Silent geometries for a deafening everyday life
The silence of a photograph does not show the deafening noise of the whirlpools within us.

This is a stretch of road out in Strasburg that calls my name when the storms inside rage. Honestly if I could find a house to plop out in the middle of that vast prairie I would. Sitting there I can close my eyes and hear the somber whispers of the wind. It is somber but there is no reproach. Instead the wind flows soothingly over and around me til the storms began to quiet down much like a fussing infant that finally drifts to sleep. The clouds come and go and although time passes it's as if it has stood quietly next to me watching itself in another life. I've never followed this road to the end, surprisingly I have no idea where it goes! But I'm ok with that for now, as the old quote goes in my own words of course, it's not the destination that matters only the steps we take to get there.

Silent Isolation - An atmospheric misty morning reveals the ruins of Kilchurn Castle reflected on Loch Awe on a deafeningly silent and still dawn, hauntingly beautiful in ethereal isolation by the mist rolling up the loch.
Dalmally, Argyll and Bute, Scotland
Suomussalmi Finland by Reijo Kela.
The crowd of almost thousand figures that make up the Silent People suddenly emerges before the passing motorist like some great stroke of magic. In the morning with light behind them, this motionless army appears morose, even menacing. However, as the day progresses their countenance brightens up and with the setting of the sun they present a distincly jolly and colourful picture. When the wind blows their straw hair and clothes begin to flap rhythmically, it is as if they had suddenly sprung into life.
The peat-heads have their clothing attended to twice a year; their heads come straight from the field, their clothes from organised collections. The Silent People are made and clothed by the Suomussalmi Youth Workshop, which also takes care of their maintenance.
And now for something a little different from my normal posts...
One of our neighbors has this 4 ft. Moai (statue) in their backyard and I'd never noticed it until the other day.
I don't know if they have visited Rapa Nui (Easter Island) or not, or if they're simply fascinated by these iconic figures and wanted to decorate their landscape with a replica. Either way, I found it engaging and so I've posted it here today.
There are close to 1,000 of these stone figures on the island off of Chile's coast, and some of them are 30 feet in height! The latest determination by scientists is that they were carved by the Polynesian Rapa Nui people around 1250 to 1500 CE, so approximately 600 to 900 years ago.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is an amazing archeological and historical place. Currently 5,000 Rapa Nui peoples live on the island, and it is a favorite tourist destination to see and experience in person.
Long abandoned and badly decayed farmhouse in east central Iowa, one of three within sight of each other. They say good things come in threes?
This was a beautiful house in the day. Servant's stairs with a quarters separated from rest of the house.Larger chandelier lights and extensive crown and window mouldings.High ceilings and a large kitchen. Now empty and collapsing-I just couldn't convince myself to climb over 2 missing steps to get to the upstairs. If I missed, that would be pretty hard to explain those injuries...LOL
At the chapel, all was deadly silent. It was the quietest day Stellar had known, she would remember it for its emptiness

The Silent People is an art installation produced by Reijo Kela. The first time for this installation was in 1988 in Suomussalmi. The installation provokes the travellers and motorists to stop and wonder about these ''people''. In this 1994 launched art installation the figures standing in the middle of the field causes curiosity and disorientation. Read more about the mystery of Suomussalmi.
The Silent People by Reijo Kela
The artist hasn't given any concrete answer about his art work and the purpose of the installation is to make travellers face these mysterious figures in the field. The installation has been once moved to the steps of Helsinki Cathdedral to promote the region of Kainuu. Few days after being in the steps, the Silent People moved quietly back to their original place in Suomussalmi. Now the amount the figures in the field is roughly around 1000. This installation has generated international attention and it has been rewarded in Kent to receive the Medway-price in visual art-series.
Suomussalmi art installation
By the fall, the characters look creepy as the rising mist blurs the boundaries of the characters. In the middle of the mist, the characters may look like ghosts or ghosts in the middle of the field with peat bogs and wind-torn clothes.
When winter comes, characters get snow cover and look almost like people. The gloomy weather of the midwinter produce an unbelievable mood for the field and Reijo Kela's work. The purpose of the work is revealed when the characters are removed of their clothing. Only a large number of branches and sticks remain - the remaining landscape resembles the cemetery.
.
Local workshop Hanslankarit puts the clothes for The Silent People every season, so you should visit the installation to see different styles in each season. Characters' clothes are changed twice a year, early spring and fall. They always have new clothes for the figures in the field.
The installation is located in Suomussalmi highway 5 near the local fields. Keep your eyes open!

I just have that thing with trees....can't help myself. If you know me you know what I mean...it has been pretty consistent over the last 3 years.
This little beauty I discovered a few months ago, I have been out there a number of times to study the tides, light and winds to better understand the subject and convey what I imagined. I have enjoyed with great passion the silence and tranquility of the place giving me so much inspiration to free my vision and follow my signature.
It looks like some folks are VERY keen to know where my trees are...I am not gonna tell ya. Find your own and enjoy every moment and tell your very own story. What you give back to the community is your art work with your own signature not a location.
This is what photography is about for me....it's a great satisfaction to discover a place in the first instance. It's therapy, relaxation and the art of communicating passion.
The creation of such work for me is a solitary act, I can not relax if a place is invaded and people follow me every step or if I am being distracted.
Why do I tell you all this....

Most creatures I meet at night are well tempered, but there are a few exceptions. This gargoyle obviously wasn't in his best mood and I decided to let him silently screem at the universe without further enquiry.

I have to start today's blurb off with some exciting news; one of Scott's photos won Top Shot for the National Geographic Your Shot, if you'd like to check one of the prettiest photos you'll see in a long time, just click here. Seriously; it's gorgeous. Check it out!
Otherwise a fairly uneventful day; I was supposed to head out this evening with Gord but that didn't work out so I decided to get a head start on the housework for the weekend instead. I know it's supposed to rain all weekend, but maybe Mother Nature will change her mind and bring some sunshine... maybe!
Hope everyone has had a good day.

Standing next to a billabong in the West Macdonnell Rangers in Central Australia, out from Alice Springs, there is an eerie silence. Too late for the strong winds to drift through the opening but too early for the native wildlife to come down for a drink.
