Not only does our school employ numerous full-body baby, child, male, female and geriatric manikins, but we also use specific simulators for such skills as urinary catheterization, tracheostomy care, and IV administration (pictured) -- and the list goes on and on!

At the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) College in Poole, Dorset, it is possible to experience a simulated sea rescue mission. In this one, we left Dover Harbour to rush, along with other boats, towards a burning freighter. The purpose was to locate sailors in the sea near the prow of the ship without crashing with other boats or missing people bobbing in the water. Although it appears static, the imagery is anything but, with waves crashing, the boat pitching and the other vessels moving, so the helm has adjust course and speed while crew are on lookout. On return to the harbour a quartering sea is experienced with violent pitching and rolling. Just five minutes was enough!

However it can be dangerous for novice anaesthetists to practice their first epidural procedure on real patients. This simulator provides a training scenario whereby novice anaesthetists can practice needle insertions and visualise bony structures.
