Found this large snapper along the North Branch Canal Trail along side the Susquehanna River east of Danville, PA. This canal was a major shipping and transport route in the mid to late 1800s. This snapping turtle was about 18 inches across his shell. He looked out of place in this shallow stream.

We typically don’t see too many snappers in the yard, especially one this big!

First turtle hatchling release of the season for me.

These are two snapping turtle hatchling.

Chelydra serpentina.

In Ontario, females do not begin to breed until they are 17 to 19 years old. They dig a nest in late May or June in an open area, usually one with loose, sandy soil. The nest site is often the side of a road, an embankment or a shoreline, but the females will use almost any area they can excavate. A single clutch usually consists of between 40 and 50 eggs, which hatch in the fall. Hatchlings are two to three centimetres in length. The incubation temperature of the eggs determines the gender of the hatchlings.

Thawed fish filet marinated in soy sauce, Maggi, the juice of 1/2 lime, a dash of garlic powder and a bit of sesame oil, pan fried in butter and a few drops of macadamia oil and sesame oil.

Accompanied by steamed asparagus, drizzled with a sauce of butter, pepper vinegar, ground cumin and a dash of mild curry powder.

It looks like Nigel has bagged his shot of 66528 'Madge Elliott MBE' climbing up from Crag Hall and past the Fan House.

I chose to hide below this great stone wall, the intention being trying to shield the shot from the low, bright morning sun.

Yesterday it was Mama deer and babies, this morning it was Two Mama turtles laying eggs in my yard! She looks like she is looking Right at me, but actually I believe she was concentrating on getting all that weight up off the ground and hefted farther up the hill. I believe I heard her groaning at the effort! If nothing comes and eats them, they should hatch sometime in August.

Dressed far more stylishly than I ever was, a Dapper Snapper exits the ticket office at Kinghorn Station in Scotland - only to be confronted by an unexpected paparazzi.
