am in studio here, you'll come in every day during normal working hours and you have your own little office with a window view of beautiful New Zealand (that is blocked by a huge bush).

It's certainly a rather stringent set of requirements, I realize... sort of like Another Trey. A clone. A clone of my own... willing to work ridiculous hours while chipping away at short-term and long-term goals.

Interested? Then send us some goodies at business@stuckincustoms.com ! We expect a large volume of applicants, so don't feel bad if you don't get a personal response from me or the team. We'll definitely look at every application, though! Thank you for your time... and if it doesn't work out with us, I hope it works out for you in one way or another! -Trey

The Valley Camp Coal Co. was incorporated in 1907. As of December 29, 1931, Elm Grove Mining Company was a wholly owned subsidiary of Valley Camp. According to a survey conducted by the City of Wheeling in the same year, Elm Grove Mining Co. employed 700 men, 300 of whom were African American, constituting nearly 43% of all mine workers at a time when the African American population of Wheeling was approximately 4%.

I was trawling through my old HD and I found my first proper comp effort! This is about...ooh, 5 years old or so and was made while I was skiving at work. I should have been filling in spreadsheets I expect.

Here's a speculative scene that blends whimsy, tension, and quiet defiance—where vision triumphs over practicality, and the owl-shaped dream takes flight:

Scene: The Planning Room at Birdland Inc. A long table. Blueprints scattered like feathers. A vintage coffee pot gurgles in the corner. Walt Mitty, sleeves rolled up, stands beside a large sketch of an owl’s face—its eyes wide, its beak pointing toward a banner labeled “Main Entrance.” Across from him sits Harold Quibble, VP of Operations, armed with a spreadsheet and a calculator the size of a lunch tray.

HAROLD QUIBBLE--Walt, I’ve run the numbers. Again. The curvature of the monorail loop alone adds 17% to construction costs. Not to mention the symmetry issues with the beak plaza. It’s charming, yes, but it’s not… efficient.

WALT MITTY--Efficient? Harold, we’re not building a warehouse. We’re building wonder. Children won’t remember how symmetrical the loading zones were. They’ll remember standing in the pupil of an owl and feeling like the world was watching over them.

HAROLD QUIBBLE--But the zoning board—

WALT MITTY (interrupting gently)--Will approve it. Because we’ll show them that this isn’t just a park. It’s a story. The owl is wisdom. Curiosity. Nighttime dreams. Every path leads to discovery. Every feather is a ride, a show, a moment of grace.

HAROLD QUIBBLE--You’re romanticizing. Again.

WALT MITTY--I’m remembering. The way my daughter looked up at the stars and asked if birds dream. I want this place to answer that question. Not with facts—but with experience.

HAROLD QUIBBLE (softening, but still skeptical)--And the investors?

WALT MITTY--They’ll come. Because they’ll see what you’re trying not to: that magic has a shape. And in Birdland, it looks like an owl’s face.

A long pause. Harold stares at the sketch. The owl’s eyes seem to blink in the lamplight.

HAROLD QUIBBLE--You know this will be a logistical nightmare.

WALT MITTY--So was flight. So was laughter. So was every good idea that ever made a child gasp.

HAROLD QUIBBLE (sighs, then smiles faintly)--Then I suppose I’ll need a new spreadsheet.

WALT MITTY--Make it feather-shaped.

Postscript: Why did Walt Disney not design Disneyland to make it look Disneyesque; like the shape of Mickey Mouse, for example? The idea that Walt might’ve dreamed of a Mickey shaped park, only to be gently deflated by a spreadsheet-wielding realist? It’s like a scene from a speculative biopic: Walt sketching a mouse-shaped layout on a napkin, while a suit across the table mutters about zoning and sewage lines and parking lots. It feels almost mythic.

This plant was buzzing with both honey bees and white tailed bumble bees on Thursday at Rowallane Gardens. Good to clock it as a good bee plant that i hadnt known about and to get to add a new entry to my Honey bees on named flowers set!

You know that feeling when you've created a spreadsheet, then spent hours entering data from a paper copy? Then, after a few hours, you think "that's not right". So you investigate, and find out that you haven't been given all the sheets? So now, you need to go through every month, checking if there is missing data?

And you lose the will to live?

That.

I needed a break from the computer. I had a cream cake for afternoon tea break, but needed to wash up first.

I've got another task now, so tomorrow will be yet more data entry. Oh, and there is no elegant way to eat a chocolate eclair!

A Photo from Day 8 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

When planning this "Rail Tour" I had hoped to go the Great Central Railway (GCR) at Loughborough but a lack of Timetables on their web site and a shortage of anything i viewed as attractive in terms numbers of Steam Locomotives in service on this day (Saturday) prompted a change of plan.

I decided to go to the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway (EBA) in the morning and I can move onto the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (KWVR) in the afternoon. It is only about 30 minutes by car between the 2 railways.

When I arrived at "ingrow West" Station on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (KWVR), there were 2 Steam Trains operating along the line. I missed the USATC 5820 "Big Jim" loco which was powering the other train and waited for the LMS Ivatt loco which was going to Keighley and then going the full length of the line to Oxenhope.

Although I would normally get off and photograph the run round etc., the bad weather made me stay put. I didn't get any photos at Keighley but like to get Video of locos going uphill as the line sets off from Keighley.

Here, the only photo I am going to share with Flickr users is of 41241 at Oxenhope Station.

41241 is an Ivatt designed and Crewe Works built for the LMS 2MT Tank loco.

Shortly after this I return to Ingrow West Station on board a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway "First Class" restored carriage which costs £2 or £3 pounds as a supplement.

During this journey i met an elderly retired Farmer who was having a very good week using a rail rover ticket.

I need to consider this option for 2022.

Normally, I tend to avoid getting photos of buses heading into Kingswood Retail Park, but come on - I couldn't resist this! Two ex-Manchester buses in one go - that'll make some easy work for the spreadsheet! And it's a nice little action shot, too! Moving on from that, two particular features I would like to mention - on 19112, you may just be able to make out where it's Manchester worker bee vinyl, added across the Stagecoach Greater Manchester bus fleet in tribute to those who tragically lost their lives in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, had once been placed on the front panel, while 19054 still carries the advertising hoardings of the event that, arguably, doomed us all into this mess, the Cheltenham Festival. Make of that what you will, of course.

A very lucky shot that required a fast change of lens, newly-cascaded Stagecoach in Hull 19112, a 2007 ADL Enviro 400 new to Stagecoach in Manchester and latterly based at Middleton depot before recently being transferred to Hull, passes alongside its recently-cascaded sister 19054, a 2006 example also new to Stagecoach in Manchester that up until recently was operating for Merseyside & South Lancashire - still retaining its yellow CCTV stickers from that operation. Both here at Kingswood Retail Park, they are working the 5 and 11 respectively for Hull Interchange.

Starting March 30th!

A Day Trip to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway for the Saturday of a 3 day Steam Gala,

As Usual, the Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

There were 2 Visiting Engines and some of 5 of the Home Fleet Locomotives scheduled to run on an intensive timetable.

Here, on my first Steam Heritage Railway Visit of 2022, a Cab Photo of 52044 has been the motive power for the journey back down the valley to Keighley Station. after dropping off Taff Vale 85 at Haworth Sheds...

52044, is a Barton Wright and Aspinall designed and Bayer-Peacock built 0-6-0, originally for the L&Y as no 957, later renumbered 12044 for the LMS and 52044 for BR.

52044 was the locomotive used as "The Green Dragon" in the 1970 film "The Railway Children".

This is the last photo I took of Tanner before I left him at the sitters place. The sitter called me this morning (01 October 2009) to let me know that he succumbed to the tumor in his sleep last night. He went peacefully and did not suffer. I am going to miss the little booger, he brought so much to my life.....

A Photo from Day 2 of a 10 day 9 night "Railway Tour" of 13 Museums and Heritage Railway Locations. The Main Aim was to get as many Steam Train Journeys to add to my Steam Powered Journeys Spreadsheet which is my modern "Trainspotting" record.

At Didcot Railway Centre, their Diamond jubilee Gala had 4 steam locomotives with 2 each on the "Main Demonstration Line" and the shorter "Branch Line." 2 diesels powered some early morning and evening trains.

Several Steam Locomotives were also on Static Display and it was possible to go round the sheds.

A few photos from a walk round the Sheds.

Here, No. 1 "Bonnie Prince Charlie", (Works No. 7544) is a Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn (RSH) built at Newcastle Works 0-4-0ST on static Display.

After a good period of FOMO over not being able to get up to York this year which has resulted in the creation of a York-based spreadsheet, I’ve realised I’ve not quite got enough of York’s buses on this Flickr page in proportion to all that I have taken, especially from my most recent visit there. So, well, exactly one year on from the last time I went to the inner city on arguably a ‘test run’ for my London trip that weekend, here we go!

These University buses have always been something quite curious to see in York. And so it seems I'm always struggling to get good photos of them. Perhaps it's down to being in the wrong place at the wrong time except for the railway station? To be quite honest, I'm not sure myself. But back to the FOMO, there is now a new window of opportunity for York for the next time I go - all First York services are being tracked live on bustimes.org! I know where I'm going straight to first when this whole mess is over - if only the rest of First West Yorkshire could be given live tracking, then it would be absolutely perfect!

Starting out a good stint of uploads from last year, taken a year to this day is First York's 'yourbus 66'-branded 37066, a 2008 Volvo B9TL Wright Eclipse Gemini with an unintentionally-befitting fleet number which was new to First Bradford, initially branded there for their Leeds-to-Bradford 72 service, however coming to York in mid-2015 and gaining its present route brand upon the awarding of the University of York bus contract to First, is seen here passing through a very busy York Railway Station working a 66 service to the University of York 'Campus East'.

Taken earlier in the year (with my S2) when i went up to Scotland for a couple of days. I have re processed this so I could try out Topaz Vivacity, primarily for sharpening as I have been looking for an alternative to Smart Sharpen in CS2. It also surpresses noise very effectively.

So altogether this has had the whole nine yards in processing:

Photomatix, Photoshop, Topaz Adjust and Topaz Vivacity.

I might just shove it into an Excel Spreadsheet to see what that does too.

Weird things happen when you have your dolls in boxes for over a year. Unless you keep a fairly detailed spreadsheet of your little possessions, you completely forget about them. Especially when you have bought, sold, and moved houses on top of usual life stuff while they were in boxes.

Isul White Rabbit du Jardin (along with Dal Loa and Taeyang Higekiri) came as surprise when I opened a large carton yesterday. I had completely forgotten I had ordered him last year. UGH!

While I'm sure I will debox the Dal and the Tae, I'm torn about this Isul. He's cute, no doubt, but I don't know if I want him in my collection. Guess I will have to let him sit around a bit longer.

I made this in a spreadsheet based on what I know about the film (actual speed of 320) and the official datasheet.

Belle Isle (Spreadsheet: Urban Wilds Item #3, 150 Barnes Ave)

yellow pollen loads very clear to see.

Salix caprea 'Kilmarnock' has big male catkins which are great for the bees at this time of year.

a wonderful bee plant that fits in any garden, easy to control spread and it comes in various pre-set sizes (as it is grafted onto a stem of another willow). Smaller formats do well in a pot.

I planted this one about 12 years ago and it has grown pretty well. But for some reason, last year, there were only a handful of the male catkins. The plant seemed otherwise well but i was worried that it might have stopped producing the profusion of catkins that I had come to expect in previous years.

I am so glad to see that it has decided to make up for the lack of catkins last year!
