Having crossed Farrington Junction and approaching Leyland station, Colas 56096 is seen at the head of the 6Z30 Carlisle Yard to Warrington Arpley wagon transfer this afternoon. In transit are 3 PCA 'Silver Bullet' wagons.

My thanks go to Tim Moran for the heads up on this one.

GB Railfreight Class 92, 92033 leads classmate 92018 along with 66722 "Sir Edward Watkin" (both DIT) through an icy Hartford on 6O74 17:55 Irvine Caledonian Paper to Dollands Moor.

These were the empty china clay slurry tanks from the loaded train that ran a day late on Thursday 17th December and presented an opportunity to move the two 92s south to Wembley.

The positioning move to reduce the number of 92s in Scotland with the sleeper back down to one train in each direction per night, and also to facilitate 018’s onward transfer to Crewe ETD the following day for attention.

The 92s had earlier ran from Polmadie to Carlisle on 0M05.

66722 worked the train from the paper mill in Irvine to Carlisle and would also take the tanks onwards to Dollands Moor after the 92s came off at Wembley.

This was the first time since the night of 23rd August 2018 that a 92 had worked the china clays on the WCML (038 working 6M74 from Carlisle to Wembley on that occasion). Once a regular haunt of the Dysons, the flow is now the preserve of 66s, with the loaded train going via the (unwired) Settle & Carlisle route.

Thanks to Skire for this shot. I vividly remember that day, Snatch popped down to see who these 2 upstarts were, and later told us he'd done the beats for SilverBullet - 20 Seconds To Comply. Rise did a nice piece that day. Last time i saw him was at 'Joe Friday's' club Westcliff circa 1994. Need him and Daz out urgently.......

There is nowhere on the S&C you can photograph this train with the sun on the front (unless it runs very late), but this is probably the closest. Having got into position, I realised that if I used the pole I could reduce the amount of grass in the immediate foreground and also include the full height of the dry stone railway boundary wall. I nearly went back to the car to get it, but decided that it would give me an excuse to come back!

The 6S55 WO 09:14 Burngullow ECC to Irvine, Caladonian Paper service was recorded passing Abergavenny in the care of a brace of Cardiff Canton's Civil Link liveried [Dutch] Class 37/0s, 37207 & 37035. The train comprised purpose-built TIA 'silver bullet' bogie tanks provided for this china clay service, that was the longest distance trainload freight operation on BR at 550 miles each way.

An immaculate 66785 is seen leading its train of "bullet tank" wagons off of the Irvine Paper Mill branch as it begins the overnight journey to Wembley. This is the first leg of a long journey back to Antwerp (Belgium) where the wagons will be reloaded with Kaolin slurry.

The 66 will cover the Irvine to Wembley and Wembley to Dollands Moor legs before handing over to Class 92's for the trip through the Channel Tunnel. The Class 92s will be relived by European locomotives in Frethun.

Class 92s used to work the train between Carlisle and Dollands Moor with the 66 tucked inside for the unwired GSW leg, but this practice has been abandoned and a 66 now works all 400 (electrified) miles between Carlisle and Dollands Moor - a bit ridiculous if you ask me...

66785 is one of the 10 ex-DB Cargo locomotives acquired by GBRf a year or so ago. It was renumbered from 66132 on 18/05/2018 and has since been painted into the GBRf corporate colours and had modifications that bring up to a similar spec to the rest of GBRf's fleet.

1072, named City of Lithgow is a BB18 1/4 class 4-6-2 built by Walkers Limited in Maryborough which entered service in 1956. The loco was withdrawn from service in March 1970 and sold to Zig Zag Railway in 1975.

Railcar 2016 is one of 42 built for Queensland Railways by Commonwealth Engineering between 1956 and 1971.

Most were withdrawn in the early 1990's with the last withdrawn in January 2000.

24 of this class survive with Zig Zag Railway owning 7.

I still miss Alaska really badly, and I'm struggling to believe that we're less than six months from it being a decade ago!

I guess a few things have changed at Ted Stevens Int'l Airport, Anchorage, since then, and I imagine the 744F is now a slightly less frequent visitor than it was back then?

GB Railfreight's Class 66, 66720 in its special "Night and Day" livery hauls the loaded china clay tanks (6S94) through Moore on their way to Irvine Caledonian Paper in Scotland.

66720's livery was unveiled in a special ceremony at the Nene Valley Railway on 3 July 2011 and was designed by a GBRf staff member's then six year-old daughter, Emily, who won a competition to design a locomotive at a previous GBRf family day.

GB Railfreight Class 66, 66707 "Sir Sam Fay" leads the china clay slurry tanks north past Moore Lane with the loaded 6S94 working to the Irvine Caledonian Paper mill.

The flow usually operates on a Wednesday, however with SNCF strikes disrupting traffic through France, this train was running unusually on a Thursday.

The china clay empties usually run from Irvine Caledonian Paper to Wembley Yard overnight on a Thursday so not a working that's often captured. However, due to disruption to the flow caused by SNCF strikes, the tanks were being returned on a Sunday afternoon / evening path.

The Caledonian Paper Mill at Meadowhead south east of Irvine was built in 1988 and opened in 1989. It was rail connected from the outset with a 1 mile long branch off the Kilmarnock to Barassie line. Rail facilities were provided on site for inbound timber and china clay slurry traffic and outbound finish paper products loaded from a covered warehouse. To serve railway operations on site Caledonian Paper Plc bought a brand new 0-6-0DH from the Hunslet Engine Co. Leeds. (HE 9092/1988). The locomotive is seen here in the China Clay discharge terminal and seeing as it had to deal with lengthy air braked trains it was provided with a substantial compressor mounted on one end, it also turned out to be a historic locomotive as it was the last standard gauge diesel shunter built at the companies Leeds factory. The mill was served from the outset by the legendary "Silver Bullets" the longest single freight flow in the UK at the time bringing China Clay slurry from Burngullow in Cornwall twice a week. It was conveyed in the iconic stainless steel tanks built for this traffic in 1989 by Société ANF-Industrie at Blanc-Misseron in France. The 26 wagons in the fleet were owned by Tiger Rail Leasing and leased exclusively to ECC (English China Clays Ltd).

Whenever I see one of these little Airstreams on the road, it always gets my attention. I'm as enamored as anyone, I guess, of something that seems to represent an easier time and yet still has the promise of future adventures. I always wish that I were pulling that Silver Bullet, heading for, I don't know, anywhere but where I am. And that that means I could also be anyone else too. After passing the driver hauling this particular RV, though, I had the feeling that this wasn't a vacation for them, rather that it might be home and that they didn't necessarily know where they would land. Both car and its haul had seen better days; driver too by the looks of him. There was something so sad and serious about all the car's occupants that as we pulled ahead, I had to say a little prayer that if things were as I imagined, with time and travel they would eventually arrive at a better life.

Recorded passing South Brent on a dull July Sunday in 1989, Railfreight Class 37/5 pairing 37675 'William Cookworthy' & 37674 had charge of the 6S55 11:48 Burngullow ECC to Irvine clay slurry tanks. These purpose-built TIA stainless steel bogie tanks [silver bullets] were introduced in 1989 to work the twice weekly movement of china clay slurry to the Caledonian Paper plc factory in Scotland, each return service being worked throughout by a pair of Class 37s.
