Convento de Cristo, Tomar. This is probably my favourite of the great Portuguese monasteries I visited; despite the grid plan that you see on the maps, it's disposed on several levels, with odd connections between the different floors and cloisters, and a secondary range running at an odd angle, and there are surprises hidden everywhere - you never know quite what the buildings are going to get up to when your back's turned. This tiny cloister hardly seems to deserve the name; if you tried saying your prayers while walking round it, you wouldn't get as far as 'hallowed be thy name' let alone 'amen'.

Casino Roseninsel (Rose Island) - The small island was purchased by the Bavarian royal house halfway the 19th century. However, it was only Ludwig II (1845-1886) who made extensive use of it a little later. The seclusive 'fairy-tale king' did receive guests like Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, his beloved composer Richard Wagner and cousin Elisabeth 'Sisi' of Austria in the small Casino. Never a residence in the real sense of the word, Ludwig did spend nights here.
I know precious little about moths but a web of good sized caterpillars in a Hawthorn on my local patch caught my attention as they were clearly not the usual Lackey species. Instead they are the larvae of a related but much rarer species - the Small Eggar. Eriogaster lanestris.
