In 1997 my friend Gerald showed me a copy of a book from 1896 called 507 Mechanical Movements by Henry T. Brown. As an engineering student taking art classes, I was captivated by all of the illustrations. I'm sure today there are more than 507 movements but it's still a great book (albeit like a periodic table missing the transuranium elements). I was thinking about that book when I was making this pulley on the mixte I'm trying to finish up this week. I love pulleys on bikes. There is no great power advantage from this one but it's a great way to shift the cable pull without using housing. It's a lot of work though! On this one I made the pulley to be close to the seat binder so the cable won't pop off when the brake's quick release is disengaged. You can see that in the little video. You can also see the brazed in seatpost stop and internal routing for the rear brake. #mixte #pulley #chapmancycles
