An outbound Metra Rock Island District train, bound for Joliet, blasts its way through Chicago's South Loop. This line once belonged to the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, which was celebrated for its "Rocket" fleet of streamlined passenger trains.

With the Shedd Aquarium front and center, Chicago's steamy skyline and glassy shoreline glisten in golden morning light.

What’s up guys? We are not even half way trough the week and I’m already burned out. I really need some time to relax! I know it sounds crazy but even weather like this feels relaxing to me. What do you think?

Big Announcement: I have started a SmugMug photography portfolio at www.jcdy.smugmug.com!
I have spent some time re-editing some of my favorite photos - like this one - and ordering test prints to check brightness and colors. In the process I’ve started using Lightroom and learned a lot about the difference between how photos look on a backlit screen vs printed on paper, and how to use histograms to judge brightness levels so that photos will look good on different monitors and also on paper. I’m now finally ready to make the portfolio public, and very excited about it! This is a whole new stage of photography for me!
This photo is from January 2015, when I lived in Chicago. I was busy writing my dissertation that year but I did find some time to really enjoy the winter more than I ever had before (having grown up in California). The times I spent exploring the frozen-over lakeshore was some of the most fun I’ve ever had with my camera. Re-editing this made me miss Chicago! But I’m also having fun exploring Boston, and I’m hoping for some real ice- and snow-scapes next year now that I have a better sense of the Boston area. (Though there are still plenty of places I haven’t explored yet - still always looking for recommendations!)
Regarding EXIF data: sadly, it seems like Flickr has a bug in uploads today and won’t show EXIF data. So I’ll just say here that this photo was taken with a Sony Nex 5T and the 16-50mm kit lens.

the Adler Planetarium at night made whole by the other half of it's reflection...this shot was inspired by a photograph of a fellow flickr photog Dan Abueg (Undun is his tag) in this very same spot but his shot was of the skyline reflected on this same glass wall...just added about 20% color saturation on this frame and some minor in camera straightening....i plan redo this shot with my UWA lens next time to make sure i get all the letters in the frame to spell out PLANETARIUM....have a great weekend folks...pls. Although I failed to get a photo of a moose during my trip to Alaska last year, I managed to capture this moment of wildlife encounter with an amoosing mural by Jacob Watts in Chicago's South Loop.

this reflection shot of the Adler Planetarium was done using the reflective surface of one of the lighting fixtures across the Planetarium...pls. View On Black
i captured this full moon scene about 2 hours ago by the Adler Planetarium...i've noticed that they turn off the street lights along the whole stretch of Solidarity Drive everytime there is a full moon...i guess it makes for a better viewing atmosphere when the surroundings are dark and the moon shines it's light down on you....i tried to expose this as dark as possible to get a better definition of the full moon and set at ultra wide zoom to get it's reflection on the puddle....the light streak is of a Chicago Transit Bus passing thru....it looks like laser lights coming out of the Planetarium though....best to View On Black

Chicago. Middle building is the One Museum Park East, 1215 South Prairie Ave. Completed in 2008 and has 277 residences. There are more plans in the near future for more hi-rises being built in the south loop.
An elderly man leans into a brisk wind on a fall day in the South Loop of Chicago. He was oblivious to the tourist, the pigeon, and me, and seemed to be on a mission. I felt compassion for him, and for the many like him who end up struggling as they face the final years of their lives.
