European Buzzard [Buteo buteo]
This youngster has been flying around my hill with his mum, for the past few weeks. They call to each other as, I assume, she is showing him how to hunt.
Here, he was sitting on a telegraph post, continually calling for his mum, who was very conspicuous in her absence. Maybe she had gone hunting by herself - or maybe she thought the time had come to loosen the apron strings and let junior get on with it by himself. Such a sad, sad sight. He was was still there, hours later, as I was returning home.
Poor wee soul!

The colors of Hummingbirds and newly budding flowers are a sure sign that spring has sprung!
Pictured is a male Anna Hummingbird. The Anna Hummingbird was originally only found on the Pacific slope from Baja California to San Fransisco, but has since expanded it range to Vancouver, British Columbia, east to southern Arizona. The Anna has adapted so well to British Columbia that it stays all seasons. The Rufous Hummingbird visits during the spring for breeding and migrates back south in the late summer.
Photo of Hummingbird taken in Cobble Hill on south east Vancouver island, B.C., Canada. Taken on March 13/19 at 1:32pm
Taken in raw format at 1/1250's at f/8.0, at 400mm, iso 800, manual white balance. No cropping.
Note;
This image is a composite, as I added the Flowering Quince as it is just budding now and adds a little extra interest to the image.

As our ship headed northeast from South Georgia, we were treated to one of our last sightings of icebergs and remnants from the world's once largest iceberg, A23a.

Happy Sunday morning all,
Every now and then one gets a rare and unexpected sighting on safari. This particular morning was one such occasion.
This is an image of a honey badger, a nocturnal animal which is very rarely seen during daylight hours. It was a first for me and a first for our guide as well. We came across a den and had the pleasure of actually seeing two of them. The one featured here was the active one, running back and forth in a repetitive pattern between a point in the distance and the den.
Getting this image required figuring out the behavioural pattern and getting as low down in the vehicle as possible. Doing these things allowed one to be able to enter the world of this fascinating and rarely seen animal.

Spotted this little visitor on my deck one afternoon in April, 2018. Looks as though he wasn’t pleased with having a camera pointed in his face ;-)

Allen’s Hummingbird:
In early spring, a narrow strip of scrub and chaparral along the Pacific Coast starts buzzing with the sights and sounds of the coppery and green Allen's Hummingbird.
Males flash their brilliant reddish orange throat and put on an elaborate show for the females, swinging in pendulous arcs before climbing high into the sky and diving back down with a sharp squeal made by their tails.
These early migrants mostly spend the winter in Mexico, but some stay in southern California year-round.
Allen's Hummingbirds breed in a narrow strip of habitat along coastal Oregon and California.
Male and female Allen's Hummingbirds use different habitats during the breeding season. The male sets up a territory overseeing open areas of coastal scrub or chaparral, where he perches conspicuously on exposed branches. The female visits these areas, but after mating she heads into thickets or forests to build a nest and raise the young.
The Allen's Hummingbird is a remarkably early migrant compared with most North American birds. Northbound birds may depart their wintering grounds as early as December, arriving on their breeding grounds as early as January when winter rains produce an abundance of flowers.
Like other birds, Allen's Hummingbirds use their feet to help control their body temperature. When it's cold outside they tuck their feet up against their bellies while flying, but when temperatures soar, they let their feet dangle to cool down.
The oldest recorded Allen's Hummingbird was at least 5 years old when she was captured and re-released in California during banding operations in 2009. She was banded in the same state in 2004.

This week we spent some time doing bird surveys for the BirdLife Australia "Aussie Bird Count" . This involved recording bird sightings and numbers of birds in 20 minute blocks, logged against locations.
We were surprised to see a pair of magpie geese a bit further south than the zone specified in my bird book. I think they are planning to nest. I hope so, we will go back for another look in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for looking!
There had been a kill during the night and we were not sure if it had been a lion kill or if the hyenas had taken something down . There at least thirty hyenas in the area and some were resting after a full meal while others were still eating and then there were some off guarding a bone that they had been able to grab. Truly an amazing sight to see ant to hear the hyenas in real life is over the top !!
Wishing all a very pleasant and blessed day !!
Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)
While doing dishes I glanced out the window and saw several Wild Turkey flying down a slope towards my property. Upon landing they starting running towards the dry creek. I was confused by this behavior until I saw a large brown blur out of the corner of my eye. The blur was a Golden Eagle, and it exploded onto one of the Toms and the two tumbled out of view at the base of a tree. I grabbed my camera and carefully worked my way to the field. I got there in time to see the poor Tom thrashing around (you can see its foot in the bottom right of the image) while the Eagle was standing on it throttling the Turkey with its talons. I backed off to not stress the Eagle. The Eagle remained to eat for about an hour, that night the Coyotes paid a visit, and the next day the Turkey Vultures finished the clean up.

I wonder how old these great crested grebes chicken are. One was riding on its mother's back, the second one was swimming by their side. Such a lovely sight!
