Ripping up the surf at Snapper Rocks QLD

T.J's so proud of his largest fish he'd caught earlier that morning while kayak fishing off the Coastline.

Below the pier along one side there was shallow water with thick sludge/silt right below the surface. Perfect conditions for this baby snapping turtle. Looked like a rock sticking out of the water at first. The first baby snapper I'd ever seen.

Our home is in the woods and visitors of all kinds stop by on a daily basis. Turtles usually include snappers and box turtles. On this particular evening, this Eastern Painted Turtle wondered into the backyard. I grabbed my camera and walked outside. Turtle stopped at a particular point and turned around. I started taking photos. Turtle headed back into the woods as I continued snapping pics. All of the sudden, Turtle stopped in his tracks, turned his head toward me and gave me that LOOK! I loved it!

This is Snapper Point in the Munmorah National Parl. Unfortunately it is the spot where many fisherman have lost their life during rough seas.

Common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) - Walworth County, Wisconsin, USA

The lake that I mentioned a few photos prior, that had the largest population of painted turtles I have seen, also seems to have some giants lurking in it. This turtle is the largest common snapper I recall ever seeing. I was sitting around watching painted turtles climb back onto logs they had jumped from when I approached and noticed some movement underneath the waters surface. It turned out to be this enormous turtle making its way into shallow water (probably to bask in the shallows). Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any full body shots and only got portraits like this one, as the turtle didn't stick around for long when it realized I was sitting on the bank. This wasn't the only giant about, at the same lake I saw 3 other large snappers and although impressive none of them compared to this remarkable individual.

These turtles are omnivores and eat a surprising amount of vegetation, they will also scavenge if given the opportunity. Nevertheless they are formidable predators as well, feeding on pretty much anything they can swallow. Including smaller turtles, invertebrates, frogs, fish, and even waterfowl! Judging from how many painted turtles were sharing this lake with this beast, I'd be surprised if young painted turtles weren't atleast occasional snacks. And judging from the size I wouldn't be shocked to learn that a few ducklings met their fate in those jaws either.

I saw this grand snapping turtle yesterday on the side of the road...she was about 30" across and I'd guess around 25 lbs...

Doubled up with two Florida Mangrove Snappers.

yes more snapper point, but i think i have walk around the whole thing now!! woo hoo..!! now i'll have to go back to all these spots and catch them in different light... cant wait...

I took this photo at the Destin Fishing Rodeo on 10/29/2010. The fishing boat was backing up to the dock to weigh the large fish that is on top. The boat was moving so I had to get ready and shoot in a hurry. The lighting was perfect and I had an elevated postion that allowed me to get the shot. The blue container worked well with the bright red color of the fish.
