We met up with the Silent People in Suomussalmi this summer. The black and white tone for remembering that today 30.11-2021 it was 82 years since the winter war started and there where though fights with the Sovjet red army in this area

How do I begin to convey
the things you've shared with me.
This statue made of rectangles struck me as I walked around London. Called 'Resolution' by Antony Gormley on the Corner of St. Bride Street and Shoe Lane, it was installed in 2007. I tried to find interesting angles and settled on this composition. I needed someone to walk into the frame and it took ages - it was a Saturday with no workers around and the whole place was deserted. In my mind the emptiness of the scene with just the one figure walking past in the background resonated with the permanent and enduring nature of the statue, standing like a sentinel, more kin to the modern glass building than to any life that passes by. Unfortunately the front view was somewhat spoiled by someone with a sense of humour sticking a cigarette in his cuboid mouth and he was also wearing a condom. I'm afraid I didn't fancy removing it as I wasn't sure if he'd got lucky... Canon EOS 6D & EF 28-80mm f/2.8-4.0L

African Milky Eagle Owl (Bubo lacteus) flying during the Feathered Friends In Flight show in Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida on Monday, February 9, 2026.
While attending the renamed Feathered Friends In Flight bird show, I was lucky enough to be sitting in the row where this owl flew right over my head. I even felt the breeze through my hair as it passed very close overhead. I had my Nikon Z9 set at 20fps and captured a handful of in focus photos. Very impressive since I was using a slower zoom lens.

Silent Isolation - An atmospheric misty morning reveals the ruins of Kilchurn Castle reflected on Loch Awe on a deafeningly silent and still dawn, hauntingly beautiful in ethereal isolation by the mist rolling up the loch.

The crowd of almost thousand figures that make up the Silent People suddenly emerges before the passing motorist like some great stroke of magic. In the morning with light behind them, this motionless army appears morose, even menacing. However, as the day progresses their countenance brightens up and with the setting of the sun they present a distincly jolly and colourful picture. When the wind blows their straw hair and clothes begin to flap rhythmically, it is as if they had suddenly sprung into life.
The peat-heads have their clothing attended to twice a year; their heads come straight from the field, their clothes from organised collections. The Silent People are made and clothed by the Suomussalmi Youth Workshop, which also takes care of their maintenance.
And now for something a little different from my normal posts...
One of our neighbors has this 4 ft. Moai (statue) in their backyard and I'd never noticed it until the other day.
I don't know if they have visited Rapa Nui (Easter Island) or not, or if they're simply fascinated by these iconic figures and wanted to decorate their landscape with a replica. Either way, I found it engaging and so I've posted it here today.
There are close to 1,000 of these stone figures on the island off of Chile's coast, and some of them are 30 feet in height! The latest determination by scientists is that they were carved by the Polynesian Rapa Nui people around 1250 to 1500 CE, so approximately 600 to 900 years ago.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is an amazing archeological and historical place. Currently 5,000 Rapa Nui peoples live on the island, and it is a favorite tourist destination to see and experience in person.

This was a beautiful house in the day. Servant's stairs with a quarters separated from rest of the house.Larger chandelier lights and extensive crown and window mouldings.High ceilings and a large kitchen.Now empty and collapsing-I just couldn't convince myself to climb over 2 missing steps to get to the upstairs.If I missed,that would be pretty hard to explain those injuries...LOL

The emptiness of space does not transmit the sounds of solar flares, sunspots, a black hole swallowing anything that comes near, the births and deaths of stars and meteors slamming into planets and moons. This maelstrom, visible occasionally, is our galaxy, the Milky Way, composed of one hundred billion stars forming about four arms spiraling outward. When viewed from another galaxy, the arms are all in the same plane, a thin disk with the diameter of one hundred thousand light years. A super massive black hole is at the rotational center of the Milky Way.

This photo is a composite of 19 star shots (6 sec, f2.8, ISO 6400) and one shot of the landscape (20 sec, f2.8, ISO 6400). StarryLandscapeStacker rotated the 19 star images to a single, precisely focused image. The image of the stars and image of the landscape were combined into a single image in Photoshop.
Photo taken in the greenbelt adjacent to Boulder, whose lights helped by illuminating the foreground, but making it trickier to get a decent shot of the Milky Way--that is the light in the sky to the left. In addition, forest fire smoke may have contributed to this photo as well.
