Delighted to find a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly this morning. My first this year & I usually see the ex hibernators in late winter on a sunny day. When I got home another was in my garden on the flowers of the yellow berried cotoneaster
An image from about three weeks ago, of a small tortoiseshell butterfly nectaring on the chives in my garden, on one of the very few lovely sunny days we've had this year. I got lots of images with its wings open, showing its beautiful colours, but I didn't get the dof right in most of them.

One of my favourite butterflies. Quite a fair number visited my garden this year and one has decided to hibernate in my house hopefully it will stay asleep till the spring. I love the little blue heart shaped spots along the edge of the wings.
The moorland heather is in flower and attracting butterflies like this striking little Small Copper.
The rain stopped and it was amazing to see how quickly the insects responded. Here a small copper feeding on my fleabane patch.
Small waterfalls and bridge over Percy Beck ,very picturesque stream that runs in to the River Tees in Barnard Castle.
Now I don't know if it's me but I've seen very few Small Coppers this year. In fact this little beauty I photographed last weekend was only my forth sighting of the year.
Taken at AKAME 48 Waterfall in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture, Japan. This waterfall is named "Sister waterfall"

Bright copper with brown spots and brown margin. Undersides orange-brown with spots.
The Small Copper is usually seen in ones and twos, but in some years large numbers may be found at good sites. Males are territorial, often choosing a piece of bare ground or a stone on which to bask and await passing females. They behave aggressively towards any passing insects, returning to the same spot when the chase is over.
Though it remains a common and widespread species, the Small Copper declined throughout its range during the twentieth century. Widespread through Britain and Ireland, and occasionally visits gardens.
